Shanta Rasa is the state of peacefulness or tranquillity. The purpose of recreating this rasa is to depict detachment from everything or moksha, salvation. Its sthayi bhava is sama, ie, state of freedom from everything be it worldly desires or actions. Its foundation is patience, service-mindedness, philosophical knowledge, self- control, pure spirits and freedom from all kinds of bo***ge. Its deity is Vishnu and colour is white.

Adbhuta Rasa refers to the marvelous sentiment. The Sthayi bhava of the rasa is vismaya or astonishment.The awe that one feels when one comes across something divine and supernatural, some power or beauty that is remarkable and never seen or imagined before is adbhuta. It is the curiosity or the astonishment caused by seeing something unusual and magical. Its deity is Brahma and color is yellow.

Bibhatsa Rasa deals with the odious sentiment and the sthayi bhava of this rasa is juguptsa or disgust. It arises through many things causing antipathy such as seeing what is not desirable, defects and abnormality in tests, smells, touch and sound. Its deity is Shiva and color is blue.

Bhayanaka Rasa is the feeling of panic and dread brought on by the anticipation of danger. It denotes a weakness of heart and a want of strength in character. Fear is the base emotion of the Bhayanaka rasa. It's deity is Yama and colour is black.

Veer Rasa indicates heroism which is born out of the state of energy and Utsaha is its sthayi bhava. The Rasa is manifested when there is valour, heroism, mastery, pride and steadfastness. The Rasa draws upon the firmness and steadiness of the mind. Its colour is pale red and it is attributed to Lord Indra.

Raudra rasa refers to the furious sentiment used in dramatic performance. It is the rapture of wrath or extreme anger. This rasa is produced by fight, striking, cutting, mutilation and piercing in encounter, tumult of battle and the like. Its deity is Rudra and color is red.

Karuna rasa represents emotions of sorrow and compassion.This rasa is the manifestation of pain, sadness and bitterness that the character experiences as a result of the departure of or parting from loved ones, death, thwarting of desires or an undesirable event. It is associated with the color grey and its presiding deity is Yama. While the highest karuna is compassion, the original Sanskrit word karuna means “sadness”.

The Hasya Rasa is born from the sthayi bhava Hasa. In the art of acting, Hasya occupies a variegated position. Its colour is white and is attributed to Pramathas who are said to be the attendants of Lord Shiva. According to Bharata, hasya is a rasa caused by the reversal of decoration, changed conduct, speech, dress, changed or odd conduct of the limbs. The term itself means laughter. It helps one to get relief from tension and worries. Hasya is broadly classified into two types. Atmastha is the self-laughter where one is laughing on oneself while Parastha is making others laugh.

Shringara Rasa, one of the nine rasas in the classical dance forms of India, can simply be translated as erotic love, romantic love or attraction or beauty. It is considered to be the Mother of all Rasas as it gives scope to a range of other emotion such as jealousy, fear, anger, compassion, physical intimacy etc. Its sthayi bhava is Rati which is erotic love or passionate love. Lord Vishnu is the presiding deity of Shringar and its colour is light green. Its origin is traced to the pleasure of love. The term literally means to decorate, or engage in a love talk. The playful exchanges between lovers or spouses, all evoke Shringara rasa.
