Yogasanas: Benefits of Alignment
In yoga, alignment refers to the precise positioning of the body in various postures (asanas) to achieve maximum benefits and prevent injury.
🦚Physical Benefits: Proper alignment ensures that the muscles, bones, and joints are in the optimal position, reducing strain and risk of injury while improving flexibility, strength, and balance.
🦚Energy Flow: Aligning the body correctly facilitates the smooth flow of energy (prana) through the body’s energy channels (nadis), promoting vitality and overall well-being.
🦚Mental Clarity: By focusing on alignment, practitioners cultivate mindfulness and concentration, calming the mind and promoting mental clarity and awareness.
🦚Spiritual Connection: Aligning the body in yoga postures helps individuals connect with their inner selves, promoting a sense of unity between mind, body, and spirit, and facilitating deeper spiritual experiences.
🦚Overall, alignment in yogasanas enhances the holistic benefits of yoga practice, promoting physical health, mental well-being, and spiritual growth.
Creating ease to explore other dimensions
This is what yoga is about – you want to bring your body to such a state of ease that you do not even know whether your body exists or not. You cannot forget the parts of your body that hurt right now. You can only forget what is at ease. To bring the body to such ease, you must breathe slightly deeper than normal, and over time, in any asana, if you are in the perfect posture, your breath should become normal. If your body is in good shape and you are within a certain age range, after about 12 to 18 months of intense practice, you will come to a point where in a full asana posture, there will be no need to breathe deeper than normal anymore. Just the normal breath will be more than enough, without gasping. If you remain in the full posture for one minute and there is no aberration in your breath or your pulse rate, it means your body is coming to ease. If it comes to such a state of ease, there will be no dis-ease. And if there is no state of dis-ease in you whatsoever, then the body has energy to explore other dimensions of life. Otherwise, the body keeps you busy for the rest of your life.

📷: Sri Naina Devi Ji & Anandpur Sahib
The Temple of Shri Naina Devi Ji is situated on a hilltop overlooking the Gobind Sagar lake. The lake was created by the Bhakra-Nangal Dam.
According to legends and also written in Veds and Purans , Goddess Sati burnt herself alive in Yagna, which distressed Lord Shiva. He picked the body of Sati on his shoulder and started Tandav. This horrified all deities in the heaven as this could lead to holocaust. This urged Lord Vishnu to unleash his Chakra that cut the Sati’s body into 51 pieces. Shri Naina Devi Temple is the place where eyes of Goddess Sati fell down.
Many Cultures Were Aware of the Bindu
A little-known aspect of yogic physiology, which is totally absent in modern medical sciences, is something which I constantly keep “on” within myself, called the bindu. “Bindu” means a tiny point. It is a particular spot on the pineal gland surrounded by a certain secretion. If you touch the bindu, it will release secretions that make your body comfortable and make you feel ecstatic. To activate the bindu, there is a certain point at the back of your head. So many cultures around the world have recognized this, and there is an understanding that that point needs to be protected and activated.
In the Hindu way of life, when young Brahmin boys are initiated into spiritual sadhana, they shave off the hair on the rest of the head and leave a tuft at this point. In many other parts of the world, if people are doing a certain type of activity which they believe is spiritual, they want that spot to be covered, so they started using small caps or some kind of a cloth. Everywhere in the world, at some point some people would have been aware and probably spoke about it. I really do not know what they have said, but I have noticed people doing these things. If there is someone who comes from the Jewish culture for example, have they told you something specific about why you should wear this cap?
Meditator 1: When you do a spiritual practice, you go to the synagogue, and you wear the cap to show that you are just a human being and you are not the divine. So, it is a sign of respect and a separation between you and the God that you are worshiping.
Sadhguru: Somebody else have something to say?
Meditator 2: It’s more of a connection, to remind you that there is a divinity. You’re always wearing it so you don’t forget. It’s not necessarily a separation, it’s more a reminder of the divinity within you or around you.
Sadhguru: I do not know when the neurosurgeons will come upon the bindu. Even if they come upon it, because it is so small, they may ignore it. But if you pay attention to your system, it is there all the time. But do not start imagining these things!
How the Pineal Gland Controls One’s Mood
As scientists explore the nature of the human mind, and as we find better instruments to look at the nature of the human brain, one thing is becoming very clear for modern psychologists and neuroscientists: there is much more to be known about the human mind than they know right now.
As there is medical physiology, there is a whole yogic physiology. One aspect of yogic physiology that aligns in some way with modern neurosciences has to do with the pineal gland. This gland was always recognized as being associated with the agna chakra. Today, neuroscientists say that the secretions of the pineal gland control and moderate one’s moods and experiences. If you have a very stable and sufficient pineal secretion, having a pleasant mood within yourself is not a problem.
Both medical sciences and street-side drugs have made it clear that chemicals can create pleasant and unpleasant experiences within you that are very real for you. Others may dismiss it as you causing it to yourself, but actually, you are causing everything to yourself. The only difference is whether you cause it with or without outside help. If you simply become ecstatic right now, you are causing it to yourself without outside help. If you cause the same thing with outside stimulation, it may be the same thing experience-wise, but the end result could damage the system. And such an experience will not result in any kind of consciousness. Unconscious experiences, however big they are, are of no significance for one’s evolution, growth, and transformation.
Silence: Taking a moment to observe oneself
‘Silence is of four kinds: silence of speech, silence of the eye, silence of the ear, and silence of the mind. Only the last is pure silence and is the most important‘
Sri Ramanna Maharishi
How to become silent?
So the process of what you call as spiritual is not a psychological process. Your memory has nothing to do with it. It’s a life process. It’s an existential process. This can only happen if you allow yourself to be – just a piece of life that you are.
To do this we do many things here, and you know, you might have seen people in the ashram walking around with those orange tags. You’ve seen the silence tags people are wearing. Just shut up. Because shutting your mouth is only half the job. To become silent – is possible only when you do not think much of yourself. If you think something about yourself, if you think I’m smart, how can you shut up. You tell me – if you think I’m smart how can you shut up.
If you realise that you’re actually stupid, you don’t know anything in this existence, then, isn’t it? Then you can simply look at life with great sense of wonder, without a thought appearing in your mind. If you think you are smart about everything, you got explanations and calculations and nonsense going on in your head. If you see one thing a thousand thoughts will go off, isn’t it? You’re not sitting here in the ‘sathsang’ totally silent. You’re agreeing with me, disagreeing with me, making comments within yourself, making comments about the clothes that somebody is wearing next to you, appreciating it, depreciating it – everything is happening – Am I wrong?
Because the moment you think there is some value to what you think, then you can’t stop it. No way to stop it. It’ll just go on and on and on. When you see there is absolutely no life value to your thought process. It is just memory recycling itself. It’s just the same old nonsense recycling itself. But if you’re excited, if you’re enamoured by this recycle, if you think it’s great, you cannot stop it. If you see the patterns of what it is, if you see the stupidity of what it is, then slowly you will distance yourself and it will collapse. Because without attention it cannot go on.
The Geometry of the Cosmos & What Yoga Is in that context
Sadhguru: In the very nature of things, life can never get perfect – there is always room for improvement. But the geometrical alignment behind creation is in a certain state of perfection. Only because of this perfect geometrical alignment, life flourishes the way it does. If you look at human life, how fragile it is, and at the same time, how sturdy – how much a human being can do. This is because the geometrical design behind the creative process is so perfect.
There is a whole science today that examines the geometry behind the atomic and molecular structure of every form, from an insect to an elephant, a tree to a river and an ocean, to planetary systems and the whole cosmos. In their fundamental essence, the geometry of all these forms, from the atomic to the cosmic, is absolutely the same, and it is such a perfect design that life is so gentle, so fragile, but at the same time so firm and so beautiful.
The pursuit of manifesting this fundamental perfection of geometry in one’s life led to a phenomenally complex and sophisticated system of yoga. The yogic system is all about how to get your whole system – the physical body, the mental structure, the emotional framework, the karmic structure, and the fundamental energy basis – into a perfect geometrical symmetry, so that you can achieve a union with the cosmic nature.-
How aligned you are, how you sit, stand, and breathe, determines how your body functions, and for how long it will function.
Taking charge of your life
The body is a constant manifestation of various levels of compulsiveness, depending upon the type of information that has gone into the system. The information that is imprinted upon your physiological system is what we refer to as the karmic body. This information determines how much compulsiveness you suffer from, and how much freedom you naturally enjoy within yourself.
In hatha yoga, we are not concerned about who our fathers and forefathers were, what kind of genetics and karmic substance we received from them, and what we have imbibed in the process of living. It does not matter what has happened until this moment – we have decided to take charge of our life.
In the Indian tradition, if you are a serious practitioner of yoga, no astrologer will want to make a prediction for you, because even he understands that you have taken charge of your life. This is what a yogasana means – you are taking charge of your life. You are transforming your body and mind into a possibility in your life. It is becoming a passage, not a block.
The process of transforming the body, changing the texture of the body, changing the fundamental information in the body, which makes it go in certain compulsive patterns, needs a certain determination, forcefulness, and adamancy. You are not willing to give in to the cycles of compulsiveness. You go the way you want to go. -
The word yoga means union. That means you consciously obliterate the boundaries of individuality and reverberate with the rest of the cosmos. -
Creating the right atmosphere
Ha and tha descri- be sun and moon. Hatha is about bringing a balance between the two.
If these two dimensions are balanced within you, naturally, the body becomes a conducive place to live in for your being. If you mess up the place around you, you can move elsewhere. But if you mess up the body from within, you cannot go elsewhere until you die. As long as you live in this life, the body is the abode of your existence.
You must decide what purpose your body should serve. We will do the appropriate yoga for that.
It is important that an atmosphere is conducive rather than being compulsive. If your home is a very compulsive place, you will feel suffocated. Every situation, every atmosphere is set up for a certain purpose. Your home may be set up for one kind of purpose. The ashram may be set up for another kind of purpose. An industry or a business may be set up for a different kind of purpose. Every atmosphere should serve the purpose that we have set it up for.
You must decide what purpose your body should serve. We will do the appropriate yoga for that. If your idea of a good life is being one step ahead of others, we will do one type of yoga. If you do not compare yourself to others, but you want to find your ultimate potential in terms of activity, we will do another kind of yoga. If all you want to do is dissolve into the ultimate nature of existence, we will do yet another kind of yoga. We can practice yoga in different ways.
Asanas and emotions
You may have noticed that for different mental and emotional situations that you go through, your body naturally tends to take a certain posture. If you are happy, you sit one way. When you are unhappy you sit another way. When you are peaceful you sit one way, if you are angry you sit another way. Many times, you can tell what is happening with someone by just observing the way they are sitting, have you noticed? Based on this, conversely is the science of asanas – by consciously getting your body into a certain posture, you can also elevate your consciousness. You can change the very way you feel, think, understand, and experience life by sitting in a particular way.

Sound is Reality, Words are a Lie
Conversation, speech and social systems formed only because the human mind could invent a word. A word is not a reality. Neither is the mind. Sound is a reality. There are all kinds of sounds in nature. But a word is not a reality. In India, because we have over 1300 languages and dialects in close proximity, it happens quite often that one word in one language means some sacred object, but in another language it means a filthy thing. A word is a made-up thing. A sound is not a made-up thing. Sound is a certain reality. Sound can be a vehicle to pe*****te the nature of nature itself, but words do not get you anywhere because they are just made up in your mind.
Sound is a reality in which you are constantly enveloped. What you call “form” is just another level of sound. Sound is a reverberation which is an existential reality. Because of the constant usage of words and more complex formations of words, which we call sentences, language, conversation and literature, the mind has become full of words – so full that the very existential reality is obscured.
People who live in active societies cannot relate to forms anymore, they can only relate to words. Children can relate to forms in the beginning, but these days they pick up words so fast. Probably by the age of four or five they have also lost the forms and are full of words. When you are so full of your own invention, you are bound to be confused and lack clarity of life because a word is essentially a lie.
Patanjali’s definition of yoga is “Chitta vritti nirodha.” This means, “When all the modifications of your mind are gone, that is yoga.” When the fluctuations of your mind are gone, that is yoga. The fluctuations of your mind are essentially caused by the words that you generate. Generating words means you make up meanings for meaningless sounds.
Eternal waiting and Meditativeness
Nandi is a symbolism of eternal waiting, because waiting is considered the greatest virtue in Indian culture. One who knows how to simply sit and wait is naturally meditative. He is not expecting Shiva to come out tomorrow. He will wait forever. That quality is the essence of receptivity. -

Kedarnath is a very heady mixture of energies. This is a place that has witnessed thousands of yogis and mystics of every kind. When I say every kind, you cannot imagine those kinds. These are people who made no attempt to teach anything to anyone. Their way of making an offering to the world was by leaving their energies, their path, their work – everything – in a certain way in these spaces.
Adishankaracharya was last seen at Kedarnath, before he set off into the mountains. This wall with a hand and staff marks the spot.
When you think of someone on the spiritual path, you would probably think of them within a certain kind of framework in terms of a certain kind of behavior, dress or speech. But this is not a land of just that kind of spiritual person. The kind that fits into your ways of understanding has been here. But there have been many more who are utterly wild, whom you can never recognize as spiritual. But these are people who have touched the very peaks of existence. When we say “a yogi,” we do not mean someone of a certain behavior or morality. A yogi is perfectly in tune with life. So tuned in that he can dismantle life and put it back together again. The fundamental life that is you, if you can dismantle that completely and put it back, only then you are a yogi. There have been many such incredible human beings.
For a person who is seeking some kind of spiritual uplift, Kedar is a boon whose proportions you cannot imagine. That’s how it is, if one is open to this. It is very difficult to explain what it means. After all, it’s just a mountain, an outcrop of rock. But what makes an enormous difference is what has done to the space by the type of people who lived here for thousands of years. This is the place where so many yogis shed their bodies. It is something you must experience. After being born in India, before you are too old and no good for anything, you must make it once to the Himalayas.

Guptkashi, also known as ”Secret Kashi”.
The town is famous for the ancient Vishwanath temple, which is said to have been consecrated by the legendary sage Agastya himself and dedicated to Lord Shiva as Vishwanath – “Lord of the Universe”.
In the same courtyard is the famous shrine dedicated to Ardhanarishwara – the deity which is depicted as half-male and half-female – symbolizing the unity of the masculine and feminine within us.

Questioner: What is the significance of offering arati to a photo of a god or an idol?
Sadhguru: If a certain form is exuding a certain energy and you do not have the capability to simply connect with it, fire is a good medium to bring both of you together. In Indian culture, fire has been used in so many ways to establish a bond. Without fire, there is no wedding in India because it is used as a bond to bring people together.
If you look at it in an elemental way, you cannot connect with the earth or water that is there in someone or something. But if fire is built between them, something gets connected. Whether people’s jatharagni in the form of their passions is burning through or fire is being used externally – whichever way – without fire, there is no union of any kind whether it is the physical, emotional, or spiritual kind.
Taking this further, if a certain form, either in the form of a picture or a deity, is exuding a certain energy, fire is a good means to make yourself available to it. When you enter Linga Bhairavi, there is fire. People go and stand near it so that they can connect with her. It is not that she will not connect without fire; she will. But the fire is to make you conducive and available to her energy.
The akash around the fire that goes around the deity – not the fire itself – acquires a quality of the divine. So, when the fire comes to you, you don't put your hand into the fire. You take the akash around the fire and apply it to your eyes, the top of your head, or your heart to benefit from it. You are trying to take some element of the divine for your own benefit and make it a part of yourself. The whole process of arati is an effort in this direction.

Bringing precision into life
We have to work on clarity. What is it that gives us clarity of mind? A simple thing you can do to improve clarity is to handle everything you do with a certain precision. Hatha Yoga is all about precision – how your feet should be positioned, where your hands should be, how you should hold your head, how you move, how you place the things that you brought with you and so on. If you bring precision into your activity, there will be precision in your mind. You need to practice precision in every aspect of your life. How your room should be, how you go to bed – everything. Bring the meticulousness that you apply when doing an asana, into your life. You will see, slowly, the mind will become very clear. It will become meticulous with everything.
From this moment, a simple practice that you can do is when you stand up, when you sit down, when you walk, whatever you do, do it with precision and attention. Consciously register everything that is around. For example, there are five columns here, one vessel, one big rock, one pond, another four columns, one door. How tall? Looks like twelve feet. Just practice this with everything. How many steps from here to there? Don’t count “one, two…” – start walking and notice “Okay, I think that’s three,” another three, and another three. After a few days, do intervals of four, five, or eleven – without thinking, you must slowly know when you have walked twelve steps. This is yoga. This effect will happen over a period of time by itself.
The precision that you try to bring to your body, bring it to your mind too. Let the mind imitate the body. You will see, clarity will naturally come.
How important is environment in one’s growth?
Let’s look at this under a clinical lens.
Growth is either possible in a supportive atmosphere or in the removal of resistance, or a combination of both internally and externally.
You can be in a conducive environment and that’ll naturally lead to building a strong foundation to explore and fearlessness tread forward.
Removal of resistances plays an integral role in offering one freedom from restraints and biases
During early stages, the environment needs to be very conducive & nurturing as one may not have the ability to decipher and choose.
Over a period of time, if sufficient maturity comes, one naturally starts making the right choices to keep their environment right.
Then there is the matter of the internal space, which requires a closer look to remove inbuilt resistances.
In yoga, there are several practices Saucha, Vaq Shuddhi, Bhuta Shuddhi, Kriyas and more which offer an internal cleanse and further raise awareness.
If you’re geared towards growth then everything is an opportunity.
