Today, we're crushing on this Kenyan Firm that turns Rubber Sandals Into Artworks

Ocean Sole, a social firm whose sole purpose is to clean beaches and provide to people in low-class communities, has created a workshop for a group of artisans to turn disposed flip-flops into amazing artworks.

Flip-flops are a type of footwear, known to be comfortable and casually worn. They also account for a larger percentage of waste that ends up in the ocean and the sea. According to research, an estimated 3 billion flip flops, find their way into the ocean every year.

This workshop which is located in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, was officially launched in 1999 and has since imparted to over a thousand Kenyans, and provided a steady source of income for up to 100 people, through the collection of flip flops, and making them into artworks, which are sold to zoos, aquariums museums and gift shops all over the world.

The firm uses its social enterprise to pay bonuses to employees and invest in a welfare programme that helps facilitate payments for educating their children and living a better life. It is also planning to export the idea to other countries that are experiencing the same flip-flop problem, which will be creating jobs and help save the planet.

The authorities in Mali have begun a crackdown on ho**ah smoking after giving a grace period to sh**ha bars to adjust to a ban.

The country's anti-drug agency says it has carried out dozens of arrests in the capital Bamako and seized water pipes after the six-month moratorium expired.

Bars where small groups of smokers -- primarily young men -- hang out to chat and puff on ho**ahs have flourished in Bamako in recent years.

But their days became numbered when the junta-dominated government on August 15 announced a surprise ban.

It warned that sh**ha smokers would be liable to a prison term of one to 10 days and a fine of 300 to 10,000 CFA francs ($0.45 to $15).

The Central Narcotics Office (OCS) in a Facebook posting said there had been "vigorous" raids by its agents in Bamako on Tuesday night, culminating in "about 50 individuals in prison and a large amount of seized material."

"The grace period given by the authorities for importers, distributors, sellers and consumers of sh**ha in Mali is over," the OCS said.

The ban has divided opinion in Mali.

The country is overwhelmingly Muslim, and interpretations of Islam are generally unfavourable to ci******es and to sh**ha.

But it is also a secular nation that tolerates alcohol, even if consumption is limited to certain public places and most shops and restaurants do not serve it.

Sh**has, or ho**ahs, typically burn to***co flavoured with fruit to provide a sweetened taste. The smoke is inhaled in through a long rubber tube, passing through water to cool it down. "Sh**ha" is also the term sometimes used for the to***co products.

Nigeria’s shambolic healthcare delivery system is under renewed attack from several fronts.

Apart from frequent outbreaks of diseases, dependence on imported medicines and the exodus of medical professionals, the influx of fake and substandard drugs has become a deluge, causing illnesses, disabilities and deaths in Nigeria and other West African countries.

The government needs to urgently reinvigorate its strategy to protect the people from the scourge of counterfeit drugs.

A new report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime underscores the consequences of the influx.

It said substandard drugs kill 500,000 persons in sub-Saharan Africa each year. As many as 267,000 deaths per year, it said, are linked to falsified and substandard anti-malarial medicines, the transnational organised crime threat assessment found.

In addition, up to 169,271 deaths are linked to falsified and substandard antibiotics used to treat severe pneumonia in children. Recent alerts from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control warn of adulterated cough syrups, antibiotics and other children’s remedies in the market.

�The good news is that both Zipline and the Kaduna State Government have plans to deliver medical supplies to hundreds of health facilities to help create a more responsive, agile, and accessible health system.
