We’re increasing our reliance on solar energy!

Back in 2010, we were among the first to champion solar energy in the hospitality industry. This year, we’re investing over USD 1 million to expand our solar PV systems by 1.6 megawatts (MW) across our hotels by July 2024. Installation commenced in 2023, currently standing at 65% completion.

Over the years, we have implemented solar PV systems amounting to 925 kilowatts (kW) across our properties, including a 40 kW system at our corporate office in Colombo. In 2023 alone, we generated 1,069 megawatt-hours (MWh) of solar energy, equivalent to powering 13,490 households and mitigating the release of 608 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

With the forthcoming expansion, our solar PV capacity will increase to 2.6 MW, tripling the current contribution from 8% to 24% of the total electricity usage across all our properties.

This investment aligns with Sri Lanka’s commitment to sustainable and green development. By contributing to the nation’s ambitious plans, we hope to support Sri Lanka’s goal to primarily meet its electricity needs through renewable energy sources by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

A small piece of history about our home in the scenic city of Nuwara Eliya - The beloved hill country mansion, Jetwing St. Andrew’s, was originally a Scots Club, which was transformed into St. Andrew’s Hotel in 1891.

In 1987, Herbert Cooray, the founding father of Jetwing, acquired the hotel, and over the years, the property underwent refurbishments to suit the changing times while preserving its original elegance.

Sustaining Nature’s Kidneys

Wetlands, often referred to as nature’s kidneys, play a crucial role in filtering pollutants from water, making them essential for human well-being. Unfortunately, wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate—three times faster than forests—making them Earth's most endangered ecosystem.

Many of our Jetwing hotels and villas coexist with wetlands, that offer essential ecosystem services to our communities, and transform our properties into biodiversity hotspots. A testament to our commitment to conserving biodiversity, Jetwing Vil Uyana, a once degraded and abandoned farmland was transformed into a wetland. This man-made sanctuary now hosts a diverse array of rare and endemic species, including small wildcats like the fishing cat, otters, crocodiles, and even freshwater fish that naturally migrated from surrounding areas.

Jetwing Kaduruketha, nestled in the Southeast of Sri Lanka, stands as our agricultural haven. Through conscious adoption of organic farming and regenerative agricultural practices, we have witnessed an increase in biodiversity, particularly in the rising number of butterfly and bird species observed.

Meanwhile along the banks of the Mahamodara River in Galle, Jetwing Kurulubedda is a sanctuary for a myriad of birds and amphibians.

Our commitment to sustaining these ecosystems involves abstaining from harmful chemicals in hotel operations, minimizing plastic usage, treating and recycling wastewater, and actively educating our associates and communities.
