SHEEP FARMING -PART 4

STOCKING IN SHEEP BUSINESS.🐑🐑🐑🐑

Dont start your sheep business with one animal. Plan on getting at least two ewes. Normally if you have enough fund get ten ewes and a ram.

Sheep are social animals and are more likely to be uncooperative or try to escape if kept alone. Always keep at least two sheep in each enclosure.


👉Dont keep uncastrated males (Rams) with females (ewes) in same enclosure all the time except for planned breeding purpose. (Keep here to learn about synchronized lambing in the coming weeks)

👉Decide how many male and female ewes to purchase.

✍🏻There are three main types of sheep divided by s*x:

👉females, called ewes;
👉uncastrated males,called rams;
👉castrated males, called wethers.

Ewes need to be impregnated by a Ram before they produce milk and kids, but raising a Ram can require a lot of extra work.
Rams require a separate enclosure, may develop a strong odor, and are often aggressive.

The easiest way to start your sheep farm, buy two ewes, and pay another sheep farm for the opportunity to breed your ewes with its Ram.

Many sheep farms end up with wethers when their ewes give birth to extra males. so you should consider castrating the extra males and keep just one male for between 25 and 50 females. Alternatively select the quality rams and keep in a separate enclosure for sale as breeding rams. (We shall train on procedure for selection in the coming weeks)

If you do purchase a Ram, consider one with the ideal traits in ewes without any defect so as not to introduce defects into your herd .

👉It is a wise management decision to choose a Ram to breed selected ewes and run only that Ram with the females.
