During the EuroGames Vienna 2024, the partners in the European Erasmus+ Gender - Community Wellbeing project met to monitor progress on the August deliverables and to begin defining the requirements for the final conference to be held in Berlin, Germany, in October 2025.

The EuroGames 2024 in Vienna were a celebration of diversity, inclusion, and sports.

From July 17th to 19th, the event was not only a platform for athletes to showcase their skills, but also an opportunity to highlight important initiatives aimed at fostering equality in sports.

A Milestone in LGBTQI+ Sport and Leadership

🗞️ The vibrant city of Vienna played host to an important event for the LGBTQI+ sports community during the EuroGames 2024, as 20 participants representing partners of the groundbreaking project “+PLUSS: LGBTQI+ Policy and Leadership in Sport and Society” gathered for a mid-term review on July 17th. This meeting marked a significant milestone as the project reached the halfway point of its intended lifespan, providing an opportunity to evaluate progress and reinforce strategies for future success.

🏳️‍🌈🏆 Last week at the EuroGames Vienna 2024, the “Combating Hate Speech in Sport” project took center stage with its impactful campaign, “Sport IS Respect”! 🌟

During the EGLSF reception event, Rosario Coco, expert of the Council of Europe, shared the main results and outputs of our project, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe. This initiative aims to promote inclusivity, respect, and equality in sports, standing strong against hate speech and discrimination.

Athletes and stakeholders from all over joined us to celebrate these achievements and support a future where sport is a safe and welcoming space for everyone. Together with European institutions, we are making strides towards a more respectful and inclusive sporting community. 💪🏳️‍🌈

🏅 Sara Perez García
Current president of Diversport, Spanish activist and advocate who has made significant strides in promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion. Within the club, founded 5 years ago, she has established a ‘great family’ with more than 300 members in 10 different sports and created a welcoming environment for people of all nationalities and backgrounds, particularly those who might feel excluded from traditional sports clubs.

🏅 Otto Drakenberg
Olympian from Sweden and former fencer. Otto made significant contributions on the international stage, standing for the LGBTIQ+ community in the audience, refusing to be silenced despite loud protests. He later reported the IFF to the International Olympic Committee.

🌍 Exciting Partnership Meeting in Vienna! 🌍

Today, at the beautiful premises of the Vienna Institute for International Dialogue and Cooperation, EGLSF and our dedicated project partners gathered for a significant partnership meeting.

Our discussions focused on planning the final activities of our project and strategizing on the best ways to disseminate our results. Together, we are committed to establishing an inclusive and open sports culture that welcomes all genders and sexualities.

Yesterday, we celebrated the vibrant reception of the EuroGames at the French embassy in Vienna! This event marked the symbolic handover of the EuroGames from the 2024 host city, Vienna, to the 2025 host, Lyon, France.

The evening was a testament to the unwavering commitment from the city of Vienna, Austrian and French institutions, and the EGLSF. We were honored by the presence of the French ambassador, representatives from Team Vienna and Team Lyon, Lyon’s city officials, and the EGLSF president and secretary general, along with the entire EGLSF board.

Together, we celebrated unity, diversity, and the future of inclusive sports in Europe. 🌈

🌈 The EuroGames Vienna 2024 opening ceremony celebrated diversity and inclusion in sports at Europe’s largest LGBTIQ+ event. A total success, with Erika Patrikainen, EGLSF General Secretary, and Hugh Torrence, EGLSF President, presenting awards to Vienna’s mayor and the host team organizers. The event was highlighted by a stellar performance from Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst, welcoming everyone to Vienna and wishing the EuroGames success! 🏳️‍🌈✨

Exciting Project Meeting at the EuroGames! 🌟

Yesterday, the PLUSS project 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ partners gathered in Vienna during the EuroGames for an inspiring and productive meeting. The event brought together 9 different partners, all dedicated to fostering inclusivity and development in sports.

Grassroot sport associations shared their unique strategies for growth, showcasing innovative approaches and collaborative efforts to enhance the sports community. The discussions also delved into ongoing and upcoming activities, laying the groundwork for exciting future initiatives.

OUT IN SPORT: HOW SPORT CAN UNITE AND NOT DIVIDE 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ EuroGames Vienna 2024

On Wednesday, July 17, the first day of EuroGames, the LGBTIQ+ Sports Conference was hosted by Viktoria Mall. The event opened with remarks from Alexander Van der Bellen, President of Austria, along with Werner Kogler, Věra Jourová, and Volker Türk. Discussions included the significance of hosting the EuroGames in Vienna, with contributions from Yvonne Rychly, Dieter Brosz, and Ulrike Lunacek.

Participants like Elsa Arapi, Matthias Führer, and Julian Hadschieff spoke on making sports accessible to all. Nikola Staritz and Remi Jokiranta highlighted the inclusion of trans-, inter-, and non-binary athletes. The conference also addressed challenging patriarchal attitudes in sports, featuring experts such as Stefanie Auf dem Berge and Claudia Koller.
