🟢 🇱🇰 Protect our Seagrasses !
Seagrasses are submerged flowering plants which are found rooted in shallow marine and estuarine waters, usually in areas with soft sand or mud. They generally grow in large patches (monospecific or mixed species) that are referred to as seagrass meadows. Seagrasses can be found in isolated patches and also amongst other habitats, such as corals, bivalve reefs and mangroves in shallow waters of all continents except for Antarctica. Globally, around 60 species of seagrasses have been identified, however this is under debate and can vary.
They show a high dependency for sunlight, which is why they are found in shallow waters, where sunlight penetrates to the seabed best . Seagrasses have a higher proportion of plant tissue that are not photosynthetic (for example, the rhizomes and roots found underground, rooting the seagrasses to the seabed). Therefore they need a higher level of sunlight when compared to other marine plants such as algae which are not rooted therefore have no underground components. Seagrasses require more than 10% sunlight at the water surface, whereas algae only need 1%.
