The Arch of Septimus Severus was erected in the year 203 CE to celebrate Rome's triumphs during the Parthian Wars.
It features a series of intricate reliefs recounting victorious moments in battle and was once adorned with a commemorative inscription dedicated to the emperor Septimus Severus and his two sons, Geta and Caracalla. Following the death of Severus, however, a dispute over power arose which led to the assassination of Geta. With Caracalla as the sole emperor, Geta's name was removed from the archway along with other mentions of him in official records in a process known as "damnatio memoriae."
