The National Clinical Trials and Translation Center (NCTTC) of the National Institutes of Health, University of the Philippines Manila is organizing the “1st Annual Clinical Trials and Translational Science Meeting: Enhancing capacities and collaborations towards patient-centered trials” September 24-27, 2024, in Manila, Philippines.
The annual meeting is jointly organized by NCTTC and ARISE-NCGM with support from the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), in collaboration with the Health Economics Research Centre (HERC), Oxford Population Health, University of Oxford.

We are pleased to announce that the 17th NCGM International Infectious Diseases Forum is taking place online on Thursday, September 5, 2024 from 15:00 to 17:30 (JST).
Under the theme "Forefront of Diagnosis & Treatment of Viral Hepatitis, and Future Prospects," the forum will primarily address trends in HBV infection and treatment in Asian countries, as well as diagnostic markers developed in Japan and the current state and future outlook of hepatitis treatment.

World Hepatitis Day, 28 July, 2024 took the theme: It’s time for action.
The date of 28 July was chosen because it is the birthday of Nobel-prize winning scientist Dr Baruch Blumberg, who discovered hepatitis B virus (HBV) and developed a diagnostic test and vaccine for the virus.
Low coverage of testing and treatment is the most important gap to be addressed in order to achieve the global elimination goals by 2030.

Visit to Thailand July 10th-18th, 2024
The Director of DIT and delegates were in Thailand from Jul 10th to 18th for the preparation of the 3rd ARISE Annual Meeting in November 2024, which will be hosted by Siriraj Faculty of Medicine, Mahidol University.
A meeting was held with Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, The Dean of the Faculty to discuss about the program and the activities for the annual meeting. Verbal agreement was reached, and the administrative procedures will follow.
A courtesy visit was also made to the Thailand Department of Medical sciences at the Ministry of Public Health where they met Dr Hideki Yanai and Ms. Shoko Sato who are running the project for social Implementation of Infectious Diseases Control Utilizing Genomic Information and Innovative Technology.
Another courtesy visit was made to the representatives of the Thailand-Japan Research Collaboration Center on Emerging and Re-emerging Infections, Dr. Kazuhisa Okada, Dr. Atsusho Yamanaka, Dr. Hiroto Mizushima. They shared about research potential on diseases caused by several viruses such as dengue virus, Norovirus that are common in Thailand.
Dr. Wada and team also met with Dr Suwadee who received Takeda grant for a 3-month fellowship at the Disease Control Center of NCGM. She was recommended by Professor Kulkanya from the Siriraj Faculty of Medicine to strengthen the capacity of Siriraj affiliated hospitals on Antimicrobial Resistance and Infectious Diseases management. DIT is happy to welcome Dr Suwadee and ready to support her stay at the NCGM.

The Department of International Trials led by Dr Koji Wada is on a business trip for the preparation of the 3rd ARISE Annual Meeting to be hosted by the Siriraj University Faculty of Medicine.
On July 10th, they had a working session with the NCC APO members to discuss on further collaboration between the two national centers in term of clinical trials conduct.

Visit to National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE), Hanoi, Vietnam
On June 14th, Dr. Koji Wada and Ms. Mai accompanied by Mr. Shohei Sasaki, First Secretary from the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam visited the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) in Hanoi for the first time. They were greeted by Deputy Director of NIHE, Assoc. Prof. Duong Thi Hong. NIHE presented their rich experience in vaccine trials and their international partnerships in clinical trials.
After the meeting, the visitors were also given the opportunity for a facility tour led by Assoc. Prof. Hoang Thu Ha, Head of the Bacterias Department, and Dr. Vu Hai Ha, Deputy Director of the Center for Clinical Trials. Both NCGM and NIHE expressed their interest in exploring potential collaborations, particularly in vaccine development for pandemic preparedness.
Visit to Bach Mai Hospital, Hanoi, Vietnam
On June 13th, Dr Koji Wada, ARISE Secretary General and Ms. Le Mai Phuong ARISE Research Coordinator and Vietnam liaison officer, accompanied by Mr. Shohei Sasaki, First Secretary from the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam visited Bach Mai Hospital (BMH) in Hanoi. They were welcomed by Director Assoc. Prof. Dao Xuan Co, Deputy Director Assoc. Prof. Vu Van Giap, and representatives from key Departments including the Clinical Research Unit, Tropical Diseases, Laboratory, and ICU departments of the BMH.
At the meeting, Dr. Wada highlighted the important role of BMH in the ARISE network and expressed ARISE’s commitment to fostering collaboration between BMH in clinical research and trials. Assoc. Prof. Co, Director of BMH pointed out the longstanding relationship between NCGM and BMH and that there is a mutual interest to explore potential collaborative opportunities. After the meeting, the ARISE Secretariat visited the Medical Coordination Committee (MCC), NCGM’s co-office in BMH.
To further strengthen clinical research collaboration to Vietnam and to ASEAN countries, NCGM signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hanoi Medical University (HMU).
Dr. Koji Wada, Director of DIT-NCGM and Secretary General for ARISE, accompanied by Ms. Mai Le Phuong, Research Coordinator and Liaison Officer for Vietnam, visited HMU facility to discuss for potential collaboration and to hand over the signed MOU.

On May 31st, during a two-week visit to Thailand, Naoki Tomotsugu as the newly appointed Executive Manager of Thailand Collaborating Office for ARISE-NCGM visited the National Cancer Center (NCC, Japan) Asian Partnership Office (APO). The visit was welcomed by Dr. Mitsumi Terada, General Manager of APO, and Dr. Yuta Sekino. The NCC APO was established in Bangkok since 2021 to support the neighboring ASEAN countries in the Asian Clinical Trials Network for Cancers (ATLAS) Project.

ARISE Project Operation WG interview series with KOLs and experts in Thailand – Part #7
With Assoc. Prof. Dr. Winai Ratanasuwan, Director of SICRES. Prof Winai shared his experience for vaccine trial during Covid-19 pandemic. He also explained about their plan expand their trial network to more sites around Bangkok, to train more nurses and investigators and increase patients pool. Moreover, SICRES is also focusing on the development of DCT. This will improve preparedness for the next pandemic.

With Assist. Prof. Dr. Suvimol Niyomnaitham, Vice Director, Clinical Research Support, SICRES. Dr. Sumivol is in charge of data management & biostatistics at SICRES. She shared that although many healthcare facilities still used paper-based, Thailand is basically familiar with digital system for trial conducts and is capable of conducting trials with high quality. At SICRES they supported Investigator Initiated Trials by developing an EDC system using RedCap.

With Dr. Sunate Chuenkitmongkol, Deputy Director of National Vaccine Institute (NVI), Thailand. Dr. Sunate explained the role of NVI in supporting vaccine development that meet with the country’s policy. During a pandemic situation, NVI will initiate the call for vaccines development in Thailand. However, she emphasized the importance of international collaboration in order to accelerate the process because in a pandemic situation, one country cannot do it alone.

With Prof Dr. Kiat Ruxrungtham, Scientific Chair of the Chula Vaccine Research Center (ChulaVRC), Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. Prof Kiat is the pioneer for the development of mRNA-based vaccine in Thailand. He emphasized on the importance of regional approach to solving global issue. A regional trial network such as ARISE can take the role to ensure quality assurance and reliability of trial conduct in the region.

With Prof. Dr. Kulkanya Chokephaibulkit, Consultant and Founding Director, Siriraj Institute of Clinical Research (SICRES), Mahidol University, Bangkok. During Covid-19 pandemic, Prof Kulkanya was actively engaging with the community even before the trials. Siriraj Hospital is a leader and advocate for the community for diseases and prevention program. Trials conduct could become relatively easy when there is trust from the community.

With Ms Nantaka Kongstan, Project Manager, Siriraj Institute of Clinical Research (SICRES), Mahidol University, Bangkok. Ms Nantaka shared her experience conducting vaccine trials during the pandemic, how they dealt with vaccine hesitancy at the beginning and strategy to recruit more naïve subjects. At the moment their hospital already has guidelines in place for the preparation of next pandemic and stays updated with new information from the ministries.

ARISE Project Operation WG interview series with KOLs and experts in Thailand – Part #1
During a two-week visit to Bangkok from end of May to early June 2024, ARISE Project Operation WG led by Naoki Tomotsugu held meetings and interviews with several KOLs and experts in vaccine trials to learn from their experience during Covid-19 pandemic especially for next pandemic preparedness and on trial operations.
#1 With Prof Emeritus Dr Punnee Pitisuttithum and Dr. Viravarn, at Vaccine Research Center (VRC) Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok. Prof Punnee explained the coordination of vaccine campaign in Thailand during Covid-19 pandemic, a collaboration effort between different ministries and hospitals. In particular, the VRC was able to develop an inactivated recombinant Newcastle Disease Virus vaccine for Covid-19, the NDV-HXP-S.

MOU signing ceremony between NCGM and Sulianti Saroso Infectious Diseases Hospital Indonesia
国立国際医療研究センター(NCGM)とインドネシア・スリアンティ・サロソ感染症病院とのMOU調印式
On November 27, 2023, the National Center for Global Health and Medicine (NCGM) had an MOU signing for clinical research collaboration with the Sulianti Saroso Infectious Diseases Hospital (SS IDH) of Indonesia. This is the second period of the MOU between the two institutions.
SS IDH as a hospital under the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (MOH RI) which has the central role for infectious diseases management in the country including handling and preventing outbreaks in Indonesia. On behalf of NCGM, Dr. Wataru Sugiura, Director of Center for Clinical Sciences (CCS), acted as a witness and signed the MOU. Whilst from SS IDH, dr. Alvin Kosasih, Sp.P, MKM, the President Director of SS IDH signed the MOU with Dr. Vivi Setiawaty, Director of Human Resources, Education and Research, as a witness. The event was attended by the SS IDH management office, Heads of Units, and staff. From NCGM, staff of the Department of International Trials (DIT, CCS, NCGM) participated online. A representative of the Bureau of Health Cooperation of the Ministry of Health of Indonesia also participated online. After the signing ceremony, as side event, there was a session to present updates on infectious diseases research in Japan and Indonesia.

2023年11月27日、国立国際医療研究センター(NCGM)はインドネシアのスリアンティ・サロッソ感染症病院(SS IDH)と臨床研究協力に関する覚書調印式を行いました。これは両機関の間での2期目の覚書となります。SS IDHはインドネシア共和国保健省(MOH RI)傘下の病院であり、同国における感染症管理の中心的役割を担っています。NCGMを代表して、杉浦亙臨床研究センター長が立会人として覚書に署名を行い、そしてSS IDHからはDr. Alvin Kosasih, Sp.P, MKM病院長が、Dr. Vivi Setiawaty人事・教育・研究部長の立会いのもと、覚書に署名されました。この調印式にはSS IDHのマネージメントオフィス、ユニット長、スタッフが会場で参加され、NCGMからはインターナショナルトライアル部(DIT、CCS、NCGM)のスタッフがオンラインで参加いたしました。また、インドネシア保健省保健協力局の代表の方もオンラインでご参加されました。調印式終了後に続き、日本とインドネシアにおける感染症研究の最新情報を発表するセッションも行われました。
