Teenager Peter Laake collapsed face-first on the lacrosse field, unresponsive and without a pulse. A fast-moving ball had just struck him in the chest, causing commotio cordis, a rare phenomenon where a hard hit to the chest at a very specific time in the cardiac cycle can stop the heart. It's what may have happened to Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills during a recent NFL game.

The team doctor started CPR immediately. Another doctor, two ICU nurses and a local fire chief came down from the stands to offer help. Athletic trainers retrieved the AED on the sidelines and administered a shock to Peter's chest. After a few more chest compressions, Peter had a faint pulse. Then he sat up.

Textbook response to cardiac arrest saved Peter's life. He was back on the lacrosse field in three weeks.
