The Panama Canal, an amazing feat of engineering, is a crucial waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Planned and built in the early 20th century, this route has played a vital role in worldwide trade and ocean activities.

This iconic canal located in Central America, the Panama Canal is about 50 miles long and varies in width, with the narrowest part being around 300 feet. Placed between North and South America, it acts as an important link connecting the two big oceans.

The importance of the Panama Canal is huge for global trade. By offering a shortcut for ships, it reduces the time and money spent significantly. Ships going through the canal avoid the long and dangerous trip around the southern tip of South America, making trade between the East and West more efficient.

Comparing shipping through the Panama Canal with other routes shows it's big advantage. Ships using the canal can save a lot of time, delivering goods faster and using less fuel. This efficiency has a ripple effect on global trade, changing shipping paths and supporting economic growth.

The Panama Canal is like a traffic cop for global trade, making ships move faster and easier. It's not just a shortcut between oceans; it shows how smart planning and building things can really change how the whole world does business. This strategic waterway silently underscores the impact of effective decision-making, illustrating its crucial role in improving global connectivity for everyone.

48 undergraduates of Ocean University of Sri Lanka visited the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) today and they were given a detailed tour of the port. The tour included visits to the port’s RORO yard, warehousing facility and logistics. We visited JCT and ECT terminals.

The delegation was briefed on the current volume growth, operational activities, and the port industrial park. The port’s security protocols and safety measures were also part of the discussion.

We all are thankful for our lecturer Nimesh Indika and Mr. Chamara Wijayawickrama for this great opportunity. 🤝🖤

The Cape of Good Hope, located at the southern tip of Africa, has been a pivotal maritime chokepoint with historical and contemporary significance in global trade. Explored by Bartolomeu Dias in 1488, it became a vital route during the age of exploration, offering an alternative to the perilous overland paths to the East. The Dutch East India Company later capitalized on this route during the spice trade.

In the modern era, despite the emergence of the Suez Canal in 1869, the Cape of Good Hope maintains its strategic importance. The canal's occasional closures due to geopolitical issues or natural disasters highlight the Cape's continued role in global logistics, providing an essential alternative route. The region's challenging navigation conditions, marked by unpredictable weather, strong currents, and storms, make it a test for mariners' skills and technology.

The economic impact of the Cape is undeniable. Shipping companies often resort to the Cape Route when disruptions occur at the Suez Canal, emphasizing its crucial role in maintaining the flow of international trade. As a symbol of exploration and a formidable passage, the Cape of Good Hope continues to shape global maritime trade, connecting nations and facilitating the movement of goods across the world's oceans.

The Strait of Gibraltar is a narrow waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates Europe from Africa. It provides the only natural passage for ships to travel between these two bodies of water, making it a strategic location for trade routes linking Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
It is located between the southern coast of Spain and the northern coast of Morocco.

The strait is approximately 36 miles (58 kilometers) long and varies in width from 8.7 miles (14 kilometers) at its narrowest point to 27 miles (43 kilometers) at its widest.

The Strait of Gibraltar is one of the few places in the world where another continent can be seen on most days. Viewers from Morocco can see the continent of Europe, while people in Spain can view the continent of Africa.

It is one of the busiest waterways in the world and approximately 300 ships cross the Strait every day, about one ship every 5 minutes which amounts to more than 10% of the international traffic. The strait provides access to several important ports on both the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, including the ports of Algeciras, Tangier, and Ceuta.

The strait is a critical route for the transportation of energy resources, particularly oil and natural gas. Tankers carrying oil from North Africa and the Middle East must pass through the strait to reach European markets, making it a key artery for energy supply to the region.

In summary, the strategic location of the Strait of Gibraltar makes it a vital conduit for global maritime trade, providing access to key ports, facilitating the movement of goods and energy resources, and serving as a critical link in international trade routes.

The Malacca Strait is considered the world's longest strait , spanning 800 kilometers in length and 65 to 250 kilometers in width. At its narrowest point, it measures 2.8 kilometers with a minimal channel depth of 23 meters. This vital maritime chokepoint connects the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean through the South China Sea, serving as a crucial route for ships traveling from the Horn of Africa and the Persian Gulf to East Asia and the Pacific Ocean.

It's not just about ships going back and forth; the Strait also help different provinces and countries around it communicate better. China, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea all rely on these waters for their economies.

Every year, around 100,000 ships pass through here, carrying about a quarter of the world's traded goods. This includes important cargo like liquid and gas energy resources, which are crucial for the economies of the region and the entire world. Australia, in particular, depends crucially on the Strait of Malacca, and Singapore for most of its liquid energy supplies. So, for Australia, these waters are a big deal for national security in the Indo-Pacific.

The strait has been a busy place for trade for a long time, but they've also had issues with too many ships and piracy, especially in the narrower parts. To tackle these problems, navies from countries like Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore have joined forces to keep the waters safe and secure. This teamwork highlights how important this waterway is for everyone involved.

Overall, the Strait of Malacca serve as a vital artery for global trade. By navigating challenges together, nations reinforce the importance of this maritime route in fostering economic connectivity and cooperation across the Indo-Pacific.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway that connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It is 35 to 60 miles (55 to 95 km) wide and separates Iran (north) from the Arabian Peninsula (south) and is deep and relatively free of maritime hazards. The Strait of Hormuz is bordered by several countries, including Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman. These countries are also the ones that control and govern this strait. There are a few islands that lie within the Strait of Hormuz. They are called Hengam, Hormuz, and Qeshm. Strait of Hormuz is a primary vein for the world's oil supply, transporting approximately 21 million barrels per day. A third of the world's liquefied natural gas also passes through the strait.

In order to regulate the movement of large ships in these constrained waters, the UN's International Maritime Organization has recognized a Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS). The TSS consists of two mile wide shipping lanes, one for incoming traffic and one for outgoing traffic. These two shipping lanes are separated by a two mile buffer zone. Overall, the narrow confines of the TSS offer oil tankers and other large commercial ships very little room for maneuver and very little capability to avoid obstructions within the TSS.

The Strait of Hormuz faces various challenges and potential issues that can impact maritime activities in the region. It is located in a region with ongoing geopolitical tensions. Political disputes, military posturing, or conflicts involved in the surrounding countries, particularly Iran, can lead to disruptions. Piracy and maritime security issues, although not as prevalent as in some other regions, are still a concern. Security incidents can disrupt shipping activities and pose risks to vessels passing through the strait. The strait is ecologically sensitive, and any accidents like oil spills or other environmental incidents in the area could have severe consequences for marine life and the surrounding ecosystem.

Overall, the Strait of Hormuz is a critical and sensitive maritime passage that plays a vital role in global energy security, making it a focal point for international attention and strategic considerations.

𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝟬𝟭 - 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏

A chokepoint refers to the point of natural congestion along two broader and more critical navigable passages. When it comes to maritime trade, these are typically straits or canals that see high volumes of traffic because of their strategic location. The majority of the choke points are “straits” which are less vulnerable to calamities like malfunctioning locks or vessel groundings.

Chokepoints play a crucial role when considering supply management for every commodity in our developed world, especially those commodities that are difficult to transport by land or air.

Despite their convenience, these vital points pose several risks. They are:

Structural risks - As demonstrated in the recent Suez Canal blockage, ships can crash along the shore of a canal if the passage is too narrow, causing traffic jams that can last for days.

Geopolitical risks -Because of their high traffic, choke points are particularly vulnerable to blockades or deliberate disruptions during times of political unrest.

The current situation in the Red Sea is reminiscent of the events in March 2021, when the Suez Canal faced a six-day blockade due to the grounding of the container ship Ever Given.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀?
Yemen-based Houthi rebels have significantly intensified their campaign of attacks against commercial vessels in the Bab-El-Mandeb strait between the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa since late October 2023, linked to the Israel-Hamas War. As a result, major shipping companies are persistently halting shipments through the Red Sea, opting to divert them around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲?
The Suez Canal, linking the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, serves as the most direct route between Europe and Asia, managing approximately 12% of global trade which includes 30% of global container traffic. This waterway is crucial for the transportation of oil from the Persian Gulf to Europe and North America. When shipments are rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope, an additional distance of about 3,500 nautical miles (3,500 km) is incurred, prolonging the journey connecting Europe and Asia by more than a week.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱?
The global trade landscape is already being significantly affected by the ongoing situation in the Suez Canal, and industry analysts assert that the decision to reroute vessels will have a substantial impact on shipping costs. If this crisis extends, there is a potential for an increase in the prices consumers pay for imported goods. The shipping delays are anticipated to create ripple effects at container ports throughout Europe, disrupting the typically efficient handling of large container volumes.
To illustrate: If a port usually handles 50,000 containers per week and experiences a one-week absence of arrivals followed by a subsequent week with 100,000 containers arriving, congestion issues may arise.
According to a supply chain research firm, there is a concern that stores could face low stock levels by February 2024 if the delays persist. While the overall container shipping industry may be heavily affected, vessels carrying fossil fuels to Europe might experience the initial impact, potentially leading to increased energy prices.

Despite the challenges posed by the current circumstances, it is noted that the current situation differs from the previous Suez Canal blockade during the pandemic, where supply chains were notably disrupted.
