“Data centre operators are looking at locations outside Singapore. And it might not be a bad thing.

According to a report on Nikkei Asia, the limited capacity post-moratorium has caused data centre operators to look elsewhere for growth.

This comes amid an impending space crunch, with Cushman & Wakefield pe***ng the DC vacancy rate in Singapore at a low of 2%.

And while Singtel did announce its 68MW DC Tuas earlier this month (https://lnkd.in/gvq83ZiT), new DCs takes up to two years to build.

👀 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲

According to the Nikkei Asia report:

• Princeton Digital Group (PDG) is looking to offer more capacity in Malaysia (Johor) and Indonesia (Batam).
• EdgeConneX is looking to expand in Indonesia and the Philippines.
• US-based Vantage Data Centers is bypassing Singapore for its regional expansion.

I'll also note that:

• Equinix is building a DC in Johor.
• Even Singtel is looking at Malaysia and entered into a strategic partnership to build DCs in Indonesia.

🥅 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀

Is Singapore losing its lustre? Some I spoke with think so.

But in the words of PDG's Rangu Salgame, Singapore is aware of the importance of the DC market, "but still has to meet its commitments and obligations on the global stage".

That is exactly it.

• Fully 7% of the power in Singapore is used by DCs, among the highest, if not the highest in the world.
• Building new, hyperscale DCs at the usual pace could well double it within 3-4 years.
• Clearly not sustainable, even if you ignore sustainability considerations.

🎯 If we can't have the DCs, can we make it matter less? What if Singapore were to move the goalposts and instead leverage its stronger connectivity?

We see part of this plan happening when the Singapore government announced the upgrading of its broadband infrastructure (NBN) to better support 10Gig, as well as plans to double its landing stations.

For now, it is worth noting that Singapore is still ahead in terms of total capacity, though the lead will disappear within the next few years.”
