🌷Riga is a very green city with numerous parks and gardens, the oldest park being Viesturdārzs. It was created in 1711 by order of Peter the Great - the Russian Tsar - to serve as a place for his summer residence. In 1841 it was donated to the City of Riga, and since then, it has been the venue for various events - theatre performances, concerts, and in 1873, a stage was built for the 1st Latvian Song Festival.

🌷Vērmanes Garden is the second oldest and one of Riga's most magnificent parks - the numerous benches are a daily resting place for residents and visitors, and children have access to a well-equipped playground. It was created in the early 19th century with donations. The park takes its name from the most generous donor, Anna Gertrude Vērmane, who gave the park a plot of land and a substantial sum of money on the condition that it should never be divided or sold to private individuals.

🌷In Bastejkalns, the stone cairn, a river with cascades and a waterfall, was installed already more than 120 years ago, in 1898.

💰Have you heard of the window tax? Indeed, in 1696 under the reign of King William III a window tax was introduced in England and Wales. Later the tax came in force also in Scotland, France, and some other countries.

💰For many property owners the only way to avoid paying the tax was to brick up windows. Some houses even painted on windows to give the appearance of wealth without having to pay it.

💰Without proper lighting and ventilation, people were prone to diseases such as cholera, small pox and typhus. The window tax became more and more opposed by the society and doctors, as the populations’ health declined.

💰Finally, after more than 150 years the tax in England was annulled in the 19th century.

Luckily, we live in the 21st century ;)

✅ The English word “window” has its origins in the Old Norse word “vindauga”, and it literally means “wind-eye”.

✅ Windows, depicted in wall paintings of ancient Egyptians, are as old as homes. Even prehistoric peoples made holes in the hut roofs to let in air and light. Animal skins, shells and scales of large fish were used as window coverings.

✅ According to archaeological evidence, the first man-made glass surfaced in 3500 BC in the regions of Eastern Mesopotamia and Egypt - but used mostly for making vessels and jewelry.

✅ Ancient Rome was the first civilization to have glass windows. They discovered the technology of mixing sand and other materials, and heating the mixture, so it could be made into small glass panes. Those panes were of uneven thickness and were not fully see-through yet.

✅ During the early 17th century, window glass was first manufactured in Britain. But it was an expensive status symbol.

✅ In the year 1903, a French chemist named Edouard Benedictus made the accidental discovery of laminated glass when his glass flask that was coated with plastic cellulose nitrate dropped to the floor and shattered - but did not break. Since this discovery, the process of inserting a thin plastic film between two sheets of glass allowed for more safety with larger windows.

✅ It wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution in the late 19th Century that the machine-cylinder method of production made glass windows affordable for large numbers of people.

The pearl of the 19th century classicism architecture - the Latvian National Opera and Ballet - is the splendor of Riga!
✅ The building was built in 1860-1863 near the city’s canal on the grounds of the former bastion according to the project of the architect Ludwig Bohnstedt.
✅ Unfortunately, the great fire of 1882 destroyed the major part of the building. The reconstruction according to the original design was completed in five years.
✅ The north-eastern facade with six columns and various allegorical figures – symbols of Apollo, tragedy and comedy, etc. – is especially luxurious.
✅ More than 200 performances and concerts are performed each season.

Vecpilsētas Street (in translation - Old town street) is a charming street in Riga Old Town. This areaa in the 14th-16th centuries was called Alder trees bog - it is believed that at the beginning of the 13th century it was a marshy area covered with alder trees. Documents from year 1540 first mention Vecpilsētas Street as a small square where the town scales and market were located, as well as three streets that began in this square. The street is 170 metres long and is located next to Avalon Hotel & Conferences.
