How does your employer connect with the community? Last month, the university's community outreach committee invited me to a literary festival to present with colleagues from the Education Enhancement Department. It allowed me to demonstrate how capoeira can support active reading strategies for parents and students.

When DEIA Hate Is Good 10/03/2024

I like to leave work in the office on Friday, but sometimes it follows me home on the weekends. Does that ever happen to you?

"I hit the driveway after a long run, and my phone lit up. Two colleagues messaged me about an email sent to all university faculty. An attendee of the diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) workshop I led the previous day manipulated my words."

DEIA Beginnings 04/03/2024

How do you manage emotions before speaking in public? Solutions lie in your awareness of what's happening inside.

"A mixture of nerves and enthusiasm filled my body. Moments before any presentation it’s the same thing. I'm excited about the topic, concerned about the reception, and eager to begin."

Writing Process 19/02/2024

How is writing a blog post, article, or book different from a conference abstract? One possible answer is length. Are there more differences?

Join me in one hour on Zoom for an interactive workshop on conference abstract writing. See Friday's blog post or the preview for details:

Writing Process How did your Super Bowl Sunday turn out? Were you happy with the results? Did you lose any money? I should've bet on the Chiefs and altered my stance on gambling. How far would you go to excite your students about a topic?

"In the final strides of Saturday’s run, I found ideas for Monday’s lecture on active reading strategies. I decided to start the presentation with something dynamic.

Capturing students' attention spans is critical to impactful teaching.

I jumped rope, backflipped, and did capoeira movements to grab students' attention and introduce how reading can lead to skill development."

Calling Courage to Christmas Cheers 28/12/2023

How are the holidays treating you? Are you making time for family and progress on your goals? Today, we recognize Kujichagulia, self-determination.

One more question...

"How frequently do you put yourself in a position to test your courage? I’m not only referencing physical actions like leading a protest against injustice or intervening in an altercation between Santa and the elves.

It's okay if you still believe in Santa Claus. Just don't tell anyone. Smile.

Courage comes in many forms.

Restarting after multiple failures is an act of courage. This applies to revising a policy after poor reception from the board and employees. It's rewriting an article after receiving rejections from three top-tier journals. Choosing marriage again after divorce is also courageous.

Why start this week's blog post with a discussion of courage?"

"I took two glances at the WhatsApp message. "Did I read that correctly?" I asked myself.

“Save the Date: October 11-14, Sandals Foundation Island Run Antigua 2023 Ultramarathon 100 KM, Half Marathon 26KM, Walk Option to Come,” I reread the colorful caption under the vibrant picture with the Antiguan flag background.

Someone sent me an advertisement for a local event that promised a rare running adventure. Although excited about the chance to cross Antigua on my feet, self-doubt made me hesitate to register. "

Stay Ready 09/09/2023

"In the book, Exercised: Why Something We Never Evolved to Do is Healthy and Rewarding by Daniel Lieberman, he suggests that humans evolved to do as little as possible. Movement was only deemed necessary for our ancestors when they needed to hunt, reproduce, or fight to survive. Due to the many advances in technology, many of us only exercise when there is peer pressure, or we receive an alarming diagnosis from our doctor. "

Your Pain 12/08/2023

"When was the last time you experienced pain? We know pain can surface in physical and emotional forms. Perhaps, you are going through a difficult moment now.

In the States, you have brawls in Alabama and fires in Hawaii. Both incidents incite pain among individuals and communities.

According to current research, reports of neck pain are on the increase. We have our addiction to the screens of our cellphones and computers to blame for posture compromises. Inactive lifestyles also contribute to spine-related injuries."

Chicago Views and Abroad Perspectives 22/07/2023

"If I asked you about your birthplace, how would you describe it to me? Does your city, town, village, or neighborhood have a reputation?

Chicago is famous for blues music, stuffed pizza, professional sports franchises, cold, windy winters, warm violent summers, and more. Legendary musicians Buddy Guy and Muddy Waters played in Chicago. Giordano's perfected the pizza slice in Chicago. Michael Jordan put the Chicago Bulls on the basketball map. The unpredictable climate makes the city special for different reasons.

Seven years ago, my family moved away from Chicago. We spent two years in Mexico and then relocated to Antigua. Last week, I returned to my hometown with my daughter to reconnect with family and friends.

Much has changed in Chicago."

"When do you travel? Do you pack bags to fulfill work obligations, visit family, or change scenery? It could be all of the above.

With the cost of flying, I'm sure you hesitate to book a flight just because it's Friday. Tuesdays used to be the best days to find a flight deal. Nowadays, I don't believe it matters when you purchase airfare.

Time with my daughter, a phone upgrade, computer repairs, the Portland marathon, and a childhood friend's birthday party sent me to the States. Yes, it took all of that to leave Antigua. I wanted to bring the entire family, but the expenses proved too much.

I departed on July 2 for a trip that left me stranded at home."
