Girl, Bride, Mother: The Modern Slavery Called ‘Money Marriage’. | Richards Akonam | TEDxCalabar

GIRL, BRIDE, MOTHER: THE MODERN SLAVERY CALLED 'MONEY MARRIAGE'.

If you think the Trans-Atlantic slave trade was perhaps the highest expression of man’s inhumanity to man, then you may be wrong. There’s another kind of slave trade more barbaric, more brutal, more callous, more cruel, more demeaning, more despicable, more hellish and more horrendous than the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

It's a cultural practice by the Becheve tribes in Northern Cross River State, Nigeria, called ‘Money Marriage'. An elderly man buys a little girl for a wife. Her sole responsibility is to provide for herself and her old husband. She prostitutes to do so. When the husband dies, his next-of-kin marries her. If the girl-wife dies without giving birth to children, her parents bring a replacement. Girls are sold for as low as Ten Thousand Naira – about $29. The husband determines what he does with her – even if he uses her for ritual.

Every 2 seconds, a girl is married before she turns 18. Yearly, about 15 million girls are married before they turn 18. 1 in 3 girls in the developing world are married by age 18. Are there compelling justifications to end 'Money Marriage?' What new interventions will build a safer, healthier and more prosperous future for these 'Money Wives?'

Richards Akonam - a Career Missionary who has empowered these 'Money Wives' - draws on his 25 years of passionate work and strong advocacy against ‘Money Marriage’ (girl marriage) in Cross River State to answer these tough questions. What ingenious solutions does he proffer to this native and global challenge?

This turned out to be a very moving, emotional and heart-wrenching talk.

Richards Akonam is a Pioneer Missionary and works among the Utanga (Cross River State, Nigeria) and Becheve tribes (Benue State, Cross River State – Nigeria, and Republic of Cameroon) respectively. He’s the Director of Missions at Faithhouse Missions, as well as Director, Richgrace Foundation.

Richards has led Faithhouse Missions for 25 years, advocating strongly against the practice of ‘Money Marriage’ among the Becheve tribes. His work has given succour to indigent children and has redeemed and empowered many girls who once were sold into slavery through ‘Money Marriage’. He’s an author and song writer. He holds, among other certificates, a degree in Guidance and Counselling.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE NIGER DELTA.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE NIGER DELTA.

The Niger Delta means many things to many people. And that’s fine because people view the Niger Delta from the prism of their perspective. Just because one person is right doesn’t mean the other is wrong.

Perspective is subjective because reality can be so complex that equally valid observations from differing perspectives can appear to be contradictory.

Ibim Semenitari is passionate about the Niger Delta. The Niger Delta means a lot to her. Not just because she grew up going home riding in the boat, tasting the saltiness of the sea. Not just because she loves the sound of the water and the smell of the river.

From Ibim’s worldview, there’s a huge difference between the Niger Delta she experienced and the one she’s experiencing.

So, what has happened to the Niger Delta? What have we lost?
Where did we lose it? When did we lose it? How can we take it back?
How can we make it great again? What’s the solution and the way forward?

In this talk which video can be viewed on TEDxCalabar's page, Ibim Semenitari conducts a diagnosis and prescribes a possible cure.

Ibim Semenitari is the first Nigerian female journalist to win the CNN African Journalist of the year Award. She won the Nigeria Media Merit Award twice. She won the Diamond Award for Media Excellence on three occasions. She was named most outstanding Commissioner of Information and Communications in South-South Nigeria.

Ibim is a results-driven administrator successful at leading high-performing teams through all phases of projects, from concept development to implementation. She is an Information Management Strategy specialist, award winning journalist/Publisher, and veteran business/financial intelligence analyst with a rich professional profile.

She is a former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.

EMPOWERED BY A TOUCH: ATYPICAL STREET CHILD WHO BUILDS STREET CHILDREN.

According to a report from the Consortium for Street Children - a United Kingdom-based consortium of related non-governmental organizations (NGOs) - UNICEF estimates that 100 million children are growing up in urban streets around the world. This poses a serious threat to making cities inclusive, safe, and sustainable particularly because of the many problems that stem from this one problem, and how very few people are aware of this phenomenon.

In Nigeria, estimates say there are about 16 million out- of-school children, 80% of which live on the streets.

In this talk, James Okina tells a moving story of how a street child inspired him to found Street Priests Incorporated - a youth-led non-governmental organization which has transformed Nigeria's street children into assets for society.

Discover how a young boy's compassion has become a beacon of hope in a cosmopolitan area, transforming indigent children, reducing the rate of petty crimes by over 75%, reaching-out to over 3,000 children, successfully taking more than 316 children off the streets, and funded over 215 children back to school through a scholarship scheme.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 2014, James Okina founded Street Priests Inc. to tackle the societal challenge of street children. Having lived on the streets in 2007 when his parents separated, he turned to gangsterism.

In 2015 at age 14, James was awarded the Young Emerging Leader of the year by ‘‘Leader’s Den Foundation.’’ He has received ‘‘Future Africa Leader’s Award’’ given to individuals who drive change on the African Continent.

James was announced as one of 30 ‘‘Global Teen Leaders’’ from around the world. He was honored by the government of his State - Cross River State, Nigeria - as one of ‘‘50 Young Leaders to Watch’’ in the next 50 years.

THE FUTURE OF BRANDING.

Interruptive, intrusive, difficult-to-measure, traditional advertising is dying, resulting in plummeting ad spends. But a consumer-packaged goods (CPG) giant reduced its digital ad spend by $140 million in Q4 of 2017 yet its sales didn’t drop.

Does marketing have a new name?

Imagine consumers dreaming of their favourite brands while asleep!

What’s the future branding?

What different skill set and approach will this new, disruptive concept require for success?

In this talk, Charles O'Tudor takes us on a journey in answering these questions.

Charles O’Tudor deploys modern strategic and media paradigms in exploring visual and tactile briefs. He invents new brands, products and experiences deploying the cerebral filtration process credited to him. He has a bias and preference for native culture, visual dialects and modernities.

Charles serves as the Principal Consultant, ADSTRAT Consortium. He led a team of brand strategists that bided for and won Cross River State's pioneer ‘Out of Home’ media project’, and became Nigeria’s most renowned authority in State Branding after a successful creation, engagement and management of the Cross River State brand for 4 years. Law-making 2.0: Why Parliamentary Internship Matters | Onofiok Luke | TEDxCalabar

Lawmaking 2.0: Why Parliamentary Internship Matters.

Why should young people get involved in making laws?

How would they become highly-skilled parliamentarians?

What is the best route to mastering the art, science, nuts and bolts of being effective at the legislature?

What are the tools, tactics and techniques for making indelible legislative impact at lawmaking - a practice which requires excellent intellectual and argumentative rigour?

In this talk, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke, pioneer Speaker of the 109-member Nigeria Youth parliament; two-term (8 years) member of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Nigeria; Speaker of that Assembly; and currently Member Representing Etinan Federal Constituency in Nigeria's Federal House of Representatives, provides the answers.

What would you expect from someone who served as a legislative aide to a lawmaker, someone who is in passionate pursuit to raise a new breed of excellent and effective future lawmakers?

And what would you expect from Founder of The Onofiok Luke Legislative Internship Programme (TOLLIP) - Nigeria’s only stipendiary internship programme designed to train youths on legislative basics, entrepreneurship, community development, volunteerism and conflict resolution?

TOLLIP has been adopted and enlarged by Akwa Ibom State legislature into what is now known as the Akwa Ibom Legislative Internship Programme (AKILIP).

THE NIGERIAN STATE: MATTERS ARISING.

The tensions in Nigeria - economic stress, divisive rhetoric, primordial hatred, factious politics, sectarian violence, militant pastoralists, and multiple localized violent conflicts - are pulling the State in different directions.

There are terrorist forces in the North, secessionist rebels in the East, militancy in the South-South, endemic corruption, tribalism, marginalization, escalating poverty and gross inequality.

Can Nigeria survive?

Nigeria is experiencing the 'Triple Jeopardy of Youth': A young nation; a young democracy; and a young democracy grappling with the demands of a growing population of mostly young citizens.

Considering the three epochal struggles in Nigeria's history: The struggle against colonialism; the struggle against military rule; and the struggle to deepen democracy - what would prevent Nigeria from becoming a failed state?
