Mind-bending doc 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐬𝐩å𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐥𝐞 is showing at Cinecenter as of this week! In the film, a divine premonition leads two sisters to buy an apartment in the small Swedish town of Gullspång. To their surprise, the seller looks identical to their older sister - who died by su***de 30 years earlier... We're not giving away anything else, as this film definitely benefits from going in cold. We will spoil this, though: every screening of The Gullspång Miracle is preceded by wonderful, darkly comic animated short 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐖𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫, by BAFTA winner Nina Gantz! Ramon, Maya and Elizabeth make it 6500 for Perfect Days! The film's incredible longevity at Cinecenter - it's been playing for 35 weeks and counting - reached a milestone last night with the attendance of these three lovely filmgoers. We fêted our special guests with a nice bottle of bubbles and some cool CC tees - honestly, we couldn't have wished for 3 nicer people to receive this prize :) Many thanks to Ramon, Maya and Elizabeth and, indeed, to 𝙖𝙡𝙡 you fine film fans who made Perfect Days such a succes at our theatre ❤️ 🥂 Here's to many more!

Om te zeggen dat Wim Wenders' prachtige Perfect Days een publiek heeft gevonden, is een understatement: na maar liefst 35 speelweken - de film kwam uit in december van vorig jaar! - draait de film nog steeds wekelijks voor volle zalen bij Cinecenter. Het ziet er dan ook naar uit dat we aanstaande zondag een mijlpaal bereiken: voor de voorstelling van 19.45 gaan we de 6500e bezoeker van Perfect Days verwelkomen. Tatami, helmed by Israeli director Guy Nattiv and Iranian director/actor Zar Amir, is a film about opposing forces, locked together in a battle of wits and wills, and about perseverance in the face of looming defeat.

Joan Crawford. Bette Davis. Twee karakteractrices uit het roemruchte gouden tijdperk van de Amerikaanse cinema. In Cinecenter hangen hun (authentieke) handtekening en portret zij aan zij in de vitrine, een eerbetoon aan vervlogen tijden en aan de chemie die de twee sterren hadden in de thriller What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? uit 1962.

Maar op de set was de harmonie ver te zoeken: de diva's gunden elkaar het licht in de ogen niet en poogden elkaar zelfs fysiek pijn te doen. Het stond het succes van de film niet in de weg: het publiek in de jaren '60 kon niet wachten om te zien hoe deze langlopende vete zich op het grote doek zou manifesteren, en dat viel niet tegen: de spanning tussen Bette en Joan is voelbaar en knettert van het scherm.

Baby Jane werd een enorme hit en luidde, samen met Psycho, een nieuw tijdperk van horror in. Daarmee schaarde de film zich in de "hall of fame" van Hollywood en daarom blikken we aanstaande donderdag - Throwback Thursday - terug op Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

Onze kenner Hajo de Bruyne zal de film inleiden om duiding te geven bij het historische succes van de film - en natuurlijk bij de vurige vete die woedde tussen deze twee grandes dames van de filmwereld...

The votes have been counted and, even though things got pretty heated for a while, last week's Aperitivo poll has a clear winner: it's John Carpenter' masterful 1982 horror The Thing! With good reason, of course: thanks to its stupefying, groundbreaking practical effects and excruciatingly tense plot, about a group of scientists on an isolated polar base that fall prey to a shapeshifting entity from another world and to their own paranoia, The Thing has become the stuff of legend and still terrifies today.

Indeed, The Thing is not for the faint of heart, but for those of you who've never seen it: we promise you it's worth it. Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard spelen in Memory de sterren van de hemel, in een prachtig drama dat ruim baan biedt aan beide karakteracteurs.

Chastain is Sylvia, die een overzichtelijk en gestructureerd leven leidt waarin verleiding en losbandigheid in de ban zijn gedaan. Ze verdeelt haar tijd over haar dochter, baan en AA-bijeenkomsten. Na de reünie van haar middelbare school wordt ze naar huis gevolgd door voormalig klasgenoot Saul, gespeeld door Sarsgaard. De volgende ochtend treft ze Saul slapend op haar stoep aan. Vanaf dat moment is niets meer hetzelfde... Memory is vanavond en morgenavond te zien als avant-première bij Cinecenter, en gaat vanaf donderdag 1 augustus regulier draaien.

40 years ago, the brothers Coen launched their directorial careers with Blood Simple, paving the way for one of the most illustrious bodies of work in cinema history. Hors-Saison is een film zoals we ze graag zien bij Cinecenter: vakkundig geregisseerd, fraai geschoten, invoelend geacteerd en op en top Frans. Vooral dat laatste kunnen we waarderen, en Hors-Saison draagt zijn Frans-heid met trots, vooral in de ietwat doorleefde tederheid en de prachtige locaties, aan de kust van Bretagne.

Daar hoort een goede wijn bij, vonden we, en daarom vroegen we de kenners van Vindict WINE op de Elandsgracht, een passende wijn bij deze film te zoeken. Het resultaat: een loepzuivere, droge Sauvignon Blanc van Domaine La Tour Beaumont die perfect past bij de intieme, delicate sfeer van de film.

The film confounded audiences and critics alike when it came out, but has since achieved classic status - in 2008, Cahiers du Cinema named it the 2nd best film of all time - and is essential viewing for anyone interested in cinema history. Robert Mitchum, living embodiment of movie start charisma, proclaimed his portrayal of the murderous Harry Powell his best role. The character's love / hate speech and accompanying knuckle tattoos have become iconic, being referenced in Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing, among others.
