Aunty Suzy
I must have been three or four years old when I met her. She bought me and some other kids ice-cream, from one of the cycling ice cream men along the road. But I would never forget the euphoria I felt from that single act of kindness. At the moment, I thought she was the most beautiful woman I had ever met. She was fair and had on bright red lipstick. I named my doll after her and years later after the taste of the icecream was forgotten, it seemed my entire family had understood that I had taken such a liking to the name.
One day, my sister tells me, "Aunty Suzy is in Nigeria and we are going to see her." I was so excited, I could barely keep anything down. So, you can imagine my disappointment when I ran towards her and saw the exact opposite of what I remembered. This Aunty Suzy was my sister's friend. She was much younger than I remembered, dark and didn't look anything like my memory. I stood there not knowing what to do, but knowing that this woman is a stranger. I guess she must have sensed it, because she also gave me a strange look.
Years later, I asked my mum. "You had a friend named Suzy, that was fair...." and I gave what other description I could remember.
"Oh, yes. I did. She has been in England for a long time now, but recently died of cancer." While I was sad to hear that, I immediately realised how important little acts of kindness are to children. For many them, they never forget.
