It is with profound grief and shock that we inform you of the sad and sudden demise of Shri Shakti Sinha ji, Director of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Policy Research and International Studies (AIPRIS), MSU, this morning in New Delhi due to massive heart attack. Shri Sinha ji was a distinguished civil servant, former secretary to the Prime Minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee, former Director of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, member of the Governing Body of the India Foundation, an academician and a very fine human being. He has left a void that is not easy to fill. May his soul attain peace and may his family get the strength to bear this irreparable loss.

The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Policy Research and International Studies (AIPRIS), The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda is looking for interns for a duration of 8 to 10 weeks under its Neighbourhood Initiative looking at the economies of a few neighbouring countries.

About the Project: The aim of this preliminary stage of the overall project to write a 4000 - 5000 word paper that would form the basis for a long monograph, subject to successful scrutiny by potential donors. This project arose out the paucity of good work done in India on the economies of countries located in our neighbourhood. Most analysis of these countries is focussed on the political and strategic aspects, largely ignoring the economic dimension, which often have a bearing on a country’s strategic choices. Therefore, while general statements about debt trap induced by BRI are common, the economic rationale that go into such decisions are ignored completely. We aim to study in detail the economic structures of four specific countries in the neighbourhood – Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. A rigorous SWOT framework should guide the work. AIPRIS intends to hire one intern per country.

Role: Work closely with the project head (Director of the Institute), help locate sources, go over them and make substantive contributions to the project. Independently analyse quantitative data, write and present findings in graphs. Help write and edit other products including economic analyses and blog posts.

Education/Experience Requirements: Currently pursuing or should have completed a master’s degree or higher in Economics, Mathematics/Statistics, Political Science, Public Policy, or other Social Sciences with a minor in Economics.

I wrote this piece for a print magazine (India and the World) in mid-July. The editor, Manish Chand has kindly posted it online today because as he writes, I was prescient about this sudden collapse. However all is not lost. The situation is tricky and uncertain. India would get opportunities and openings which it must work on.
