Top Tips for Winter Self Care ❄️
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) teaches us that to optimise our health and wellbeing, we should adjust our lifestyle in flow with the seasons. Each season has certain associations and recommendations to ensure you’re nourishing and protecting your mind and body throughout the year.
In TCM, Winter is associated with the water element, which governs the Kidneys. TCM teaches that this organ is considered to store our body’s reserves which are used in times of stress, and when the body is fighting off illness.
Winter is a time to conserve your energy in preparation for the coming Spring, so we must look inward, keep warm and slow down. Remember to:
🫖 Drink herbal tea – warm your cockles with comforting and nourishing teas filled with herbs and spices.
🍲 Favour warm foods – steer clear of raw and cold food in the Winter months and support your Kidneys with hearty seasonal soups, stews and homely recipes.
🧘♀️ Gentle exercise – make sure your exercise routines are incredibly gentle and easy going, engaging in activities such as yoga, walking, gym classes or swimming in a heated pool. Low impact exercise can not only improve circulation but also invigorate the body and mind.
🧣 Wrap up – get those thermals out and make sure to especially keep your lower back and soles of your feet nice and toasty while you get out into nature.
💆♀️ Take it easy – Winter is all about slowing down and giving yourself permission to rest and sleep lots.

Acupuncture for Headaches & Migraines 💆
The benefits of acupuncture for people with headaches has been relatively well researched, with more high-quality clinical trials, compared to many other conditions. The research indicates that acupuncture is an effective treatment option for those who suffer from headaches.
The National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE) currently recommends a course of up to 10 sessions of acupuncture for the treatment of tension type headaches and migraines.
Clinical trials have shown that acupuncture does relieve symptoms in the short-term which can be as long as a year. For more research resources, click here: https://linktr.ee/theneroliclinic

Top Tips for Autumn Self Care 🍂
The clocks are about to go back and, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this time of year is all about organisation, setting limits, protecting boundaries letting go of anything we may be holding onto. It is a time to finish any projects started earlier in the year and focus more on the internal, becoming more introspective.
In TCM Autumn is associated with the element Metal and with the Lungs. Emotionally, the Lungs are associated with sadness and grief but also with clear thinking, communication, a positive self image and the ability to relax and to 'let go'. It is a time of year to be mindful of making room for new experiences, projects and ideas to germinate and grow.
To look after our lungs particularly this season, we must:
🌬 Breathe deeply - gently filling and releasing air from our lungs
🪁 Walk outside - connect with nature and the cool clean air
🧣 Wrap up warm and protect your neck and throat
🎃 Eat warm, seasonal foods using garlic and ginger when you can
💆 Take stock, organise and let go - both in our physical and emotional world, at home or at work. Express your feelings of sadness or grief to help release them
😴 Sleep a little longer
❤️ Give yourself the care and attention you need

World Menopause Day
Today (18th October) is World Menopause Day which aims to raise awareness of the menopause and the options available for improving health and wellbeing.
A British Medical Journal (BMJ) study found that acupuncture is a 'realistic option' to treat menopausal symptoms. It can be used as a first line treatment for those who cannot or choose not to use HRT or alongside HRT and other modalities. The full study is available at the link in my bio.
As an acupuncturist, women who visit me with menopausal and peri-menopausal symptoms tell me that the treatments ease hot flushes, help them sleep better, feel less anxious, more balanced and allows them some restorative time just for them.

World Mental Health Day 2023
Today (10 October) is World Mental Health Day.
Good mental health is vital to our overall health and well-being. Yet one in eight people globally are living with mental health conditions, which can impact their physical health, their well-being, how they connect with others, and their livelihoods.
Research shows that acupuncture may benefit anxiety and depression by “acting on areas of the brain known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress, as well as promoting relaxation and deactivating the ‘analytical’ brain, which is responsible for anxiety and worry.” There is also research to show acupuncture may help alleviate stress and anxiety in women undergoing IVF, going through the menopause or suffering with PTSD.

As we celebrate 75 years of the NHS, we are proud to see traditional acupuncture being used in mainstream healthcare settings, integrated with other care provision, for the benefit of patients.
We have some fantastic examples of our members making a real difference in NHS settings and are excited about our ‘integrated projects’ work with primary care networks.
We thank everyone who is working hard to improve the recognition of acupuncture as an effective healthcare treatment.

Reminder: Wellness is a journey not a quick fix
Traditional acupuncture is a healthcare system which has been used in the East for over 2,000 years and it is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
TCM embraces a holistic approach to health and wellness with a focus on balance, connection to nature and the seasons and energy flow.

A holistic approach to your health
If you’re in a rut emotionally or struggling with a particular health concern or condition, there is a growing body of evidence which suggests acupuncture can help.
Very fine acupuncture needles are inserted into specific points on the body along meridian pathways to balance the body’s energies, stimulate healing and promote relaxation.
The emphasis of the treatment is to restore balance whilst the body is going through natural changes and help smooth the way in times of adjustment.

Acupuncture for Tension Headaches
Did you know that the National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE) currently recommends a course of up to 10 sessions of acupuncture for the treatment of tension type headaches and migraines?
Acupuncture research shows that the insertion of acupuncture needles in certain points triggers the release of endorphins and provides pain relief by stimulating nerves located in muscles and other tissues changing the process of pain in the brain and spinal cord.
Clinical trials have shown that acupuncture does relieve symptoms, at least in the short term. For some painful conditions, the benefits have been show to last at least a year.

Chinese Proverb: Where there is no movement there is pain. Where there is movement there is no pain.
Based on the principles of Chinese Medicine, in acupuncture we look at the body holistically – both your physical and emotional energy or qi should flow smoothly.
When we feel ‘stuck’ there is a lack of good flow in the body and the mind. Acupuncture can help to promote the flow of your qi again so your physical and emotional health can be restored again.

Flow with Spring’s transformative energy! 🍃
In Chinese Medicine our approach to our health and wellbeing should shift with the seasons. Each season has a number of associations and Spring is all about transformation, leaving the old behind and looking forward to the new. A time for renewal and growth. Here are some of the things associated with this season according to Chinese Medicine:
🌳 The element associated with Spring is Wood
💆 The organ is the Liver* which is in charge of the smooth flow of qi (energy) and emotions throughout the body
💚 The colour is green
😤 The emotion is anger or irritability
Keep an eye out for our tips for staying in harmony with the Spring season...
