In commemorating 2024 International Women's Day, the rallying cry remains clear; "Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress." Recognizing the pivotal role women play in societal advancement, it is imperative to channel resources towards their empowerment.

EKITI STATE COLLABORATES WITH ADOLFRIC ON EXPANDED GBV PREVENTION INITIATIVE

Ekiti State Government, through the Adolescent Girls’ Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project of the State’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, is collaborating with Adolescent Friendly Research Initiative and Care (ADOLFRIC; https://adolfric.org.ng/ ) on expanded Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention initiative.

The expanded GBV prevention initiative focuses on Ekiti secondary school male students and their male teachers, sensitizing them on ways to curb Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The initiation and ex*****on of the expanded initiative was consequent upon the realization that the existing structure on advocacy, training and attention had been solely directed at girls (the major victims); with boys (the major perpetrators) relatively neglected in the prevention chain.

The advocacy program would be carried out in phases in all the 3 senatorial districts and Local Governments of the State; the first phase of the program spanned the months of July and August, 2023.

In an interview with the CEO of ADOLFRIC, Dr Babatunde Olofinbiyi, he lauded the unusual proactiveness of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji and her Excellency, Dr (Mrs) Olayemi Oyebanji, in sustaining Ekiti legacy of GBV prevention. He also commended the Governor for his striking multisectoral touch and gesture of equity and equality that transcend beyond GBV and health.

The CEO also commended the exceptional performance of the political duo: Hon. Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Dr (Mrs) Kofoworola Aderiye and Hon. Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Olapeju Babafemi; and their able administrative twin sisters: Dr (Mrs) Gbonjubola Olomojobi (Permanent Secretary, Education) and Mrs Omotayo Olatilu (Permanent Secretary, Women’s Affairs), in the implementation and actualization of the various policies and programs designed for GBV prevention in the State. He also appreciated and congratulated the Hon. Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Oyebanji Filani, on the various verifiable feats recorded in health and other health-related Ministries of the State.

Ekiti State is not only walking the talk but also in the forefront in national and global struggle against the monster, GBV!

NEWS: RCOG - TRAINED NATIONAL CHAMPIONS COLLABORATE WITH RCOG TO TRAIN STATE CHAMPIONS ON MAKING ABORTION SAFE

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists trained clusters of champions in 5 African countries on "Making Abortion Safe". The 5 countries included Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Sudan and Nigeria; with Nigerian champions (comprising 10 professionals) led by Prof Friday Okonofua.

This was consequent upon the appreciation of the huge contribution of unsafe abortion to Maternal Mortality and Morbidity. The main objective of the initiative is to improve women's and girls' access to safe abortion (within the full extent of the law), post abortion care and post abortion contraceptive services.

In order to step the initiative down to all the states of the federation, the RCOG collaborated with and sponsored the National champions to train a champion from each of the States of Nigeria.

The first phase of the training, involving a representative from each of the 17 States in Southern Nigeria, took place at OAUTHC, Ile-Ife. Ekiti State was represented by Dr Olofinbiyi, Babatunde of Ekiti State University College of Medicine/Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti. Dr Olofinbiyi is also the CEO of Adolescent Friendly Research Initiative and Care (ADOLFRIC; adolfric.org.ng ), a Nigeria-based clinically and research-oriented civil society organization that focuses on adolescent s*xual and reproductive health.

The State champions are to step down and coordinate all issues related to unsafe abortion at the State level; especially in the areas of professionalism, normalization and leadership. A central issue in the initiative process is the conceptualization and conduct of unsafe abortion-related researches that should influence policies surrounding the prevention and treatment of unsafe abortion.

The Adolescent Friendly Research Initiative and Care (ADOLFRIC; https://adolfric.org.ng/ ) Community regrets to announce the death of its Life Patron, benefactor and foundation financial pillar of the organization, Alhaji (Barr) Sanni Yakubu Oladoro. Alhaji, until his death, was not only a main contributor to the conceptualization of the initiation of ADOLFRIC but also a blind financial and moral supporter of the organization in all ramifications.

The Chief Executive Officer of Adolescent Friendly Research Initiative and Care , Dr Babatunde Olofinbiyi, has described the death of the patriarch as a rude shock and the departure of a great icon. Alhaji Sanni remains an unmatchable Ekiti-born fearless fighter, altrustic creature, strikingly transparent personality, silent philanthropist, forerunner in the fight for emancipation and a devoted muslim.

Also according to the CEO, Alhaji Sanni was his main educational, academic, professional, marital social, vocational and spiritual benefactor whose contribution to his success in life would remain ever-green in his memory. Ekiti State, Iworoko and Muslim communities will miss the rare gem.

Alhaji Sanni was a retired Permanent Secretary, former commissioner in Ekiti State and the immediate past President, Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Ekiti State.

ADOLFRIC is also using this medium to appreciate the Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, and his cabinet for providing all the necessary supports and logistics to give the icon a befitting burial, even with a very short notice; the entire Muslim and Christian communities are appreciated for their support; we also thank Iworoko Community, Ekiti State Civil service, other Ekiti indigenes, friends and acquaintances from within the state and outside for their contributions.

Dr Babatunde Yusuf, Orthopedic Surgeon at EKSUTH and the entire management of Eden Life Specialist Hospital, Ado-Ekiti are appreciated for their rare ruggedness, resilience and humanitarian touch to save the life of the deceased during his last hours. We give all glory to God for a life well spent.

ADOLFRIC and EKSACA SET TO COLLABORATE ON ENDING STIGMATIZATION AMONG THE KEY POPULATION

Ekiti SACA officials, led by Dr Charles Doherty, the General Manager, visited ADOLFRIC with a collaboration request on the handling of the key populations in HIV prevention and management. The two organizations, following hours of robust deliberation, agreed to collaborate on the management of the key populations in Ekiti HIV Control. Gay men and other men who have s*x with men, s*x workers, transgender people, people who inject drugs and prisoners and other incarcerated people are the five main key population groups that are particularly vulnerable to HIV and frequently lack adequate access to services.

As part of the mandate of the Adolescent Friendly Research Initiative and Care (ADOLFRIC; www.adolfric.org.ng ) to ensure a safer society especially for teenagers and young adults, the organisation is partnering with the Ekiti State Aids Control Agency (EKSACA) in ensuring that key populations are given quality care in the society.

ADOLFRIC CEO, Dr Babatunde Olofinbiyi, a very passionate adolescent reproductive health expert and researcher at Ekiti State University College of Medicine, while welcoming the visitors to ADOLFRIC, presented the ongoing project of the organization, the One- Stop Adolescent and Youth Friendly Reproductive Health Center being built in Ekiti State. He assured the State Government that the organisation, being a research-oriented NGO with a highly dynamic research hub, would be ready to help coordinate, package and publish high quality research works that would positively influence policy on the management of the key populations, among which there is high level of unmet needs for reproductive healthcare, especially the adolescents and young adults among them.

Dr Olofinbiyi Babatunde, who spoke on the vision behind the one -stop Adolescent and Youth Friendly Reproductive Health Centre, explained that the center is designed to meet the reproductive health, social, recreational and research needs of Nigerian adolescents and young people, and at the same time addressing the challenges of cost, confidentiality and stigmatization.

Earlier in his address, EKSACA General Manager, Dr Charles Doherty, who led the group to ADOLFRIC, advocated that the ADOLFRIC Center should help incorporate the key populations into the scope of work of ADOLFRIC with a view to creating a harmonious society, free of cohecion, fear and stigmatization.

Dr Doherty also commended the leadership of ADOLFRIC for its highly specialized roles, impacts and effectiveness in Ekiti State reproductive health structure.

The SACA boss explained further that the key populations have a high risk of contracting HIV/AIDS virus and spreading it to their partners, thus emphasizing the need for their sensitization, reorientation and care .

Also speaking at the meeting, the Executive Director of Acess to Health and Rights Development Initiative (AHRDI), Mr Peter Emmanuel, showed his appreciation to ADOLFRIC for accepting to work with the key populations in all ramifications, particularly in the area of research and care at the ADOLFRIC one- stop center. He also advised that not only testing and treatment alone should be provided for the key groups but they should also be empowered. He added that stigmatization should be eradicated in order to give them a voice and sense of belonging in the society.
