How to identify fake bookings on OTAs
It might be difficult to spot false reservations made through Online Travel Agencies (OTAs), as con artists frequently devise new strategies. However, there are various methods you can use to spot possible bogus reservations:
Verify Contact Information :- Confirm that the visitor's provided contact information is accurate. To make sure the phone number, email address, and other contact information follow the typical patterns, you can cross-check them.
Unusual Booking Behavior :- Keep an eye out for bookings that don't follow the norm, such last-minute reservations made using outlandish payment options or requests for numerous rooms but with no information.
Verify Consistency :- Make sure the information is consistent. For instance, the number of guests should be appropriate for the kind of room and length of stay.
Research the Guest : -Use social media or online search engines to look up information on the visitor. If the visitor's information is scant or doesn't correspond to their online persona, that could be cause for concern.
Keep a watch out for Repeated Attempts:
Be wary of repeated attempts to make a reservation using various names, email addresses, or credit cards. This can be an indication.
Staff Education : - Inform and prepare your staff on how to spot frequent indications of false reservations. They may serve as an additional set of eyes to spot potential scams.
Please keep in mind that while using these techniques, you should strike a balance between being vigilant and providing your customers with a great experience. Some valid reservations could display odd patterns. If you're not sure, think about asking the visitor for further confirmation before acting.

Bed banks
A bed bank (also called a wholesaler) is a B2B company that purchases rooms from accommodation providers in bulk at discounted, the static price for specific dates, and sells them to OTAs, travel agents, destination management companies, airlines, or tour operators.
When it comes to hotels’ revenue management there are two different rates.
· B2C (Rates directly offered to guests).
· B2B (Rates offered to business partners)
B2C rates,
Rates which are offered to clients directly, B2C rates are also extended to all OTAs (Online travel agencies)
B2B rates.
Rates are offered to business partners. B2B rates are lower than the B2C rates, as travel agencies need to markup the rates. B2B rates are not supposed to display on (OTAs) online travel agencies and metasearch engines.
Disadvantages of B2B rates are being sold on online travel agencies
Nowadays as bed banks are connected with OTAs, Bed banks extend their B2B rates to OTAs, As B2B rates are available on B2C platforms, a lot of rate parity issues and confusion have been created for both hotels and guests.
Inconvenience caused to guests.
· Guests are under the impression of that they have made the booking with OTA. But hotels receive the bookings through a travel agency. Upon arrival when guests produce the confirmation that they have been received from OTA, the front desk agent is unable to locate the booking under OTAs. The guest has received the confirmation from an OTA and the hotel has received the booking request from a travel agent. This may cause delays in check-in and unhappy guests.
Inconvenience caused to the hotels.
· As clients make bookings with B2B rates on B2C platforms, hotels receive bookings with low rates. Hotels lose revenue.
· It creates a lot of rates parity issues which cause losing visibility on B2C platforms.
How to minimize the revenue losses.
· Do not offer heavily discounted rates to bed banks.
· Provide them with rates with a low room allocation and longer release period.
· Continuously monitor and bring this issue to their attention.

Reasons to focus on the online market segment.
Hotels are benefited in a number of ways by focusing on the online market segment. As per recent research by 2023, about 700 million people will make their hotel bookings online.
Some of the Benefits.
1. B2C rates are published on booking engines such as Brand website, Booking.com, Agoda, and Expedia. B2C rates are dynamic, Hotels have the opportunity to fluctuate the rates as per the market demand and the behaviors of the competitors. By implementing this process Hotels could fill their empty rooms during the low season and get the maximum yield during the season. In fact, this is a part of revenue management, and several tools, such as proper forecast/ channel managers/rates shopping tools are needed.
2. As B2C rates are higher than B2B rates overall room revenue will be increased.
3. Hotels could directly get in touch with the guests from the point of booking is made. This allows for getting guests’ preferences prior to arrival. So that hotels could make the necessary arrangements in advance. Guests will be delighted and have a great stay at the hotels.
4. As there are no third parties involved, hotels could make extra revenue by arranging airport transfers, Excursions, etc.
5. For B2C booking payments are made prior to arrival or before departure. Credit periods and payment follow-up are not involved. This will reduce a lot of the cost of collecting credits.
6. Most of the guests who book hotels online would be repeat clients. They would be loyal to the hotels.
7. Hotels have the opportunity to get guests’ reviews (Guests' reputation) . Gust will share their experiences with the hotels. This is like free marketing to hotels.
