Girlscode Mobile App Challenge 2023 Closing and Award Ceremony Join us to celebrate the successes of the 12 teams that come from Penang, Johor, Kuching, Sarikei, Sri Aman and Kuching. They had gone through 13 weeks of problem-solving and app development before they arrived in Miri for the final presentation and the award ceremony today. The birth of ChampSPEAK!

Champs was started by my family when I was in my final semester of my university. Hence when I finished, I came back to Miri to start working with teens here. I was inspired by Arts-Ed and the work they were doing with the students in Georgetown Penang. More importantly, I was blown away by how critical, observant and articulate the teens were thanks to the programs from Arts-Ed!
University for me was a mismatch of expectations! Where I had expected a fertile ground for academic discourse where students challenge well established ideas and have intellectual skirmished with their lecturers, in reality, the lecture halls filled with hundreds of docile and mute young Malaysian who just will not respond to, ‘Any questions?’
This must be changed! So I embarked on a project to impart ‘debating’ skills on teenagers! ChampSPEAK Teens was born. Soon after, to meet the needs and interest of upper primary children, ChampSPEAK Junior was created. After that we dabbled into a class for children as young as primary 1 called ChampSPEAK Mini!
