Last afternoon, I overheard one of our beneficiaries saying that he has been starving because there is no work available and food is too expensive to afford. He is a young man, perhaps in his early thirties; if he is young and healthy, what hope is there for the elderly?
While in the same Island, the Christmas celebrations and feasting have begun. I pray those who advocate for equality will think about the disparities—where is the balance and the justice for those who have no weight or voice in this man-made economic crisis? I pray those who have the power to influence those in authority will do so for the benefit of the poor.
Think about these things...

To those who gave, we are very grateful for your overflowing generosity. We have been able to collect more than enough funds for Wickramapala Uncle's need and we are closing this fund.

Thank you so very much for your overwhelming kindness.

Yesterday we found ourselves in a small hamlet in the furthest reaches of Gampola. We were visiting one of our elderly beneficiaries who had been absent at the Wednesday lunch for a few weeks. It was a rainy day and we found out he had taken ill with the wheeze. He was very glad to see us.
Generally he comes for the lunch just to speak to Shehan so that he can share his burdens with him. On any other day you can find him on Peradeniya Road selling betel and sarawita. That is how he supports his family. He has a nineteen year old son who does not have a permanent job still, but brings in a meager salary every month which he dutifully hands over to his mother. The son's hope is to find a good enough job that pays a good enough salary which will take care of his mother and father. His present salary just isn't enough to make ends meet. Due to Vikramapala Uncle's wheeze, he has not had any money to purchase their daily needs or the medicine he direly needs to get well. Between his wife and himself they cook one meal a day in this current economic climate and make do though they need more nourishment than this.
Their home, a little old house is barely standing with a leaky roof. The floors are constantly wet now with the heavy rains and because of this, the house is always cold and whatever little furniture they have ...always wet.
The Soup Bowl is able to provide for the cost of medicine on a monthly basis but they have a debt of Rs. 13,000 to pay at the grocery shop where they have been purchasing their daily needs and we would like to help them pay this debt.

If you are able to pitch in to this cost, please WhatsApp us on 0775437038 .
Thank you
Rishani

We need to realize that poverty doesn't only consist of being hungry for bread,
but rather it is a tremendous hunger for human dignity.

We need to love and to be someone for someone else.

Dear Friends of the Soup Bowl,

On behalf of The Soup Bowl, I am writing to urgently appeal for funding for our three lunch projects. As a personal charity dedicated to addressing hunger and malnutrition in our communities in and around Kandy, we are currently facing a critical funding shortfall that threatens the continuity of these essential initiatives.

Our three lunch projects have been instrumental in providing sustenance to vulnerable populations, including low-income families, homeless individuals, and at-risk children.

The three lunch projects we seek funding for are:

Hantane Sivananda Lunch Program: Our school lunch program ensures that underprivileged children who are from the surrounding lunch estates have access to wholesome meals during the academic year. We give lunch to 71 children every Monday for a total cost of Rs. 25,000 per week (Rs. 350 per lunch packet).

Community Kitchen: Our community kitchen serves as a safe haven for individuals and families who struggle to find regular meals. The community kitchen offers a warm environment where individuals can gather, share their burdens with us, and receive support from our compassionate volunteers. The people who benefit from this project include street sweepers, street cobblers, lottery seller, widows, single mothers and the elderly and disabled. The community kitchen is held every Wednesday and currently we have over 120 individuals who come on a weekly basis. The total cost per week is Rs. 38,000 and this includes a yoghurt cup or a piece of cake for dessert.

Lunch Distributions: Our lunch distribution allows us to distribute food packages to struggling families and individuals in and around Kandy. The lunch distribution happens every Saturday and we serve 70 lunch packs to low income people in Mahaiyawa, Pilimathalawa, Kandy city and Katugastota. The location of this project varies every Saturday. The total cost per week is Rs. 25,000 (Rs.350 per lunch packet).

Without immediate financial support, we are at risk of having to curtail or even suspend these crucial lunch projects. Your support will enable us to continue our mission of combating hunger, promoting health, and fostering a brighter future.

With sincere gratitude,

Rishani Sittampalam
