La cirugía báriatrica es una desicion muy personal, pero definitivamente no es la salida fácil, tampoco es una barita mágica y todo se solucionara para siempre. Considero que es un trampolín para mejorar hábitos saludables y mejorar tu salud.

Are you feeling nervous about eating this Christmas?🎄

These feelings are totally normal as you will likely lay your eyes on more food than you know what to do with…

So here are some tips to keep in mind, this Holiday…

❄️ Start with a small side plate⁠ 🍽

⁠❄️ Prioritise protein & fill half your small plate with Christmas ham, turkey, roast, or seafood ⁠🦃

⁠❄️ Next, fill 1/3 of your plate with non-starchy vegetables like green beans, Brussels Sprouts or salads on offer 🥗

❄️ Add 1 tablespoon of complex, high-fibre carbohydrates such as potatoes, corn, brown rice salad, and wholegrain bread 🥔

⁠❄️ Top with 1 teaspoon of healthy fats such as avocado, cranberry sauce, low-fat aioli⁠ 🥑

❄️ Remember to eat slowly and chew well and stop when you are satisfied!

⁠Above all, enjoy these foods as Christmas only comes around once a year! 🎅🏼

That tiny universe inside your gut called the microbiome has more control than we know over our physical and mental health. However, digestive health nutrition for bariatric surgery is often muffled by the noise of weight loss, protein intake and vitamins.💊

Nourish it well with these 5 tips📝

✨ Fiber every meal - Never feel full but hitting your protein goal? Prebiotic fiber feeds good bacteria in the gut and keeps you fuller longer. Fiber is the ultimate “detoxifier” as it binds toxins to stool and keeps you regular💩 Aim for ~25 grams daily.

✨ Add ferments - Fermented food contains good bacteria “probiotics” that are associated with better digestion, stronger immunity and even increased weight loss. Sip on miso soup between meals, replace meat protein with tempeh, have Greek yogurt or kefir at breakfast or mix kimchi or sauerkraut with your favorite protein!

✨ Limit artificial sweeteners - sugar alcohols can cause uncomfortable gas and bloating and some types of artificial sweeteners can lead to changes in gut bacteria. Make ½ of fluid intake plain ol’ H2O 💦

✨ Stress management - Break the nervous stomach cycle by finding ways to destress. Try guided meditation, exercising, brewing tea, reading, listening to a podcast, calling a loved one, petting a furry friend or sitting in the sunshine to rest and digest.

Now that we are getting into the holiday season, social events of all kinds are starting to come up!🎉🥳 there always seems to be a reason to celebrate this time of year. For those who have gone through weight loss surgery, it may be a time of stress while trying to navigate social events centered around food. Below are a few tips to help guide you through the holiday season after having bariatric surgery🏥:

📌Be prepared. Be mentally prepared that there may be some emotions that come up and you need to take the time to think through how to process those and handle them around food triggers.
📌Don’t skip meals to save calories. Make sure you still eat a high protein breakfast and a couple of high protein snacks if needed leading up to the event. Most often skipping meals backfires and you end up over-eating later in the day.
📌Bring your own food if needed. Carry protein bars, beef jerky, or protein shakes depending on where you are after surgery.
📌Choose protein first. Identify the protein-heavy dishes available and fill up on those before other items.
📌Fill up on vegetables second. Most times there are vegetable trays and vegetable side dishes that accompany the main dish. Make sure to eat protein first, then vegetables second.
📌Stay hydrated. Dehydration can lead to even more cravings around delicious holiday food. Make sure that you go into each event well-hydrated by planning a few days in advance. At the actual event, choose sugar-free, caffeine-free drinks to help stay on track.
📌Go easy on the alcohol. First off, alcoholic drinks are empty calories and do not provide good nutrition. You may also find that it’s easier to give in to your favorite treats if you’ve had a couple of drinks.
📌Ask for support from family and friends. Bariatric surgery is a physical and emotional process where support from others is critical. Have a friend or family member be there during social gatherings to help keep you on track and accountable to your goals.
📌Don’t completely deprive yourself. Depending on where you are post-op, you may be able to enjoy a bite or two of your favorite foods. Be smart and know your portions!

📌Give yourself grace. If you overindulged and are feeling guilty for the food choices you made, don’t beat yourself up. That doesn’t mean that you have fallen completely off the wagon and are doomed to gain weight back. Allow yourself forgiveness and recommit to healthier eating choices and exercise that nourishes your soul.💪

One of the biggest mistakes I see WLS patients making is not following a schedule!⁣🖊

If you’re struggling to meet your goals creating a schedule is a great place to start!⁣🧐

These times are not universal and it’s important to find what works for you, this is just an example.

✅Bring a dish you know you’ll be able to eat.⁣
✅Focus on all of the other traditions and memories aside from just the food. ⁣

Diabetes is every day,
24 hours a day.

Diabetes is there during activities, in the middle of the night, in the early morning. It is always there.

As usual, we remind you on this day to please be aware of the signs, symptoms, and actions you need to take if you know someone who is might have diabetes.

Also, please know that diabetes is a manageable most of the time. However, it is about more than only insulin or other medication. You also need sufficient diabetes education, services, and support to reach the lifestyle you need to successfully manage your blood glucose levels and live with peace of mind.

It is important to remember that there are still too many losing their battle with this condition because they can’t find the supplies or support they need.🏥

Caffeine fluids can be as good as any other fluids to keep you hydrated. But, coffee can be a “below the radar” culprit for side effects like heart burn in the first few weeks after bariatric surgery.🫢☕️

It is a good idea to avoid caffeine for the first month after surgery while your stomach is extra sensitive.📝
To avoid head-pounding withdrawal symptoms, try switching to half-caff before surgery.
Warm up your morning routine with some of these caffeine-free alternatives!🫡☀️

Obese patients with a BMI higher than 3️5️, may be candidates for bariatric surgery if they suffer from serious medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, or sleep apnea.🩺🧬

There is no age limit when it comes to determine your eligibility for weight loss surgery. Teenagers may also be candidates for bariatric surgery if they have a BMI of 3️5️ or higher. In these cases, adulthood is not worth the wait.🍏💪🏻🤍
