I have back pain associated with my scoliosis. Will the surgery relieve it?
Immediately after surgery, there will be more pain than before, but this usually resolves over a period of a few weeks to a few months. Most patients report that their back pain is better at one year after surgery than it was beforehand.

Everyone — whether there is scoliosis or not — has some back discomfort from time to time. Expecting to never have any future back pain is unrealistic.

How successful is surgery for scoliosis?
Spinal fusion is very successful in stopping the curve from growing. Today, doctors are also able to straighten the curve significantly, which improves the patient's appearance.

27/06/2022

The operation for scoliosis is a spinal fusion. The basic idea is to realign and fuse together the curved vertebrae so that they heal into a single, solid bone. With the tools and technology available today, scoliosis surgeons are able to improve curves significantly.

Scoliosis is a deformity affecting mainly women. Most
patients are not operated and sustain an unbalanced spine,
which might progress over the years (depending on severity
of the curve). Pregnancy is a special event in a woman’s
life. She undergoes major hormonal, weight, and bodily
changes in a short period. These changes lead to modifications
in form of temporary hyperelasticity of supportive
connective tissues ultimately allowing widening of the
pelvic ring for the birth of a child. The conventional wisdom
is that scoliosis curves are not affected by pregnancy;
however, there have been cases when pregnancy may have
been associated with acceleration in curve progression
eventually leading to surgical scoliosis correction.
In this study we aim to see if the conventional wisdom
stated in textbooks is supported by the medical literature
and if there are specific groups of patients who are at increasing
risk of curve progression during pregnancy.

What is the difference between Kyphosis and Scoliosis?
Kyphosis
Kyphosis is the condition which causes what’s sometimes called a “hunchback”, people with this condition tend to hunch forward, and, as you may have already realised, it’s getting far more common today than ever before.

But isn’t the spine supposed to bend forward slightly? – yes, it certainly is, however, when this forward bend becomes too pronounced it can become an issue. As a general guide, it’s normal to have a mid-back kyphosis (backward c-shape curve) at approximately 40 degrees. Above this, unpleasant symptoms may result.

Typically, patients complain of aching and stiffness in their mid-back and lower back. It worsens when weight-bearing, especially when doing activities that require repeated bending such as gardening. Often, teenagers are noticeably hunched from spending hours on their phones, tablet’s or PC’s – a trend which often worsens into adulthood. Most age groups are at risk of Kyphosis, although there is probably a stronger link with lifestyle than with age.

Scoliosis
Whereas Kyphosis causes “forward hunching” posture, related to an excessive forwards bend in the spine, scoliosis causes a side to side curvature of the spine resulting in a distinctive scoliosis profile.

Unlike Kyphosis, Scoliosis tends more often to be a serious condition which, in most cases, progresses (sometimes rapidly) without proper treatment. While Scoliosis can cause pain, it does not always, and in many cases it is only detected through screening or is noticed by friends of family members during a trip to the beach or when changing clothes. Whereas Kyphosis is quite easy to spot. Scoliosis can progress to a significant degree without any obvious signs, so screening is a very good idea to enable early detection.

14/06/2022

Kyphosis is curvature of the spine that causes the top of the back to appear more rounded than normal. Everyone has some degree of curvature in their spine. However, a curve of more than 45 degrees is considered excessive.

These exercises are general exercises that can be used prior to initiating a physical therapy program that will highlight individualized corrections for specific curves. They are not specific to Schroth treatment, but will improve proprioception, spinal mobility and stability.

1) Pelvic Tilts Lying
Lying on back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Flatten back by tightening stomach muscles and buttocks. Hold for 5 seconds, breathing normally.
Repeat __10__ times per set

2) Cat-Camel
On hands and knees, maintain tight abdominals with head straight (Photo 1). Take a deep breath in and lift your lower rib cage, round your back and relax your neck (Photo 2). As you breathe out, lower your chest towards the floor, looking slightly upward. Return to beginning position with tight abdominals.
Repeat __10__ times per set

3) Double-Leg Abdominal Press
Lying on back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor (Photo 1), keeping your back in a neutral position. Raise your legs off the floor one at a time so that your knees and hips are bent at 90° angles (Photo 2, 3).
Push your hands against your knees while pulling your knees toward your hands, which will engage your abdominal muscles (Photo 4). Keep your arms straight! Hold for three deep breaths.
Repeat __10__ times per set

4) Single Leg Balance
(If possible, perform in front of a mirror to help visualize a straight spine.)
With your eyes open, bend one knee up and balance on one foot. At first you may use your hands, like holding the back of a chair, table, or the wall. As balancing gets easier, take your hand(s) away and place them out to the side. Challenge yourself by bringing your arms across your chest. Close your eyes for an even greater challenge.
Repeat __5__ times per set

Scoliosis is a term used to describe any abnormal, sideways curvature of the spine. Viewed from the back,
a typical spine is straight. With scoliosis, the spine can curve in one of three ways:
 The spine can curve to the left, shaped like the letter “C”
 The spine can curve to the right, shaped like a backwards letter “C”
 The spine has two curves, shaped like the letter “S”
The spine can be considered as building blocks, similar to the figure above. The long side of the block represents lengthening (stretching) of your muscles. The short end of the block illustrates shortening (contracting) of your muscles. Both extremes affect your ability to use your back muscles appropriately for posture and functional activities. It is important to attain and maintain a straight spine in order for your muscles to be used at their full functional level. To do so, you must become more aware of your body, especially your spine, in order to use self-correction to change your spine’s position during daily activities.

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that most often is diagnosed in adolescents. While scoliosis can occur in people with conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most childhood scoliosis is unknown. Most cases of scoliosis are mild, but some curves worsen as children grow.

There is certainly a consensus throughout the literature that ice acts as a great analgesic (pain numbing agent) by cooling the skin's temperature.
However, the impact on underlying muscles is non-existent, as muscle temperature remains unchanged from topical ice application.
What we are much less certain of now then we were in 1978, is it's healing properties.
Anecdotally (and likely due to the analgesic effect) most people report ice makes injuries "feel better", at least in the short-term.
But what impact does immediately icing an injury have in the mid to long-term?In 2014, Dr Mirkin acknowledged changes in the research and, as any evidence-based scientist would, retracted ice from his initial protocol.
He stated that coaches had been using his "'RICE' guideline for decades, but now it appeared that both ice and complete rest may in fact delay healing, instead of helping" What Dr Mirkin is referring to is the necessary benefits of the inflammation process.
When we injure ourselves, our body sends signals out to our inflammatory cells (macrophages) which release the hormone Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1).
Although when ice is applied, we may actually be preventing the body's natural release of IGF-1 and therefore delaying the initiation of the healing process Ice was finally revoked in 2019 from the injury management process with the latest and most comprehensive acronym: PEACE & LOVE (Protection, Elevation, Avoid Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, Compression, Education & Load, Optimism, Vascularisation and Exercise)

Icing an injury typically takes place immediately after the injury occurs. Using a cold compress or ice pack on a strained muscle can decrease inflammation and numb pain in the area. Icing is effective at reducing pain and swelling because the cold constricts blood vessels and decreases circulation to the area.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a chronic, debilitating condition. It is characterized by extreme fatigue that lasts for at least six months. The fatigue worsens with physical or mental activity but doesn’t improve with rest. Symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome vary.

Symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome
At first the fatigue is similar to the flu.

Fatigue
Severe headaches
loss of memory or concentration
sleeping problems
muscle pain
sore throat

No single cause has been found, but there are theories: The immune system may play a role in the symptoms of CFS and some other chronic illnesses. CFS appears to be autoimmune in nature and could be an autoimmune disorder. Environmental factors may play a role in the development of CFS. A genetic predisposition may play a role. It’s also possible that a change in the immune system could occur. CFS has been linked to viruses such as Epstein-Barr, cytomegalovirus, and mononucleosis. The body’s internal clock may be affected. The body’s circadian rhythm is affected, which could affect energy levels and wakefulness. Some experts have theorized that a circadian rhythm disorder could be to blame for the chronic fatigue.

16/05/2022

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a disorder characterized by extreme fatigue or tiredness that doesn’t go away with rest and can’t be explained by an underlying medical condition.

CFS can also be referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) or systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID).

The causes of CFS aren’t fully understood yet. Some theories include viral infection, psychological stress, or a combination of factors.

Because no single cause has been identified, and because many other conditions produce similar symptoms, CFS can be difficult to diagnose.

There are no tests for CFS. Your doctor will have to rule out other causes for your fatigue when determining a diagnosis.

While CFS was previously a controversial diagnosis, it’s now widely accepted as a medical condition.

CFS can affect anyone, though it’s most common among women Trusted Source in their 40s and 50s. There’s currently no cure, but treatment can relieve symptoms.
