KIDNEY DISEASE PREVENTION/ AWARENESS- SIMPLE STEPS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR KIDNEY

TODAY (10 MARCH 2023) IS WORLD KIDNEY DAY WITH THE THEME: KIDNEY HEALTH FOR ALL (PREPARING FOR THE UNEXPECTED, SUPPORTING THE VULNERABLE )💯💯💯💯

The Centers for Disease Control and prevention report that among those with severely reduced kidney function, almost 50% are unaware that they have the disease, among those with mildly reduced kidney function, an overwhelming majority are unaware that they have the disease.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is more prevalent in women than in men and more common in Africans than in Whites.

Kidney disease increases risk of heart disease, stroke, immunosuppression, and depression, and lowers quality of life.

Kidneys play vital roles in the body, including: eliminating waste, regulating body fluids, blood pressure, provide endocrine function to support bone and red blood cell formation amidst others.

When the Kidneys do not function properly, it leads to the inability to perform its normal homeostatic control mechanisms as well as its excretory and endocrine functions. This can lead to buildup of waste products, fluid overload among other conditions.

Kidney disease may be hereditary or non-hereditary and maybe the result of direct insult or injury, drug toxicity, infection, as well as other disease states such as diabetes and hypertension.

If you notice the symptoms below in anyone around you or you, it means THEIR/YOUR KIDNEY FUNCTION HAS BEEN COMPROMISED:

-Their/Your urine output is less than 500 mL per day

- there is shortness of breath and difficulty in sleeping, as well as

-psychological symptoms such as confusion, depression, and anxiety.

It is important you visit the hospital immediately to carry out KIDNEY FUNCTION TEST so as to know the state of your kidney because if left prolonged can progress to KIDNEY FAILURE.

The cost of prevention of Kidney disease is far lesser than the treatment, so it is better you take good care of your kidney now. How do you do that?

HERE ARE SIMPLE STEPS TO KEEP YOUR KIDNEY HEALTHY:

1. STAY HYDRATED ESPECIALLY IN THIS HOT SEASON (DRINK MORE WATER AS MUCH AS YOU CAN PER DAY)

2. EAT HEALTHY DIET (RICH IN FRUITS, VEGGIES AND GRAINS)

3. CUT DOWN ON SALT INTAKE, SALTY OR FATTY FOOD

4. HAVE A REGULAR BLOOD PRESSURE AND KIDNEY FUNCTION CHECK

5. AVOID SMOKING OR DRINKING TOO MUCH ALCOHOL (1 bottle or less is enough for women and 2 bottles or less is enough for men), NOT DOING BOTH IS THE BEST.

6. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT NOT UNDERWEIGHT/OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE

NOTE: CONSULT A DIETITIAN 'live FOR PROPER COUNSELLING AND PERSONALIZED DIET PLAN IF YOU NOTICE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE IS HIGH OR YOU'RE HAVING AN UNHEALTHY WEIGHT.

A HEALTHY DIET AND LIFESTYLE LEADS TO A HEALTHY KIDNEY.

NIGERIAN FOODS HIGH IN SODIUM

Sodium is needed in our diet to stay healthy.

The American Heart Association recommends that adults consume no more than 2300 mg of sodium per day.

1 teaspoon (tsp) of table salt = 2300mg

The Dietary Guidelines for individuals with hypertension, blacks, middle age and older adults aim to consume no more than 1500 milligrams of sodium per day.

Even though sodium is a vital mineral for the proper functioning of your body, too much sodium isn't good for your health, especially if you have HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE.

It is good to know the Nigerian foods that are rich in sodium so you can make appropriate nutritional choices.

They are as follows:

1. Suya/Kilishi
2. Hot dogs
3. Baked Beans
4. Shawarma
5. Tomato Paste
6. Pizza and Sandwiches
7. Sardines
8. Biscuits
9. White Bread
10. Instant Noddles

You may visit our last post to know the tips to a lower salt diet.

Remember: Too much sodium can be dangerous to your health, leading to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

TIPS FOR A LOWER SALT DIET

Our primary source of sodium is table salt, chemically know as sodium chloride (Na40%Cl60%), added during food processing.

This mineral is an essential part of our diets and add flavor to our foods, but consuming sodium more than the recommended quantity may cause raised blood pressure which increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney failure.

Therefore, when it comes to dietary sodium, less is certainly best!

The more processed and restaurant food one consumes generally the higher one's sodium intake. Conversely, the more home cooking one does, the more sodium control that person has.

A teaspoon of salt contains about 2.3 grams of sodium (2300 milligrams)

The Dietary Guidelines recommends that the general population consume less than 2300 milligrams (approximately 1 teaspoon of salt) of sodium per day and choose and prepare with little salt.

The Dietary Guidelines for individuals with hypertension, blacks, middle age and older adults aim to consume no more than 1500 milligrams of sodium per day.

In order to help you lower your salt intake to the ideal daily recommendations, these tips below will be beneficial, carefully read through:

1. Use fresh rather than packaged/smoked meats.

Reason: Fresh cuts of meats such as beef, chicken, fish etc contains natural sodium but the content is still much less than the hidden extra sodium added during processing in meat/meat products.

2. For healthier snacks, choose fresh fruit and vegetables, as well, since they are low in sodium.

3. When buying tinned/frozen vegetables/pulses, choose those that are labelled "fresh frozen" and do not contain added seasoning or sauce.

4. Begin reading food labels as a matter of course. Sodium content is always listed.

Note: If you wish to know how to read food labels, please do well to contact us via the message button@desirable nutrition through adequate diet plan

5. Compare various brands of the same food item, until you find the one that has the lowest sodium content. Since this will vary from brand to brand.

6. Select spices or seasonings that do not list sodium on their labels i.e choose garlic powder over garlic salt.

7. Before dining (eating) out, do your research about the various dishes served in the restaurant or cafe with the list of their sodium content. You can request for the dish to be served by making smart food choices of lower salt or without salt.

8. Beware of products that don't taste especially salty but still have high sodium content

9. Cook with less salt

Many people add salt to food when they're cooking, but there are lots of ways to add flavor to your cooking without using any salts. Check out these salt alternatives

i. Use black pepper (uziza (Igbo), Ata iyere( Yoruba) seed) as seasoning instead of salt. Try it on pasta, scrambled eggs, fish and soup.

ii. Add fresh herbs and spices to pasta, dishes, vegetables and meat. Try garlic, ginger, chili and lime in stir fries.

iii. Make your own stock and gravy instead of using cubes or granules, or look out for reduced-salt products

iv. Trying baking or roasting vegetables such as red peppers, tomatoes, courgettes, fennel, parsnips and squash to bring out their flavor

v. Make sauces using ripe tomatoes and garlic

If you have elevated blood pressure dietary sodium restriction cannot only lower your blood pressure but can enhance your response to blood pressure medications.

Salt preference is an acquired taste that can be unlearned. It takes about 6-8 weeks to get used to eating foods with much lower quantities of salt, but once it's done, it's actually difficult to eat foods that taste way too salty.

Remember whether you're eating at home, cooking or eating out, don't add salt to your food automatically- TASTE IT FIRST

When you see a mother struggling with breastfeeding, do not judge her. Support her and offer her practical tips to help her breastfeed her baby successfully.

Here are great tips as clearly stated by Mrs. Chinyere Ekwueme, Nutrition officer with UNICEF NIGERIA, For every child:

"A breastfeeding mother might know the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, but she doesn't know how to do it and that's the problem.

How do you give her practical help?

-Tell her the baby needs to latch the lips, on the ar**la (that's the black part of the breast)

-The ni**le should be resting on the tongue and the baby grabs the ar**la with the lips, and the breast milk begins to flow (DIET A'LIVE)

-And under the ar**la is what we call the milk ducts, there are sacks there, under the ar**la- that black part of the breast.

-And if the baby is putting pressure on the ar**la, the breast milk begins to flow. The mother does not even need to press the breast.

-She just make sure that the four fingers are under the breast, and thumb on top just guiding it, you don't need to press it, and the baby will get optimally fed.

And the mother will be happy for it, because she doesn't know, and you have taught her, and you will be happy seeing the mother happy too. And we have healthy babies, who have been exclusively breastfed."

Did you know?

Breast milk is comprised of the essential nutrients that an infant needs in the first six months of life.

According to WHO and UNICEF:
"Early initiation of breastfeeding should be within 1 hour of birth".

Here are the reasons and the benefits your baby stands to get:

-Timely/Early initiation of breastfeeding guarantees that babies receive the "COLOSTRUM', the first breast milk', which contains antibodies that protect the newborn against diseases.

- Breastfeeding within the first hour of life also prevents newborn death due to sepsis, pneumonia, diarrhea and hypothermia.

But Mothers cannot be expected to do it alone. Early and exclusive breastfeeding needs to be supported by hospitals and birthing centers, healthcare workers, governments and families. (UNICEF/DIET A'LIVE)

Hello Lovely people

Did you know? Breastfeeding matters because:

-it is a low-cost way of providing the best nutrition for the baby.
-it protects the baby against common illnesses both in the short and long-term.
-it reduces the risk of cancer and other conditions in the mother.
-the cost of not breastfeeding is huge for families and nations.
-breastfeeding is also a climate-smart decision and key to sustainable development goals.

Therefore, WHO and UNICEF recommend: (DIET A'LIVE)

-Early initiation of breastfeeding within 1 hour of birth.
-Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life.
-Continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond, with the introduction of nutritionally adequate and safe complementary (solid) foods at 6 months.

Other Lifestyle Habits That Hurts Your Kidneys Without Your Knowledge include the following:

✓ Excessive use of processed foods: Although processed food may satisfy your midnight munches, those crispy morsels of bliss might be detrimental to your kidneys. Processed meals are high in sodium and phosphorus, which can contribute to kidney damage.

✓ Not Getting Enough Exercise: Kidney stones are substantially less likely in people who exercise at least three times each week. Walking is recommended for those with impaired kidney function because it can help with cardiovascular difficulties, which are a major health risk for people with CKD and those on dialysis. Make it a point to exercise for 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

✓ Consuming an excessive amount of alcohol: If you can't live without alcohol or wine, it could be the end of your kidneys. More than four drinks per day have been associated with a two-fold increase in the risk of chronic renal disease, according to studies.

✓ Excessive salt consumption: High-salt (sodium) foods and diets can raise your blood pressure, which can injure your kidneys. Rather than oversalting your meal, try seasoning it with herbs and spices. This habit will help you avoid adding salt to your diet over time.

Now that you've known the lifestyle habits that put your kidneys at the redline, would you continue to live such lifestyles or stop it to maintain the shape of your kidneys? (DIET A'LIVE)

LIFESTYLE HABITS THAT HURTS YOUR KIDNEYS WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE

Your kidneys play a crucial part in the overall health of your body. They aid in the removal of waste and excess fluid from the body. They also eliminate acid to keep the water, salt, and minerals in the body in a healthy equilibrium.

It's critical to keep your kidneys in good shape. (DIET A'LIVE)

✓ Not Consuming a Vitamin-rich Diet (especially vitamins D and B6): Certain vitamins like vitamin D and B6 are beneficial to your kidneys, and a deficiency can cause damage. Vitamin D can be obtained by sitting in the sun for 10-15 minutes each day. Vitamin B6 can be found in salmon, tuna, poultry, chickpeas, potatoes,
some vegetables and fruits, especially dark leafy greens, bananas, papayas, oranges, and cantaloupe

✓ Overuse of painkillers: That constant headache may tempt you to reach for the pills daily, but overdoing so might be hazardous to your kidneys.

✓ Inadequate Water Consumption: It's critical to keep your body hydrated. Our kidneys assist in the elimination of waste. It is suggested that you drink 12 glasses of water every day.

Iron is an important mineral the body needs to make haemoglobin, a substance in the blood that carries oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body.

Iron is also an important part of many other proteins and enzymes needed by the body for normal growth and development.

This brings us to debunking the nutrition myth that plantain contains a lot of iron 😱 as the iron in plantain is just 3% of our daily value which is not up to a person's RDA. (DIET A'LIVE)

If you want food rich in iron sources include pumpkin leaves, beetroot, soya bean, and liver. Don't forget to throw in vitamin C foods for easier absorption.😍

Refer back to our previous post to see the sources of iron and vitamin c foods, listed above. 👆
