NCD screening and support forms an essential part of Uplift outpatient care offering (OCO).
Organized daily in the slums of Mumbai, Uplift OCO recently saw a 33-year-old patient in Santacruz, who had come in for simple cough, cold and sore throat.
During the general checkup, the Uplift doctor found his blood pressure to be on the higher side (177/115 mmHg). The patient had no history of blood pressure nor had any symptoms related to it. Considering his age he had never gone for a checkup.

After giving the symptomatic treatment and guidance on why it is necessary to keep the blood pressure under control even if there are no symptoms, the Uplift doctor immediately referred the patient to the nearby government health post in Santacruz. Regular follow up with the patient by the Uplift doctor has ensured that the patient is taking the medicines every day.

A WHO report states that about 66 % of the deaths in 2019 in India were caused due to NCD’s and out of this the major contributor was cardiovascular (28%). Affordability, Easy Access and routine follow-up are the three essential parts of NCD management, and the Uplift outpatient care ensures this for low-income households through its mutual health protection programme.

Primary health check up at Yashwantnagar - Santacruz....Considering the high prevalence of NCD's , screening for BP and Sugar is a regular feature at Uplift's primary health care centres in Mumbai slums. Today we had a member who had come for some other health issue but on checking her BP it was 186/106 mm/Hg. Surprisingly she was already on anti hypertensive medicines. Members have to be counselled for regular check ups even if they are on medication.

While road crashes claim 1.35 million lives each year globally, India tops the world in crash deaths.
As per the Ministry of Transport and Highways data in the category of impacting vehicles truck/Lorry has the highest share of road crashes. But the irony is while are the backbone of the /logistics chain of the country they also remain one of the most neglected communities when it comes to accessing social protection. In a survey done of about 1000 truck drivers across 10 states 93% confirmed that other than wages they do not have any kind of , health or protection cover.
Uplift India Association a pioneer of protection in India and Humsafer a road safety promotion app have partnered to offer truck drivers a health protection scheme called “Biradaree” that provides Truck drivers protection against including . The scheme also provides for Physical Care and to truck drivers along with navigation support.
Maganlal (name changed) is one such who is now a Biradaree member since January 2022. In March he unfortunately met with a severe accident when his truck got completely overturned Thankfully his life was saved but he suffered fractures in his lower right leg and was admitted in a nearby hospital by the police.
Every truck driver has access to a 24 x 7 on which the drivers can call in case they need any help for health emergencies. Maganlal remembered this benefit while he was admitted and gave a call on the helpline. The doctor on the helpline after listening to the incident assured him that he will get all the help he needs.
Thereafter the Uplift staff took care that Maganlal was able to file his documents and get the reimbursement as soon as possible. Once all the required documents were received Maganlal received 100 % of the claimable expenses on the same day of submission.
