BRONZE STATUETTE OF A FOUR-HEADED RAM
EGYPT, LATE PERIOD, 664-30 BC
One of the most fascinating aspects of ancient Egyptian art is the design of composite beings, either animals or deities, which combine many different forms into a single figure. This statuette is an example of this aspect of ancient Egyptian art because it combines four separate heads of ram emerging from the neck of a single animal.
The bleating, or sound made by a ram, represented in English by the word “bah” may have sounded the same to the ears of the ancient Egyptians. Via the principle of onomatopoeia by which the sound made becomes a name, the bleating of a ram may have become the root of the Egyptian word ba. In Egyptian religion the ba represents a hypostasis, or alternate manifestation, of a deity. Henri Wild over forty years ago attempted to associate the four ram’s heads with the bas of four different deities, the ba of Osiris, the ba of Geb, the ba of Shu, and the ba of Re. This identification has been supported by László Kákosy.
Jan Quaegebeur has reviewed the evidence and has concluded that when a deity is depicted with the four heads of a ram, the rams are to be identified as the ba of the sun god, Re, associated with the bas of Baneddjed (the ram-god of Mendes), Hershef (the ram-god of Heracleopolis), and Khnum (the ram-headed creator god). The composite deity so represented combines into one depiction all of the solar manifestations of Re, the sun god. Each of these manifestations represents a particular power, so when all four heads are combined into one image, the resulting image represents the sum total of all of the powers associated with the sun god Re.
