Topic: DISCOVERING PURPOSE
Text: Jer 29 verse 11
(Jer.29.11 - For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.)
••Everyone here on earth has been ordained with a purpose like we are not just being born on this planet earth without a purpose. God has given each of us a purpose not necessarily to be in the church of God but to be in our everyday life and to be at this world at large
WHAT IS PURPOSE?
Purpose can be defined as the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exist from. From a religious perspective, purpose has a physiological and theological meaning, it refers to the ultimate meaning and destiny of human life and seeing through the eye of faith.
In many religious tradition, purpose is seen as something that is God given or divinely influenced.
Everyone here on this earth is born with a purpose, but then purpose is something that means that you are fulfilled, something that God has ordained you that you find joy and happiness in it
•Verses that talks about purpose
1) Jeremiah 29:11 this verse is telling us the idea that our life have a higher purpose, a divine plan that is intended to bring about our ultimate flourishing . God has a plan for each of us and it is one that is good and hopeful. God cannot just give us a plan that he knows we won't be happy with but the one we will derive joy and happiness from.
2) Eccl 3:1-8, this passage acknowledges that life is made up of different seasons and experiences each with its own purpose and meaning.
There is time for everything under the sun and it is up to us to design what time it is and what the appropriate responses and that each and everything that happens to us happens for a purpose
3) Prov.16.19 - Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. This verse tells us that while we may make plans for our lives ultimately it is God who is in control and who direct our path.
Our plans may be well intentioned but we must be open to the leading of the holy spirit and willing to follow wherever God leads us to like he said that wherever the holy spirit leads us to and whatever the holy spirit tells us to do is what we are definitely going to do because the holy spirit will not just tell us something that is wrong but something that is accurate
And from Christian perspective purpose is not what we create for ourselves but something that is given to us by God. Our life has meaning when we align ourselves with God's plan and purpose for us. And actively seek to fulfil that purpose in our daily life.
• Ways in which we can discover purpose
1) Emerse yourself in the word of God
When you emerse yourself in the word you will see your priority aligning with God's priority and gain the sense purpose of God you have been missing and you may also discover some changes you need to make in your life to live more fully in God's will. Ask yourself what's your purpose in life as human like why has God created us and then from there you make it more personally by asking yourself what does the bible says about my purpose in life?.
The word of God which is the bible is not just an important historical document on interesting story, it's full of life given truth you can use to find direction and fulfill our purpose. In Ps.119.105 - NUN. Thy word is a lamp untoward my feet, and a light unto my path.)
the bible was telling us that once we soak ourselves in the word we will fine ways in discovering our purpose and God will be opening our eye to see things in the word that will actually help is in discovering our purpose
2) You pray for wisdom and discernment ( Jas.1.5 - If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him) We make decisions everyday without worrying about the eternal implications but there are times we want to joke upon God's wisdom in our lives and that is why Brother James tells us that all we need to so is to pray to God for wisdom. If we ask for wisdom God will give us because he sees that we want to use it to do his will and to fulfil our purpose which is what he has actually given to us in this life
3) Priotize doing God's will (Matt.6.33 - But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.) Jesus spoke this word to the people that were worried about concerns like food and clothing, like what they will eat and what they will wear, they actually lives on a day to day experience and they were not necessarily asking good questions about their purpose but their questions were about securing the next day sustenance and even about those genuineness Jesus actually encouraged them to focus on their personal holiness and thus become increasingly important when our anxiety is less about how we will take care if ourselves tomorrow and not about what God want us to do in 5-10 years from now but unfortunately pointering this enormous questions can prohibit us from focusing on the things we have the power to do right now. Making small daily decisions to love God, love others and practice personal holiness. If we are to actually shift our mind from thinking about what we need right now to actually think about what will bring glory to God, about what we will do with our lives that will bring glory to God is when we know that we are discovering our purpose and what the Lord wants us to understand is that as we turn our attention to living rightly and expanding God's kingdom around us a lot of the other things that we are worried about will work itself out, that is what Jesus was trying to say that we should not worry about tomorrow for the morrow will worry about their self
4) Pay attention to your passion
Each one of us has God given interest and passion that actually drives us. We see issues or problems that we are enthusiastic about solving and then sometimes sin causes us to get caught up in those passions in a way that isn't helpful. For instance, we see Moses in the bible who started to have really strong feelings about how the Hebrews were treated in Egypt and unfortunately that passion led him to take the life of an Egyptian that was beating an Israelite but overtime we see that the passion was actually God given even though the initial response was wrong but we saw that Moses really had passion for his people even though he went through the wrong way but he fulfil that purpose God has actually ordained him for
• People that were driven by their passions
1) Nehemiah (Nehemiah 1:4)
2) Esther
3) Daniel
4) Paul
Obstacles can come our way which will make us discover our purpose in God just as it happens in the lives of those mentioned above
• What is God's main purpose of creating is here on earth
1) To glorify him, to give honour to his name
2) To praise him (psalms 86:9-12)
3) To spread the gospel (psalms 96:3)
4) To use our gift and talent to serve him
• Signs to know you are fulfilling God's given purpose
1) You do nothing except you are being led by the holy spirit
2) Your peace increases by the day
Peace is not just the absence of challenges and persecutions it is that inner calmness in the midst of it. The peace that God gives come when we are in the center of carrying out our divine purpose for our life, it comes when we are in alignment with God's will, when our priority is with God's priority that is when we experience that inner peace, inner calmness in our day to day activities
3) The devil concentrates his forces on you
• Signs to know that you are not living in God's purpose
1) You will become complaisant/ comfortable with sin.
2) You don't have hope for the future
3) You are aimless/ not focused
• 4 Questions to ask yourself to discover your purpose
1) what is that thing you are willing to do without being paid?
2) what do you have passion for?
3) what gets you angry when you see people doing it wrongly?
4) what is that thing you think you can do more than anybody else?
•In conclusion, discovering purpose takes intentionality and seriousness. You must be ready to put in all it takes until you find it you won't stop it
