BRAINetwork recently creating this learning material with and for the indigenous Jahai community of Peninsular Malaysia. Today also marks the 15th anniversary of the United Nation's
'International Mother Language Day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The date represents the day in 1952 when students demonstrating for recognition of their language, Bangla, as one of the two national languages of the then Pakistan, were shot and killed by police in Dhaka, the capital of what is now Bangladesh.
Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue'

Credit to the hardworking students pictured below who are currently working on BRAINetwork's Curriculum-in-a-box. The Curriculum-in-a-box, which we previously and successfully implemented in an Orang Asal community, will this time used to assist a local community affected by the recent flooding. We hope this will prove an effective way to provide some form of rehabilitation to communities in disaster areas, such as those suffered across the east coast of Malaysia as a result of the recent flooding.

Here's a blog detailing Phase Two of our inaugural TUT-USM Summer School programme. Phase two was the data collection phase of the programme, which took place in the Belum-Temenggor Forest Reserve. Sorry for the delay getting this online, we hope that it brings back some fond memories to all those involved in the progamme. The phase 3 blog will be uploaded in a few days.

First Mile Project: Four day visit to Kampung Chuweh
The First Mile Project - Services for Survival: Training of proactive wilderness first responders in Kampung Chuweh in the Belum-Temenngor Rainforest from the 19th-21st October 2014
Here's the video for Phase 3 of our TUT-USM Summer School which took place in TUT Penang. It began with the students analyzing the data that they collected using the Community Sustainability Assessment tool in 10 indigenous villages in the Belum-Temenggor Forest Reserve in the previous phase of the program.
In Phase 3, the students identified the community's needs and prepared proposals for various projects which would address the needs of the Orang Asal communities. The TUT students used their engineering backgrounds to try develop projects using technology which could create sustainable solutions to empower the Orang Asal to have better ways of dealing with the challenges that daily life in the rainforest presents (more about their projects in a future blog).
Phase 3 finished with a student forum and a closing ceremony which was attended by Prof. Dr. Mitsuteru Inoue, Executive Trustee, Vice President, Education Affairs of Toyohashi University of Technology and Prof Dato' Dr. Ahmad Shukri Mustapa Kamal, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic & International Affairs, of Universiti Sains Malaysia.
On behalf of BRAINetwork, we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who participated in our inaugural Summer School program, making it such an enjoyable and memorable experience.
Here's a short clip showcasing Phase 2 of our summer school program which took place in the Belum-Temenggor Forest Reserve.
The song playing over the pictures was chosen for it’s fitting lyrics, “together we stand strong, our hands can change the world” and “together we are strong, our minds can change the world”. This reflects USM, TUT and the Orang Asal coming together, combining their knowledge and expertise to create sustainable solutions together. The song also has a second important message, that is, although we differ, in our culture, tradition, lifestyle and backgrounds, at a biological level, “we are all the same”, we are all human beings, which is important to remember and recognize considering the constant stigmatization and racism that the Orang Asal experience in society today.
TUT-USM Summer School 2014 Phase 2 Toyohashi University of Technology and Universiti Sains Malaysia's Summer School Program 2014 Phase 2
Yesterday a team of TUT-USM Summer School students returned to the rainforest to plant the Merbau trees, that they selected with their Japanese partners from TUT just over two weeks ago. The students travelled by boat to plant the Merbau trees, which we hope, will symbolize the blossoming relationship between TUT and USM, and our summer school program together. While there, we also discussed some future plans with the head of the village and enjoyed playing some games with Chuweh’s children.

Phase 3 of the Programme takes place at the TUT-Penang Campus in Cantonment Road. Phase 3 is a student-directed, project-based component which facilitated by graduate students of both USM and TUT.
Faculty members of TUT and BRAINetwork USM will act as advisors for this component of the programme.
Phase 2 of the programme takes part in the Belum-Temenggor Rainforest Complex at Pulau Banding, Grik, Perak. The students introduced to the BRAINetwork Ecovillage at RPS Air Banun which is part of the First Mile Project funded by the USM RUC grant, Mattel Children’s Foundation and Dana Inovasi USM. The First Mile project has five components and the TUT students exposed to these components and hopefully structure their project
proposals around these issues.
Students undergo a curriculum that involves:
1. Understanding the ethical, legal and social implications of research with indigenous communities.
2. Carrying out a needs assessment and sustainability evaluation of the communities via the Community Sustainability Assessment [CSA] tool in three areas:
a. Ecological sustainability
b. Social sustainability
c. Spiritual sustainability
3. Conducting the CSA in pairs, consisting of a USM graduate student, a TUT graduate student.
Presentation Day in TUT-USM Penang
Rahim and Naoki have spent the past two weeks working on a project to introduce new/improved technology to the Orang Asal (indigenous people of Malaysia). Here they are presenting their innovative idea of a Rotatable Bamboo Solar Panel System which will increase the efficiency of solar panels to provide extra energy within the indigenous communities of Belum-Temenggor Rainforest
