Sri Lanka is home to a dazzling array of gemstones, including sapphires, rubies, cat’s eyes, spinels, garnets, topaz, beryl, and quartz. Many of these precious stones are sourced from Rathnapura, the island’s famed "City of Gems," renowned for its rich gem mining heritage. In this region, the gem-rich gravels known as "illam" yield a stunning variety of gemstones.
Skilled artisans, using traditional hand-powered tools, meticulously shape these rough stones into some of the world’s finest gems, which are then sold at prominent trade hubs in Colombo, Ratnapura, and Beruwela.
