People often ask me what the one defining factor is that makes a great leader. I usually explain my answer through a real-life anecdote. ⬇️⬇️

In December 2016, I led a group of 203 individuals to Koh Tao in Thailand. Mind you, this trip was not for a beachside holiday but an , the purpose of which was to create a new Guinness World Records for the longest human chain of people formed underwater in scuba gear!

Before I proceed, do take a moment to imagine the atmosphere: 203 close confidants travelling to one of the most picturesque locations in the world to execute an activity on a scale never seen before! The excitement was at a fever pitch, & the positivity in the air was tangible.

The real test began on 25 December 2016, the day allotted for a trial attempt, before the Guinness adjudicator arrived on 26th December for the final go. The trial turned out to be a flop because all the participants had only practiced by themselves, & that too under controlled swimming pool conditions.

In this context, the scuba guides spearheading the trial identified around 20 participants who were disallowed from participating in the official attempt if we were to stand a chance of breaking the existing record. While the reasons for this judgement were diverse i.e., underlying health issues, a fear of water etc., the scuba guides’ decision was final, & as the person leading this activity, it fell on me to address the issue.

Of course, communicating with these individuals proved to be a challenging task. They had joined our group with the sole purpose of participating in this extraordinary world record-breaking effort, & explaining that they had to let go of their personal aspirations for the greater good of the team wasn’t going to be easy.

There was no time to lose though. With as much clarity of thought as I could muster, I approached the entire group & explained to them the sole purpose of the expedition: to bag a record for our country & to make our city of Pune proud. While their disappointment was palpable, they understood the risk their participation posed to their own well-being & the of the attempt.

On a happier note, our World Record attempt was successful! We passed the Guinness adjudicator’s scrutiny, & with a cohort of individuals ranging from ages 9 to 60, we remained underwater for over an hour! Moreover, those who didn’t dive, clicked photos, helped in management, cheered, & raised everyone’s spirits📣

While emotions of joy & celebration were immense, I was left reflecting on the importance & nuance of taking decisions in high-pressure situations. There was involved when it came to the need to communicate a higher purpose, and determination was required while explaining that the collective mission & goal were larger than those of the individuals’.

I believe there are lessons of true leadership in this real-life story of mine. Do share your stories & insights!

Thus, Zepto was born, with the name reflecting their focus on speed, derived from the unit known as the 'zeptosecond'.

The brand tackled challenges like establishing a reliable supply chain & setting up efficient dark stores; local warehouses optimized for rapid picking & packing were crucial for the 10-minute delivery promise. Despite the risks, the founders remained determined, driven by their vision & willingness to take risks.

Zepto stood out not only for its rapid delivery but also for its savvy technology usage. With AI & data analytics, they optimized inventory & delivery routes, pleasing customers & attracting investors, leading to significant funding & a soaring valuation. When it came to customer acquisition, Zepto strategically used aggressive marketing campaigns & discounts, understanding the Indian consumer’s penchant for value.

In a market teeming with giants like bigbasket.com & Blinkit, Zepto carved its niche through tech-enabled speed & efficiency. In this context, one would think this was enough success for a lifetime, but the founders weren’t satisfied. With the aim of diversifying, Zepto introduced the first online café, Zepto Café. This initiative is a commitment to continuous evolution & a refusal to be confined to a single service.
