USM RECEIVES VISIT FROM EACEA, DISCUSSES PARTNERSHIP AND COLLABORATION

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) today welcomed a visit from Dr. Roger Y. Chao Jr. of the Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). The purpose of the visit was to monitor the progress of four research projects at USM: MICROCASA, CIRCULAR, GeoDRR, and CALOHEA.

The meeting was chaired by USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Professor Dr. Habibah A. Wahab.

Professor Dr. Habibah emphasised USM's commitment to advancing science, technology, and sustainability. She also highlighted the university's enthusiasm for engaging with industry experts to foster future research initiatives.

Among the topics discussed during the meeting included the Erasmus+ and collaboration on micro-credentials programs, such as a potential nursing project with USM's School of Health Sciences.

Present at the event was USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic and International, Professor Dato’ Gs. Dr. Narimah Samat, who is also the project leader of GeoDRR, presented on academic matters related to micro-credentials and credit transfer.

Also in attendance were the USM Director of the Research Creativity and Management Office (RCMO), Professor Dr. Zainovia Lockman; Director of the Centre for Development of Academic Excellence (CDAE) and project leader for CALOHEA, Associate Professor Dr. Muhamad Saiful Bahri Yusoff; project leader for CIRCULAR, Associate Professor Dr. Asyirah Abdur Rahim; and project leader for MICROCASA, Dr. Radziah Adam.

Yunnan Minzu University Delegation Visits USM to Discuss Future Collaborations

PENANG, 27th May : USM recently welcomed a delegation from Yunnan Minzu University (YMU) , led by Professor Ruan Chaoqi, Secretary of CPC Yunnan Minzu University(YMU) Committee. The objective of the visit was to explore potential collaborations between the two institutions, particularly in academic and research collaboration. The MOU between USM and YMU, which will remain in effect until 2026, has already facilitated several successful initiatives. One notable program is the student mobility exchange in ProperBM program with the School of Humanities, which currently has 10 YMU students participating.
The discussions during this visit focused on expanding these collaborations to include other schools and departments within both universities, with a particular emphasis on fostering academic partnerships. Both parties expressed enthusiasm for the future possibilities and are committed to strengthening the ties between their institutions.

BUILDING BRIDGE : USM AND TASHKENT INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION, UZBEKISTAN FORGE PARTNERSHIP FOR IT AND EDUCATIONAL STUDIES PROGRAM

March 14, Penang : In a bid to enhance academic offerings and foster international partnerships, USM recently held a virtual meeting with representatives from Tashkent International University of Education, Uzbekistan (TIUE). The meeting centered on collaborative efforts in offering academic programs in Information Technology (IT) and Educational Studies fields.

The collaboration aims to leverage the expertise of both institutions to develop comprehensive curricula that meet global standards and address emerging challenges in these critical sectors. Through this partnership, students from both universities can expect to benefit from a rich and diverse learning experience, gaining insights from international perspectives.

By partnering with TIUE, the university seeks to create valuable opportunities for students and faculty, enhancing academic exchange and research collaboration between the two institutions.

Both universities expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting the potential for mutual growth and the advancement of education in their respective countries. Plans are underway to finalize the details of the collaboration and launch the new programs in the near future.

USM-TSU, RUSSIA RENEW COLLABORATION, PAVING WAY FOR GLOBAL ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

USM PENANG, 9 February 2024 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) today has taken steps to strengthen its ties with Tomsk State University (TSU), Russia through the renewal signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

This renewal marks a continuation of the partnership that was initially established in 2015 and has played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration and advancing academic endeavors.

The renewed MoU outlines various areas of cooperation between the two institutions, encompassing:

• exchange of students and/or staff;
• joint academic programmes included present majors and prospective future fields of study;
• joint research and development programmes;
• joint workshops and training programmes;
• exchange of publication; and
• any other academic linkages and cooperation that will be mutually identified and agreed by the parties from time to time.

The MoU was signed through a virtual ceremony conducted using the Ktalk video conferencing platform here this afternoon.

Signing on behalf of USM was its Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Professor Gs. Dr. Narimah Samat, representing the USM Vice-Chancellor while TSU was represented by its Vice-Rector for International Affairs, Professor Artyom Yu. Rykun.

In her remarks, Narimah Samat expressed gratitude to all involved in the renewal process and conveyed her sincere optimism for the promising future ahead for both universities.

She provided a brief overview of USM's profile, background, and achievements, emphasising USM commitment to excellence in education and research.

"Today, as we embark on this journey to renew our partnership, we reaffirm our commitment to excellence in education, research, and mutual cooperation.

“As we move forward, let us embrace this opportunity to further strengthen our bond and explore new avenues for collaboration,” she said.

“Together, we have the power to inspire, innovate, and make a lasting impact on the academic landscape,” she added.

Meanwhile, Artyom Yu. Rykun in his speech highlighted the diverse opportunities for collaboration, ranging from linguistics and modern languages to physics, computer science, biomedical research, and cultural studies.

He expressed optimism for the fruitful outcomes of the collaboration and believed that the MoU would bring significant benefits to both institutions.

This collaborative effort is poised to contribute significantly to the global academic community, fostering innovation and knowledge exchange between Malaysia and Russia.

Also present were the TSU Head of Academic Affairs Division, Maria Ignatieva; TSU Deputy Head of International Division, Ekaterina Trifonova; USM Coordinator, International Strategic, Division of Academic and International, Professor Dr. Hazizan Md. Hanshan Normal University, China Delegation Visits USM to Explore Collaboration Opportunities

January 10, 2024, Penang: USM had the privilege of hosting a distinguished delegation from Hanshan Normal University (HSNU), China. The visit, facilitated by Professor Zhang Huiying, Head of the Research Office at HSNU, aimed to explore potential collaboration opportunities between the two institutions.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International) , Prof. Dato’ Gs.Dr. Narimah Samat warmly welcomed the delegation, underscoring the significance of international partnerships in fostering academic excellence and innovation. The visit was marked by fruitful discussions and exchanges, focusing on four key areas:
a) Establishment of Scientific Research Cooperation: Both universities expressed a mutual interest in establishing scientific research cooperation, with a focus on addressing pressing global challenges and advancing knowledge in various fields.

b) Initiation of Academic & Scientific Research Exchange: The HSNU delegation and USM representatives discussed the initiation of academic and scientific research exchange programs, aimed at facilitating the exchange of ideas, expertise, and resources between faculty members and researchers.

c) Consultations and Discussions on Specific Research Fields: The visit provided an opportunity for consultations and discussions on specific research fields of mutual interest. Both institutions identified areas of common expertise and explored opportunities for collaborative research projects.

d) Strengthening Scientific and Technological Cooperation: Recognizing the importance of scientific and technological cooperation in driving innovation and societal development, the HSNU delegation and USM representatives explored ways to strengthen cooperation in this crucial area.
The visit underscored the commitment of both HSNU and USM to fostering international collaboration and advancing scientific research for the benefit of society. University of Tasmania, Australia Delegation Visits USM for Potential Collaboration on Sustainability Program

January 17, 2024, Penang : USM had the honor of hosting a delegation from University of Tasmania, Professor Kate Darian Smith, Pro Vice Chancellor, College of Arts, Law and Education College Office. University of Tasmania ranked number one in the world on climate action impact ranking according to THER 2022.The visit, aimed at exploring potential collaborations on sustainability and climate change program, brought together esteemed representatives from both institutions.
Chaired by Professor Azlan Amran, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Industrial Network, Community and Institutional Sustainability) who represented USM Top Management warmly welcomed the Tasmania University delegation. Among the USM members present were representatives from various school’s deans, including the School of Humanities, School of the Arts, School of Social Sciences, School of Distance Education, School of Educational Studies, Centre for Global Sustainability Studies. Also attending the visit was Prof. Hazizan Md. Akil, the International Strategic Coordinator, Division of Academic & International.
In addition to exploring collaboration opportunities, USM showcased its existing academic programs related to sustainability, including the Master in Sustainable Development Practice (MSDP), MSc (Sustainable Cities and Communites), elective sustainability course WSU 101 (Sustainability: Issues, Challenges and Prospects) and minor courses in sustainability for undergraduate students. These programs underscore USM's commitment to fostering knowledge and expertise in sustainability across various academic disciplines.
The focus of discussions centered around potential collaborations on sustainability and climate change programs. Both universities engaged in fruitful dialogue, exchanging ideas and exploring avenues for joint initiatives aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

USM Delegates Visit to Songkhla Rajabath University in Thailand

January 26, Songkhla, Thailand : USM delegation led by Professor Dato’ Gs. Dr. Narimah Samat, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & International) recently embarked on a fruitful visit to Songkhla Rajabath University (SKRU) in Songkhla Province, South Thailand. The visit aimed to strengthen ties and explore collaborative opportunities between the two esteemed institutions which has been started since 2018.
The delegation was warmly welcomed by the Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tusana Sirichote, Rector of Songkhla Rajabath University, marking the beginning of a promising dialogue. During the visit, discussions revolved around potential collaborations, focusing on three key areas:
a) Credit Transfer Program for Student Exchange: Both universities explored the possibility of establishing a credit transfer program to facilitate student exchange programs, fostering cross-cultural experiences and academic growth.

b) Research Collaboration on Edutourism in Penang: Delving into the realm of research, discussions centered on potential collaborations in the field of edutourism, particularly focusing on Penang. This initiative aims to leverage the rich cultural heritage and educational opportunities in the region.
c) Dual Degree Programs for Language or Communication: Exploring opportunities for academic enrichment, discussions also centered on the establishment of dual degree programs in language or communication fields, providing students with a comprehensive and globally relevant educational experience.
As both universities look forward to further collaboration, the visit served as a testament to the enduring bond USM and SKRU, laying the groundwork for a future of shared achievements and mutual growth.

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Signed Between USM and ATU, Iraq

January 15 : USM and Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University (ATU), Iraq officially cemented their commitment to academic collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on January 15, 2024. The MOU, signed by Prof. Gs.Dr. Narimah Samat, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International), representing the Vice-Chancellor of USM, and Prof.Dr. Mudhaffar S. Al-Zuhairy, the president of ATU, outlines key areas of collaboration that aim to strengthen the academic ties between the two institutions. The key provisions of the MOU includes the Exchange of University Staff, Support for Scientific Projects, Exchange of Postgraduate Supervisors, Specialized Training Courses for Employees and the Cooperation in Quality Assurance and Academic Accreditation. The signing ceremony took place with great enthusiasm, emphasizing the commitment of both institutions to promoting academic excellence and fostering international collaboration. The MOU signing marks the beginning of a collaborative journey between USM and ATU, opening avenues for joint research initiatives, academic exchanges, and the mutual advancement of scientific knowledge.
