Special Olympics (SO) Kenya is an NGO that offers year round sports training and competitions for per SO Kenya relies on the supports of numerous volunteers.
SO Kenya has 5 employees working hard to promote the inclusion of individuals with intellectual disabilities within society through sports. Currently, we have about 2,000 coaches who volunteer their time as well as medical and other professionals.
When raising children with intellectual disabilities, it's important to create a stable, affectionate and encouraging environment for them to foster a sense of belonging. Be an advocate of your child's needs and actively listening and be aware of their concerns ensuring that they feel valued. It is also important to encourage independence by teaching self-help skills such as feeding. Use positive reinforcement to help them realize their capabilities. Lastly is important to be patient, take one step at a time and celebrate every milestone.
Do you know what's the hardest thing to explain? Friendship! True friendship knows no bounds. Friendships foster inclusion by creating a sense of belonging and support among individuals. Happy Friendship Day.

SO Kenya conducted a Healthy Athletes Screening at Kako Special School for the Mentally Challenged and Autistic Children, Makueni County Government where five health disciplines; Opening Eyes, Healthy Hearing, Health Promotion, MedFest and Special Smiles were offered. More than 200 athletes benefited from the screening. Good health is the most important factor in the life of an Athlete and it was a privilege for us to provide the opportunity to our Athletes to get the medical attention that they need. We thank all our partners who made it possible. Let us champion for inclusion even in our healthcare facilities so that everyone especially those with intellectual disabilities can access healthcare services without being discriminated.

Special Olympics Kenya will host an event, dubbed the "Unified Green Cup", to commemorate this year’s World Environment Day on 5th June 2024 at Karura Forest Kiambu Road. The event will involve a unified football tournament, tree planting, and other sports activities. This Green Cup aims to use sports to create awareness and amplify the call for inclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities in combating the adverse effects of climate change and ensuring that this population is not left behind as the nation seeks to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.

The Kilifi County Executive Committee member of Gender, Culture, Youth Affairs, Sports and Social Services Dr. Ruth Dama Masha, today paid a courtesy visit to the ongoing Unified Sports® coach training at Pwani University. She encouraged and inspired the coaches to continue being involved in the inclusion movement.We appreciate her office for the support and involvement in the movement.
Special Olympics Kenya in conjuction with German Federal Foreign Office and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) is conducting a 4 day Unified Sports® Coach Training in Kilifi County from 20 - 23rd May 2024 to 30 coaches. The opening ceremony was graced by Special Olympics Kenya Board Chair, Chief Officer - Department of Gender, Culture, Social Services & Sports, TSC Deputy Director - Kilifi County government and Kenya Academy of Sports
A total of 20 participants from several Federations attending a 2-day Special Olympics Unified Sports® Workshop (16th and 17th May 2024) at Kenyatta University Conference Centre (KUCC). Special Olympics Kenya obtained support from the German Federal Foreign Office and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) to carry out a Unified Sports® Coaches training. The project will focus on empowering Sport Federations, Sports teachers, NGOs working with persons with intellectual disability and community sports clubs where persons with intellectual disability are engaged, to offer sports training that are inclusive of those with intellectual disabilities. The workshop will provide the participants with the capacities to offer / incorporate Unified sports training sessions in their respective contexts thereafter.
Special Olympics Kenya (SOK) trained 20 Motor Activity Training Program (MATP) participants (4 Physiotherapists, 5 Occupational Therapists, 3 SNE teachers, 3 Athlete Leaders, 2 Sport trained coaches and 3 SOK staff members) on 2nd & 3rd May 2024 at Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) Nairobi. The Special Olympics MATP is designed for athletes with severe or profound intellectual disability who are unable to participate in Official Special Olympics sport competitions because of their skill and/or functional abilities.
Thereafter on 3rd May, SO Kenya together with the trainees introduced MATP activities to 10 athletes with severe / profound disabilities and their caregivers in an event dubbed “Come and Try MATP Event”. It was an opportunity to show case MATP and show off the fun and progress that can be achieved through the programme.
Special Olympics Kenya Program Overseer, Susan Masila Hsc was today invited to the Special Schools Heads Association of Kenya (SSHAK) 3rd conference to make a presentation and introduce and reintroduced Special Olympics to the heads of Special Schools. This is with the aim of ensuring that learners with Intellectual Disabilities in various schools across the country are not left behind.
Special Olympics Kenya was privileged to showcase Unified Sports®️ in beach volleyball during the closing ceremony of Under-23 Kenya Youth Inter Counties Sports Association (KYISA) games that were held in Malindi, Kilifi County. This is a step towards making KYISA games inclusive. Looking forward to the next edition where will hopefully have unified teams participate in a unified sports competition in atleast one sport.
Autism may present challenges and complexities, but it also brings unique strengths and abilities. It is important to recognize the valuable contributions of people with autism to the society.

Our Story
Founded in 1978, Special Olympics is a global organization that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sport. Through programming in sports, health, education and community building, Special Olympics changes the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and raise awareness about their talents and abilities - as well as the injustice, isolation, intolerance and the inactivity they face.
Special Olympics Kenya provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
