We are grateful to have had so many visitors.

The exhibition runs until Saturday, July 27th. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from noon to 7:00 PM.
However, on Friday, July 19th, we will be closing at 6 PM. Please keep this in mind when planning your visit.

Please also note that we are closed on Sundays and Mondays.

MAHO KUBOTA GALLERY は 6月28日より、ゲストキュレーターにSMLの山本憲資を迎え、山口幸士＋江﨑文武『Reflection / Reverb』展を開催いたします。
山口幸士の、景色を、光を捉えたペインティング1枚ごとに、江﨑文武がその風景からインスピレーションを受けて、楽曲を制作し絵画と音楽が一体と成ったインスタレーションが実現しました。会場ではキャンバスと譜面を並べて展示し、毎１時間ごとに自動演奏のピアノが曲々を奏でます。

MAHO KUBOTA GALLERY will hold an exhibition titled Reflection/Reverb by artists Koji Yamaguchi + Ayatake Ezaki from June 28, 2024, with Kensuke Yamamoto (SML) as guest curator. Ayatake Ezaki, inspired by the ethereal light captured in Koji Yamaguchi‘s paintings, has created music for each of the works and the result is an installation in which the painting and the music form a single work.
In the gallery, the canvases and their accompanying musical scores are hung side by side, and a self-playing piano plays the music every one hour.

Painter Koji Yamaguchi and musician Ayatake Ezaki, both in the spotlight, collaborate to create an exhibition showcases a unique style of their works. Ezaki composes music inspired by Yamaguchi’s paintings, presenting them as a unified piece of art. The curator is the ingenious trickster Kensuke Yamamoto.
We invite you to experience a space where fresh paintings and the music of a self-playing piano resonate together.

For the opening reception yesterday, Oimatsu, a traditional Japanese sweets confectionery store in Kyoto, specially prepared “Usacchi” and cat-shaped sweets. Thank you so much; they were indeed sweet and delicious.

Works from "Memory of Currency “ project

In this series of works, INOMATA implants into pearl oysters tiny 3D portraits of people who appear on bank notes around the world, such as Queen Elizabeth II, George Washington, Mao Zedong, Karl Marx and Yukichi Fukuzawa. The oyster then uses this template to create mother-of-pearl versions of the portraits. The accompanying video shows the oyster shells sinking into the ocean. We can imagine them becoming “fossil currencies”, provoking reflections on the economic system in which we live.

プロジェクト「貨幣の記憶」は、近代以前には貨幣としても使用された貝殻を現代の通貨と結びつけ「貨幣の化石」を作りだす試みです。真珠貝に福沢諭吉、エリザベス女王、ジョージ・ワシントンなど、諸国の通貨を象徴する人物像を型取った小さな核を挿入し、真珠質が核の表面を覆うことで人物の形の真珠が出来上がります。人が作り出したものではない自然の貝殻と人が作り出す通貨とが融合されることで、自然種と一体となった貨幣があらたに出現します。それは、未来の人類によって〈化石〉として再発見される可能性すら、私たちに予感させます。
