Optimal Modulation and Control for Power Electronic Systems

▶| Petros Karamanakos

Petros Karamanakos is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Information Technology and
Communication Sciences, Tampere University, Tampere, Finland. He received the Diploma and
the Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the National Technical University
of Athens (NTUA). His main research interests
lie at the intersection of optimal control and modulation, mathematical
programming and power electronics, including model predictive
control for utility-scale power converters and ac variable
speed drives.
Petros received one Prize Paper Award of IEEE Transactions and
two Prize Paper Awards at IEEE conferences. He is a Regional
(R8—Europe, Middle East and Africa) Distinguished Lecturer of
IEEE PELS, and he regularly offers lectures and tutorials at PhD schools, conferences, and
other events. He also serves as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Industry
Applications, and he is an IEEE Senior Member.

⏺| Topic

Optimal modulation, such as optimized pulse patterns (OPPs), can produce very low har-
monic distortions. However, due to inherent difficulties, OPPs cannot be easily utilized in a
closed-loop control setting with conventional control techniques. This lecture discusses how
optimal control can enable the design of high-bandwidth controllers that can fully harvest the
advantages of OPPs. Moreover, aspects that relate to the control concept, formulation, and
real-time implementation are analyzed. The superior steady-state and dynamic performance
of the presented control algorithms is demonstrated with two different case studies, namely a
low- and a medium-voltage variable speed drive system.

Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing for a Battery Management System (BMS) refers to a testing method where the BMS is integrated with a simulated battery system and tested in real-time. This testing method provides a way to validate the performance of the BMS without having to physically test it with an actual battery, which can be both time-consuming and costly. It is a valuable tool for verifying and improving the performance of a BMS, as it provides a way to test the BMS in a realistic yet controlled environment.

Hadi Arbid is a Computer Engineering graduate and an expert in App and Web Development using Java. Hadi also has community management experience, where he led IEEE LIU Student Branch to win various awards and distinctions.He has been part of LIU Events Club and currently the president of LIU Alumni Association, and has social media management experience, where the reach combined exceeded half a million views.

Jaafar Bero has a double major in Radio & TV and Public Relation, also 2 Master’s degrees in Music Production and Education Management. Jaafar also created LIU Music Club where it was the first step of a lifelong story, which is the creation of LIU Clubs Community, a community that has around 20 clubs and more than 1200 members in the Lebanese International University. From this point, he started a new position in Lebanese International University’s administration, and currently, he’s responsible for career services, events, communications and social media of our university.
