Q: How many children (0-12 yrs.) have been infected with COVID-19? Are children free from risk?

A: Technically speaking, children can catch COVID-19 as easily as adults. There have been a number of instances, however, where children were not infected by their grandparents or parents. This could be due to a variety of factors. For example, children may experience lesser symptoms of the disease, and children usually have fewer underlying diseases or complications that would increase risk. Additionally, children don’t have the same opportunity to come into close contact with others as do adults who may still be working or socializing. Children under 1 year of age who have a chronic respiratory illness and/or already show signs of pneumonia require extra care and prevention, as there is a greater risk of infection with more severe symptoms.
