When you’re interviewing for a job, it’s not always just about what you say, but what you do or don’t.

Hiring managers pay attention to your verbal answers, but they’re also looking at how you deliver them.

Do you look them in the eye?

Do you fidget, play with your pen or fold your arms across your chest?

All of these nonverbal cues end up being a part of the overall impression you make.

Most interviewers decide whether they will consider hiring a candidate before the candidate even has a chance to answer multiple questions, and study has shown that more than half of employers know within the first five minutes of an interview if a candidate is a good fit for a position.

Your body language can have a significant impact on how you’re perceived, and so you have to be aware of it from the moment you step through the door.

Here are 5 Simple Body Language Tips for Your Next Job Interview

1) Sit up straight and lean slightly forward in your chair. In addition to projecting interest and engagement in the interaction, aligning your body’s position to that of the interviewer’s shows admiration and agreement.

2) Show your palms. When your palms are up, it signals honesty and engagement. The limbic brain picks up the positivity, which will make the interviewer comfortable.

3) Use hand gestures while speaking. When you’re really nervous, you tend to want to hide your hands because they express your anxiety. Keeping your hands hidden can be misinterpreted as distrustful behaviour.

4) Work on your walk. Interviews often make a judgement within the 10 seconds of meeting you. How you walk into the room is a part of that judgement. With shoulders pulled back, walk directly toward the person you are meeting with every body part pointing in his/her direction, maintaining eye contact with an occasional break to the side.

5) Nod your head while listening. Aside from keeping eye and face contact, nodding your head while listening is an additional way to show attentiveness.
