The international magisterium of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller
A splendid lecture was delivered by Chev. Dr. Antoine Bonello regarding the 1st siege of Rhodes earlier this month.
The First Siege of Rhodes in 1480 was a pivotal event during the Ottoman Wars in the Mediterranean. In July 1480, an Ottoman fleet led by Sultan Mehmed II's grand vizier, Gedik Ahmed Pasha, laid siege to the island of Rhodes, which was held by the Knights Hospitaller. The Knights, led by Grand Master Pierre d'Aubusson, fortified the city and prepared for the impending assault. Despite facing overwhelming odds, the defenders managed to repel repeated attacks by the Ottoman forces.
The siege lasted for over three months, during which both sides suffered heavy casualties. However, the Knights' resilience and the arrival of reinforcements from Europe ultimately forced the Ottoman fleet to retreat in September 1480, marking a significant victory for the defenders of Rhodes. The successful defence of Rhodes bolstered the reputation of the Knights Hospitaller and demonstrated their ability to resist the expanding Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean.
On March 8th 2024 the Malta Priory proudly celebrated its 60 year anniversary of its instalment within The Order of St.John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller.
