Guest lecture on International Law and the Developing Counties: Towards Third world Approach to Teaching and Learning International Law

On 10 July 2024, Villa College Law Society, Faculty of Shariah and Law Mom's Aid NGO in collaboration with Prosecutor General’s Office successfully hosted a controlled consultation training session on Domestic Violence at Villa College for law students and representatives from Mom's Aid NGO. The primary objective of the event was to enhance Volunteers knowledge and skills in effectively reporting and addressing cases of domestic violence.
The consultation training led by PG office Public prosecutors Uz. Ahmed Faraas and Uza. Aishath Azleema covered various aspects of domestic violence, including the legal framework, reporting mechanisms, and support services available for victims. Through interactive sessions, case studies, and situation-based exercises, participants gained practical experience and a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in handling domestic violence cases. The event also emphasized the importance of collaboration between law students, NGOs, and legal professionals in creating a supportive network for victims.
Overall, the consultation training was well-received, with positive feedback from participants who appreciated the comprehensive coverage of the topic and the practical insights provided. The event successfully raised awareness about domestic violence and equipped attendees with the necessary tools to make a positive impact in their respective roles.

We are proud to have our students from the Faculty of Shariah and Law (FSL) to have participated in the Vis Moot nine months long programme. The team consisted of Hoona Haneef (LLB), Malsaa Ahmed (LLB), Mariyam Lana (LLB), and Yakta Ahmed (BSL). The team was coached by the expert guidance of our last year’s Vis Alumni’s Athfa Afeef (LLB) and Maahy Shafeeu (LLB) under the mentorship of MTAC (Mooting, trial Advocacy and Arbitration Club) faculty in charge Mr. Amish Abdullah.

DUBAI: The MENA Vis Moot Winter Bootcamp which the team attended where they received in-depth preparatory training for the second phase of the Vis Moot, focusing on the required knowledge and skills to draft the Memorandum for the Respondent.

ABU DHABI: The 14th Annual MENA Vis Pre-Moot consisted of two phases; a two-day training phase and a three-day mock arbitration.

CAIRO: The AlexU-CRCICA Vis Pre-Moot V, where they secured a spot in the quarterfinals, with Ms. Malsaa Ahmed (LLB) earning the 3rd place for the best pleader award on behalf of the claimants.

HONG KONG: 21st Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot, where 144 international teams from around the globe competed.

Some of the previous achievements of our last year teams include Finalists for the 13th Middle East (MENA) Pre-Moot held in Abu Dhabi, UAE; 16th Finalists for the best oral team 20th Willem C Vis East Moot held in Hong Kong and where Athfa Afeef received an honourable mention.

Villa College, Faculty of Shariah and Law in collaboration with the University of the West of England, Bristols organised an interactive expert lecture on 'Psychiatric Injury under Torts' as a part of their flagship Law Lecture series. The Facilitators for the special lecture were Ms. Shilan Shah Davis, Director (Academic) Faculty of Business and Law, UWE, Bristol, UK and Mr. Amish Abdullah, Lecturer, Villa College, Faculty of Shariah and Law. The expert's lecture was open to all our Graduate, Post Graduation students and our alumni base. Students from LLB, BSL, MSL, LLM and alumni attended the lecture leaving remarkable feedback and asking for more sessions like the one conducted.

We are pleased to share that reflecting on the SDGs 17 with our MoU partner Symbiosis International University ( .official ) bringing American International University Bangladesh Institute of Legal Studies ( ) , SRM University () and Jus Corpus Law Journal together, our FSL staff have contributed as key note speaker and technical session chair for the International Conference titled Women Rights in Emerging Societies held on 17th February 2024.

Key note address titled "Women Rights in the Emerging Societies: The Maldivian Tides" reflected upon the status quo of women's participation in the Maldives Vis-a Vis their rights tracing it to the evolutionary pattern with the SDGs by Uza Asna Ahmed.

A case study of Villa College was also presented at the conference about how the institute works on curving gender disparity reflecting on the gender ratio of students, Graduates, and staff at the Villa College by Uza Asna Ahmed and Amish Abdullah paving ways for further collaborations.

Evening Legal-Aid Clinic for Migrant Workers:
FSl, Villa College with Transparency Maldives co-organised an evening legal aid camp at the artificial beach from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on 28 December 2023.

The camp focused on spreading legal awareness among the migrants about their rights and to provide legal advice to the Migrant workers for issues they face while interacting with the system and society.

The legal aid was provided by the FSL academics Uza. Asna Ahmed, Advocate Amish Abdullah, Uz. Shahim Saleem and practicing lawyer of Transparency Maldives Uza. Alsan Sadiq with the Villa College Law Society Students paving the way for students to learn as observers.
