Courtyard House'

This 2200 Sqft single-level home was located within a kilometer radius from Guruvayoor Srikrishna Temple. My Client was basically an Artist and his main need was to construct an energy-efficient house that would benefit from natural phenomena like cross ventilation, passive cooling, and natural lighting

So we chose to design a climate-sensitive architecture with a large open courtyard placed at the central portion of the house which would ensure uninterrupted flow of fresh air and light to the interiors and built all other spaces around the court giving a direct view from his studio, living, dining, and Entry foyer to it. Here Public and private spaces were separated by the central courtyard.
Inside, the living spaces look across the courtyard to the dining area and enhance the experience of passage from living area to dining. We retained all his existing mango trees within the site and placed the built space appropriately in between them in order to reduce heat gain from the sun.

This single-floor house consists of 3 Bedrooms, a living room, a dining room + open kitchen, a utility room, a studio workspace to exhibit his paintings and models. Roofing tiles were procured from an old factory were reused here and have been paved on GI truss roof. The use of Double layered clay roofing tiles helps in reducing heat gain from the top and are laid in interlocking pattern, allows hot air to escape. Use of timber is limited. WPC Doors and aluminum sliding windows were commonly used. This has helped in reducing construction costs.

The material palette comprises local natural stone, wood, Terracotta Hollow Bricks, clay roofing tiles, Polished Kotastone, and Kadappa stone. Thanks to Mr. Rejins for giving me a wonderful project. We’re so grateful for the trust you’ve placed in us.
