What's Passenger Legal Liability (PLL) on your Insurance Certificates?

Whether you take a comprehensive or third party cover, one common feature on your policy schedule is the Passenger Legal Liability charge. On the insurance certificate, it's marked PLL followed by vehicle passenger capacity minus the driver.

What does this cover?

In motor private covers, there's an automatic benefit limit as required by law, that covers injury to passengers, or loss of their possessions while in your vehicle (inside, disembarking, or boarding), which arises mostly out of negligent use of the vehicle. Such a liability arises out of tort (negligence, nuisance, trespass, etc).

However, for psv covers, this benefit must be purchased since the passenger is paying fare, under an unwritten contract. Any liability that arises out of contract is therefore charged for separately. Therefore, as a psv vehicle owner or driver, you are under contract to ensure safety of your passengers. Incase you breach this contract, maybe through an accident that causes injury to the passenger, or loss of their possession, the passenger can sue you for damages. The costs of such a suit is paid by your insurance company. This is the reason you buy passenger liability benefit together with your psv insurance policy. And it's mandatory for psv vehicles.

WHAT IS AN EDUCATION POLICY?

Education policy is a life assurance product, where a parent or legal guardian gets into an agreement with a life assurance company, to save an agreed amount of money on a regular basis, for a specified period of time, upon which the lumpsum is paid out to them, plus any accrued interests over the period, towards the education expenses of a named child.

In case of death of the parent or legal guardian, a specified next of kin or guardian to the child will receive the benefits in trust, upon notification of death.

Also covered is loss of income due to retrenchment, chronic/critical illness or due to permanent disability. In the former cases, the life assured will receive the benefits since they're still alive.
