Our maiden digital training workshop on Nelson Handwriting was awesome!! The Lord's name alone be praised!!
A huge THANK YOU to all resilient participants-educators and parents who bluntly refused to be caged and imprisoned by Covid-19 pandemic. They engaged from far and near, way beyond Lagos State, which could have been pretty difficult in pre-covid era considering the distance, cost of transportation, space, time, inconvenience and so on...

Schools defied all odds to sponsor and encourage their teachers in their tens and twenties to participate from the comfort of their homes in the online training workshop. They clearly understand that life is like riding a bicycle. To keep one's balance, he/she must keep moving, knowing very well that "everything negative provides a great opportunity to rise." Covid or no covid, such schools have decided to forge ahead, to seize the moment and distinguish themselves from the crowd.

Young children need their hands and fingers to hold things, open doors, eat, dress up, draw,write and do many other things. Their hands are initially weak to perform these skills. They should have strength and dexterity in their hands and fingers before being asked to manipulate a pencil on paper.

Parents and teachers often expect too much from the little angels when they are expected to write and draw straight lines even beyond two years.

Now is the time to help develop and build their hand and finger muscles in preparation for life ahead and a fun-filled academic journey.

From total lockdown to restricted movements, Parents and caregivers should do well to use fun and easy child-friendly activities to enhance their young children's uptimal development.

They should be involved in the household laundry. Show them how to wash their stockings, pants, handkerchiefs and others. Encourage them to sweep their room, living room or any mess around them. They can wrap rubber bands around empty cans or water bottles, use sticks to pick up bottle caps, put pencils inside pencil holder or empty coke cans through the holes.

Tearing old newspaper into strips and crumple them into balls or crunching up one sheet of old newspaper in one hand, are great activities for building strength in the hands and fingers.

These fun and easy activities are inexpensive, easily available and highly effective. Explore them with your toddlers and preschoolers, discover more, enjoy the bonding of staying together and learning effortlessly.

It's never too early to start getting your children involved with language and literacy actuvities. Even babies enjoy listening to stories and being part of conversations.

Five minutes a few times a day is good enough to get your child started on his literacy journey. The key is using different times and opportunities to help your child learn.

You can talk about the food you are preparing, what you are doing to it, how it tastes and what it looks like.

Repeat sounds your child likes or make up sounds and see whether your child can copy them. For example, cows say "moo", can you say moo? Ducks say "quack"......Constantly talking and singing with your young children help them develop listening and speaking skills.

You can do well to continue building on the bonding and skills you have initiated in your child during the covid-19 lockdown experience. Neither you nor your child will regret it in future.

When children are pushed to do something they don't enjoy or that is beyond their skills, they feel like failures. This could adversely affect their development and subsequent success in school and life.

Early language and literacy skills are learned best through everyday moments with your child such as reading books, talking , laughing and playing together.

Children learn language when you talk to them and they communicate back to you, by hearing stories read and songs sung to them.

Take advantage of the free sit-at-home period to lay a solid foundation for your child's love of reading and development of vocabularies that will boost his/her future communication skills.

Enjoy the moment with your child/children while it lasts!!!

Children in their early years, learn a lot from activities that promote active learning. They love it most when parents are involved in their learning.

The prevailing lockdown resulting from the ravaging covid-19 pandemic should provide an excellent opportunity for parents' involvement in their children's learning.

Staying glued to the Television or IPad will not yield such an effective result as exposing them to different simple actuvities of everyday routine to develop their memory, concentration and attention span.

Some Easy and Fun Ways to Enhance Children's Learning

-Sing-a -long songs with your child and encourage him sing along with you. Play favourite songs and music in the house regularly and he will gradually start singing along by himself.

-Listen to sounds and noises around you with your child. Encourage him to identify noises he hears such as birds singing, car horn, running water, airplane and so on. This will help him understand how sounds relate to objects in his environment.

-Count with your infant and toddler the number of spoons on the table, shoes on the rack, slices of bread for breakfast, sachets of water inside a bag, his fingers , toes etc. Soon, your child enjoys counting everything around him.

-Identify shapes and colours whenever interacting with your child. You can tell him "This is a blue round ball, the pink cube, red triangle and so on. As he gets older, you can ask him to describe objects.

- Encourage your child to match various household items like plastic bottles, boxes that are child-sized with their lids. Have him look into the mirror with you and point to his nose, mouth, eyes, ears... Everyday household items make great open-ended learning materials for the child. Always ensure they are safe.

When you do these and more with your child, they will live to remember covid-19 all through their lives for parents' time and love shared.

Let's peek at Practical Life Activities. These are activities of our daily life, things we do taking care of ourselves and our environment and which is considered the cornerstone of the Montessori method of education.

The child is an integral member of the family who though a child today, will certainly grow to be the adult of tomorrow. He needs to be taught and shown how to do things himself, take care of his environment, relate well with others in his environment, develop his motor skills and dexterity.

Most often, the adults are always in a haste either to catch up with appointments, attend to job demands and other household responsibilities that children are the least to be considered. To the adults, teachers are good enough and are paid for their job. Now that everybody is compulsorily at home, it is the time to pay attention to the needs of the children to calm them down, help them become independent and responsible.

Hand washing- an important activity in Practical Life is most critical at this crucial time of the ravaging pandemic COVID-19. Teach your child even the toddler how to get his hands thoroughly washed with soap and water using the following simple steps.

You need the following materials;
-Water
-soap
-Bowl (2) if you don't have a running tap child-sized
-Sit beside your child
-Wet your hands with clean water
-Apply soap
-Lather your hands by rubbing them together with soap
-Lather the backs of your hands between your fingers and under the nails
-Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds
-Rinse with clean water from the 2nd bowl
-Dry with a clean napkin or air dry them
-Encourage your child to practice it while you observe

Other Activities you can encourage your child to learn include Sweeping, Dressing the bed, Setting the table for breakfast, lunch or dinner, Putting away toys, Clearing the table, Picking beans, Helping out in the kitchen, Washing plates, and many others.
Involving the kids in these activities, helps them feel loved, respected and valued. They can confidently take care of themselves, develop independence, develop concentration which lays the foundation for all forms of learning.

Handwashing with soap helps remove germs, prevent infections as people constantly touch their eyes, nose, mouth without realizing it.

When we create time to teach our children in their early years such very important life skills, they will grow with a positive attitude all through their lives. Hand washing becomes a part of them that parents and teachers need not remind them to do the needful. If all adults of today have inculcated the habit of handwashing from their early years, our homes, communities, and nations would have been free from the various deadly diseases and viruses ravaging the world today or their devastating effects could have been drastically reduced.
