The Corporation was invited to participate in the 21st Edition of the Standard
Chartered Nairobi Marathon, held on Sunday 27th October 2024, beginning at the Uhuru Gardens. A total of 64 staff members represented Kenya Re in various categories, including the 21km half marathon, the 10km marathon, and the 5km family fun run all run along the Southern Bypass.
Staff members exhibited remarkable performance across the board, each participant completing their respective races and earning well-deserved medals. Notable achievements include impressive times from marathon enthusiasts: Moses Cherutich (1:52:06), George Kingola (1:58:56), John Okumu (2:22:40), Anelick Makokha (2:12:12), Yoves Angwenyi (2:26:53), Davis Onsakia (2:20:56) and Lawrence King’ori (2:20:20) in the 21km half marathon, and Lingoline Kirui (1:18:11) and Alfred Muthoi (1:04:18) in the 10km marathon.
This event was a valuable opportunity for our staff to test their endurance, promote a healthy lifestyle, and foster camaraderie among colleagues while supporting the Standard Chartered Futuremakers initiative, which focuses on empowering the next generation. We commend all participants for their outstanding achievements and encourage everyone to continue engaging in future marathons and sporting events.

The session on "Entrepreneurship & Sustainable Insurance" was led by Mr. Shallo, Director at Kenya Reinsurance Corporation, with Charles Kariuki, Corporation Secretary, moderating. Key topics included "Beyond the Profit: Building a Sustainable Insurance Ecosystem," discussed by Ashok Shah, Group CEO of Apollo Group, and "Entrepreneurship for Impact," led by Aggrey Mulumbi FCII, Chartered Insurer, Chairman of the Bancassurance Association of Kenya. Other sessions covered balancing profit and purpose with insights from Ul Haq Qureshi, CEO of Asia Insurance, and integrating technology and sustainability in tourism, presented by June Chepkemei, CEO of Kenya Tourism Board. Eric Gumbo, Director of Kenya Reinsurance Corporation, tackled the topic of positioning Kenya as an attractive insurance investment destination.
The Innovation & Technology segment featured keynote speaker Prof. James Njihia, Dean at the University of Nairobi, with Samuel Ruugia, Head of ICT at Kenya Reinsurance Corporation, as the moderator. Dr Muchemi Lawrence of the University of Nairobi and William Makatiani, CEO of Serianu Kenya, explored AI, blockchain, and cybersecurity.
Tirus Mutoru, CEO of Applied Principles Ltd., delved into the future of (re)insurance. At the same time, Mr. Isaack Maina, CEO of Dynamic Insurance Ltd., and FA David Kanyi H.S.C. from Safaricom PLC discussed mobile technology’s role in customer engagement.
The afternoon session, focusing on Partnerships & Collaboration, was opened by keynote speaker Dr. Hillary Wachinga, Group Managing Director of Kenya Reinsurance Corporation, with Abed Mureithi, Principal Actuary & Managing Director, Zuhair Al Atout, CEO of Apex, Jordan, and Ms. BETH NYAGA, General Manager at Kenya Reinsurance Corporation, shared collaborative strategies to increase insurance pe*******on.
Dr. Ben Kajwang MBS’, Managing Director of the College of Insurance, and Nikhil Dodhia of Zamara Actuaries rounded off the day, emphasizing strategic alliances and governance for a resilient insurance market.
