HAPPY MATTU PONGAL 2024
Mattu Pongal, which is the third day of the Pongal festival, is dedicated to expressing gratitude to cattle, particularly cows, for their significant contribution to agriculture and farming. Cattle play a crucial role in various agricultural activities, and Mattu Pongal is a day to honor and acknowledge their hard work and importance in the farming community. Here are some reasons why Mattu Pongal is celebrated:
Agricultural Assistance:
Cows are traditionally used in plowing fields, helping farmers prepare the land for sowing crops. Their contribution is vital to the success of agricultural activities.
Milk Production:
Cows provide milk, a primary source of nutrition for many people. Milk is used to make various dairy products, and the dairy industry is closely tied to agriculture and rural livelihoods.
Fertilizer Production:
Cow dung is a valuable source of organic fertilizer. It is used to enrich the soil, enhance crop yields, and promote sustainable farming practices.
Symbol of Prosperity:
Cattle are considered a symbol of prosperity in rural communities. Their well-being and health are directly linked to the prosperity of the farming households.
Cultural Significance:
Cattle have been an integral part of Indian agrarian culture for centuries. Celebrating Mattu Pongal is a way of honoring this cultural connection and expressing gratitude for the animals that have been essential companions in agricultural activities.
Jallikattu Tradition:
In some regions, Mattu Pongal is marked by the traditional sport of Jallikattu, where young men attempt to tame and control bulls. While controversial due to safety concerns, Jallikattu has cultural and historical roots and is seen by some as a way of showcasing bravery and strength.
Overall, Mattu Pongal is a day to recognize the invaluable role that cattle play in the lives of farmers and the agricultural practices that sustain communities. It emphasizes the harmonious relationship between humans and animals in the context of traditional farming.

10 December 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of one of the world's most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, color, religion, s*x, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 and sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.
Warmest wishes to you on your very special day.
We hope that you continue to change the lives of others with your positivity, love, and beautiful spirit. Riyas Ahamed

We are thrilled to announce that we are going to launch an environmental protection and restoration project as "GreenBatti" to have a lasting impact on our environment for our future generation.
The project will have activities such as seed balls preparation and dispersal, tree planting, Mangroves ecosystem preservation and Zero plastic movement to have Cleaner and Greener Batticaloa district for our next generation.
As a first step of this project
We focus on reforestation, from 2002 to 2022, Batticaloa lost 171 ha of humid primary forest, making up 7.2% of its total tree cover loss in the same time period. Total area of humid primary forest in Batticaloa decreased by 2.2% in this time period. From 2001 to 2022, Batticaloa lost 2.40 kha of tree cover, equivalent to a 4.9% decrease in tree cover since 2000. To overcome the issue and uplifting the forest area in Batticaloa district, we have planned to have “Seed balls preparation and dispersal" activity inside the "GreenBatti" project in collaboration with Central Environmental Authority and SDGYNSL of Batticaloa.
Seeding is a crucial aspect of ecological restoration and environmental conservation efforts. However, conventional seeding methods often face challenges such as inefficient dispersal, poor germination rates, and susceptibility to natural elements. In response to these challenges, our organization is proposing a Seed Ball Preparation and Dispersal activity, aiming to enhance the efficiency of reforestation and ecological rehabilitation initiatives through the use of seed balls. Seed balls, also known as earth balls, are an effective and sustainable approach to improve seed dispersal and increase the survival rate of seeds.
The “Seed balls preparation and dispersal" activity of “GreenBatti” project, this year aims to produce 0.25 million seed balls in eight divisional secretariat areas out of fourteen in Batticaloa district which are a convenient and effective method of distributing seeds in a protective clay and compost casing. These seed balls can be scattered across barren or deforested areas in three divisional secretariats in Batticaloa district and they are known to be more resilient in adverse conditions compared to traditional planting methods.
As a passionate advocate for sustainable practices and environmental stewardship, we believe that this initiative can have a significant and lasting impact on our local ecosystem.
It’s an honor to have .A.M.Riyas Ahamed, Riyas Ahamed Senior Lecturer, Head, Dept of Biological science, Faculty of Applied Science, South Eastern University of Sri Lanka as a resource and mentor of this project. He is an environmentalist and author of plenty of environment related books and he is the one, has been engaging in seed balls preparation and dispersal in Sri Lanka since couple of years by encouraging youngsters. It’s also an honor to have Dr.Deshapriya S.Wijetunge, Director General SUNFO, as a chief advisor for this project activities.
Stay tuned for exciting updates on the project and initiatives we will be able to launch with these incredible resources.
Together, we're creating a world where we can live a life peacefully.
Together, we can make a positive impact on our environment!
Let's stand united for a cleaner, greener tomorrow!
In December 2015, the UN General Assembly designated 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day, calling on countries, international bodies and civil society to raise tsunami awareness and share innovative approaches to risk reduction.
The word "tsunami" comprises the Japanese words "tsu" (meaning harbour) and "nami" (meaning wave). A tsunami is a series of enormous waves created by an underwater disturbance usually associated with earthquakes occurring below or near the ocean.
