Real Food Runners on Facebook and Strava are great for advice on this sort of thing 😀 And not just for runners!!
We’re looking into the foods that fuel our runs.
This week we’re taking a deep-dive into mixed nuts.
Mixed nuts contain high-quality protein that aids muscle recovery after exercise. They contain omega-3 fatty acids that help fight exercise-induced inflammation, and antioxidants that combat oxidative stress. With electrolytes they help your body retain and use water, aiding hydration. While zinc offers improved muscle recovery and magnesium helps prevent the build up of lactic acid.
Because of these benefits we recommend them to help fuel exercise and as part of recovery.
If you want to start improving your lifestyle, or help us share the message of a Real Food lifestyle, why not join the Real Food Runners. We’re a growing movement of 120+ members, turning our backs on ultra-processed food.
To learn how you can get involved DM us ‘runner’.
🔔 We have a new blog piece! 🔔
We've popped up Dr Louise Oliver's wonderful piece on "Breathing Inefficiently Impacts Sleep, Exercise, Mental Health, Appetite, Relationships & Addiction"
💬 “Modern living is pushing us away from living as we have been biologically programmed to live and as a consequence increasing number of individuals are not breathing as nature intended. Breathing at rest should use the nose, be quiet, slow and driven by the diaphragm – this is how we have been designed to breathe. Consider how the individual breathes whilst resting, moving and sleeping over a 24-hour period."
A massive thanks to Dr Louise Oliver for writing this piece on how important breathing is to us; an in-depth, stats-packed insightful read! 📚

Just for clarity - the menopause clinic is continuing. Though watch this space for some exciting improvements soon 😀

Another review confirming what an increasing number of studies are showing - UPFs aren't food, they don't nourish us and build health, they simply fill us with calories. They are "food-like substances" and should be treated with suspicion.

A happy afternoon studying with British Society of Lifestyle Medicine looking at how our "normal" Western culture impacts our health and healthcare systems. I loved that a Monty Python video was part of the session but it was upsetting, both to realise that a comedy show reflected a huge part of medical care, and even more so that decades later this is still the case. Lifestyle Medicine demands that we put people and communities at the heart of healthcare. Until we do that we're just going to end up with more machines that go PING ☹️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wshyX6Hw52I

Who wouldn't want feed back like this 😍 I was moved to tears by my patient's genuine delight, but also tears of frustration that she'd suffered decades of undiagnosed endometriosis, because it's "just period pain" 😬
I absolutely love this idea, turning a gloomy Monday into a day to build connections, reach out to a friend or family member and just take a moment for a cuppa
We need your help with Brew Monday again this year ☕
Every year we see lots of talk around Blue Monday and we’re fed up with it because we know it isn’t real. With your help we’re ready to take over the day again. All you have to do to join us on the 15th January is reach out for a cuppa and catch up with friends, colleagues or family! You can help us get the word out by sharing your photos and stories on social! Flood the Facebook feed with brews not blues.
Stay tuned for more info 👀
I was so happy to be asked to be involved with this project, as part of my role with SCOOP The Sustainable Cooperative, helping ensure the diet info was accurate. It's a charming book which will hopefully help our children feel more enthusiastic about eating the rainbow 😀🌈
Jersey youngsters served up a tale of colourful food and nutrition DID you eat your greens when you were younger? A new children’s book is hoping to encourage Jersey’s youngsters to eat healthily and understand the importance of good nutrition. “Rainbow Flo” is the latest book by author Penny Byrne, which was illustrated by Erin Brown and designed by Liz Wa...

Yesterday was a real mix of a day. I was able to go to the Public Health Jersey session on the food and nutrition strategy and was really pleased to hear about all the good work they are doing to try improve health with regards to food, especially for our children. It was my birthday and as an extra special treat my son got a bit of Colin the Caterpillar cake for his school snack (instead of the usual veg sticks and cream cheese). "Was everyone jealous?" I asked. "No mummy, everyone else gets cake or biscuits like that everyday" ☹️ This is depressing on so many levels. These foods should be rare and special treats, not the foods we give our children everyday as the reward for getting through the morning. It sounds draconian but maybe we do need a ban on ultra-processed high fat, sugar and salt foods in our schools - and hospitals too whilst we're at it.
Fantastic birthday card choice 😀 I try to be good 360 days of the year, but birthdays and Christmas are just one big carb fest 😋
One of the hardest things about setting up your own business, in a field there's no-one else practicing is you can feel pretty isolated. That's why I am so grateful to have found the tribe at The Neroli Clinic - Polly Ashton Clare Bourne Physiotherapy Bodyease Therapies by Nicola We may be offering all kinds of different things related to health and wellbeing but we're all very much on the same team. We had our first Christmas party since COVID last night and what a celebration it was 😀
🎄CHRISTMAS COMPETITION🎄To spread a little festive cheer I am running a competition. To be in with a chance of winning like and share the post. Winner will be notified by the 8th of December. Prize is non-transferable. T&Cs apply
I came across this graphic today and thought it was really useful. I struggle with explaining to my son why we're not buying certain foods and why his lunchbox looks very different to his friends. This helps a bit. It also stops us labelling food as bad/good which can be damaging, I like to think of them as helpful vs treats
Practicing gratitude is great for our mental and physical health. Some mornings as a cycle commuter it can be hard! But I'll give it a go: ✔️I am grateful for waterproofs ✔️I am grateful my bike has a battery in these winds ✔️my rubber boots, whilst the ugliest things ever keep my toes toasty warm and dry ✔️my exercise is done for the day✔️✔️✔️ Cycle 4 Jersey
Did you know that it's Global Prebiotics Week this week?! They really do have a week for everything now 😀 But what is a pre-biotic? So probiotics are friendly bacteria that we can consume to support our gut health eg in yogurt or other fermented foods. Pre-biotics on the other hand are foods that our gut bacteria especially like to eat themselves - they're often fibre rich foods. This lovely jar contains Sauerkraut which has the double whammy advantage of containing both loads of fibre AND being fermented 😀 I learnt to make Sauerkraut up at SCOOP The Sustainable Cooperative this summer (boy, was I smug when I got home with it!) but you can buy it from most supermarkets - or even better at SCOOP, that way you know it's local, unprocessed and marvellous!
Following the recent events of Storm Ciaran, like any major incident, it is natural and normal for children and young people to react in different ways.
Here is a video which parents and carers may find useful, which explains that it is normal to have different reactions to a major event or incident. You may find it useful to share this video with your child: www.youtube.com/watch?v=30U8oGdwuNc
There is also information on the Government website which parents and carers can use to inform themselves or share with their child or young person about the reactions we have to a major incident. You can find those leaflets on this page: www.gov.je/MentalHealthNetwork
Young people can also find support online at Kooth: kooth.com or locally, via the YES Project at yes.je
Anyone who has an appointment: I'll be in touch to reschedule. Please stay safe everyone, xx

This fertility awareness week I wanted to acknowledge the struggle that 1 in 6 of us have to bring home a baby. 8 years ago we were just embarking on our final attempt to complete our family - we were so exhausted we knew we couldn't bear to try again if this attempt failed. We were so, so lucky. But I know not everyone is. If you are struggling please do reach out to the wonderful Tiny Seeds for help and support
