The Israel Isis variety has taken 20 months to bear her first fruit here at Binuru Goat & Farm. The other varieties took as little as 6-months! Growing the yellow is an oncoming project . .... Just so you know, there are numerous yellow skinned varieties which are sweeter, tastier, rare and pricey.
The coastal region of Kenya is in the process of adopting the Dragon Fruit as a cash crop in addition to korosho and N**i (coconut).

It’s been a good leap-year Valentines
The goat side of things is not doing so well. Today I lost 4 goats 3 does and 1buck. They died.
A poisonous feed or a snake bite au zimerogwa😩
The beginning of the Dragon Fruit harvest started from October 2023. DF farmers all over the world are showing-off! Gloating about the sizes of their fruit, the one-night blossoms of flowers, and the bees. Yes we are gloating about the bees in this season.
The fruit are affordable. Grab yourself and enjoy the nutritious value.
This is amazingly surprising....
Your 2023 Wrapped This is what my 2023 sounded like on . Get your now!
Finally Binuru’s Farm’s dragon fruit arrived last night! ‘Looks can be deceiving’ and ‘don’t judge a fruit by its skin’ are a true reflection here. The mistake was to spray a concentrate of rabbit urine.
Our 18 month journey has bore us fruits and lessons ….. some are skin-deep😜
1. Good research both desk research ( google, FB, Insta, Pininterest etc) and farm visits are key.. Not one or three but ten farms in the least. Good research equals to a wider understanding of tge field you are going into. Research the future markets too.
2. Get good quality cuttings. Buy from a farm you have visited and have tasted its fruit. Mature cuttings shorten the farming duration and give good yield. I am harvesting in 18months
3. Put in the work:- in caring for your orchard. DF is a tropical cactus, the yield will be better if plants get regular water and some soil nutrients.
4. Keep revising your goals- number of fruit you want to harvest in the season. Let that inform your orchard size, number of cuttings etc. Consider the quantity you want in a season then work backwards.
5. Be part of a community of like-minded individuals. In this day and age we can join virtual groups
6. Dragon Fruit care is a full-time job. Don’t be cheated. Prepare to work …. Hard
7. It’s capital intense too; the cuttings , the pillars, the 2ft deep holes, the set-up etc
I would say one concrete pillar setup costed about 3500/- to fruiting day.
Let’s calculate
1 pillar 1000 + 200 transport+1200/-
X4 cuttings 2,000/-
2ft holes and setting of pillars 150/-
Farm hand 250/ pillar for 18months
Water and rabbit urine 100/-
Total= 3500/- x the number of pillars(an acre needs between 520-544 pillars)
8. Know your market. Identify it, appraise yourself with the requirements of your market place, secure your own market. Thembekwayo says: if you can’t market it, don’t start on it.
9. Keep a jounal. Good farms are well documented
10. Have fun. You don’t have to be an expert, or a cutting/plant seller, just enjoy your journey and share your experiences even the mistakes (the skin is a mistake). It’s a lesson

Tomorrow we’ll be visiting a DF farm far in the rural area of Hong Kong known as Lok Ma Chau….. Might you have any questions for them?
