We offer our deepest condolences on the passing of Prof. Ibrahim Musa Mohammed Hamdon (1953-2024), Director General of the Sudanese National Corporation of Antiquities and Museums (NCAM) and professor at Neelain University.
We feel incredibly fortunate for Prof. Musa's participation as an invited speaker at the ICE 2023 opening ceremony last August, where he gifted the Egyptological community with a moving speech that will always be with us.
🎶 Dear Egyptologists:
In the Netherlands, we celebrate Sinterklaas tonight!
We’ll exchange gifts and poems with all our might.
In August, many of you paid us a visit
to join our congress, and we’re happy you did it!
Remember: we would really appreciate
your text for the proceedings – before 15 March, don’t be late!🎶
Best wishes from Leiden, Sint & Piet.*

Guidelines for Contributions to the Proceedings of the 13th International Congress of Egyptologists (ICE 2023):
Deadline: 15 March 2024.
* Only papers and posters included in the congress programme may be submitted as a contribution to the congress proceedings. We invite all paper and poster presenters to check their email for our latest update on the 13th ICE Proceedings.
The Proceedings of the 13th International Congress of Egyptologists will appear in the Egyptologische Uitgaven series published by Peeters Publishers, Leuven, and the Netherlands Institute for the Near East, Leiden. The Organising Committee of the 13th ICE edits the proceedings.
Our Guidelines for the ICE 13 Proceedings are based on the rules for short communications in the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology and reiterate a few important points from these rules (www.ice2023.com/en/news/proceedings). The full Journal of Egyptian Archaeology Style Guidelines are available as a pdf download at www.ees.ac.uk/writing-for-the-jea (button “JEA Referencing Guide”).
* Important: Compliance with the Guidelines for the ICE 13 Proceedings, as well as the quality of the contribution’s language, will be checked by the editors. Both criteria will be decisive for accepting the papers, meaning submission does not guarantee publication unless the language and format meet the required standards.

Congress photos Below is a selection of photos taken during the 13th International Congress of Egyptologists, 6-11 August 2023 in Leiden, by official congress photographer Ashley Wilkinson.
More on the Leiden Unified Transliteration/Translation, this time on Dutch radio: Olaf Kaper tells Wilfried de Jong how a breakthrough consensus was reached in Met het Oog op Morgen.
Headlining 📰 in Dutch national newspaper NRC: “Finally, there is again a standard for converting hieroglyphs to the Latin script.”
As Olaf Kaper explains: After more than a century, Egyptologists have once again established a standard for converting the most important hieroglyphs. 🤝 Everyone used to have their own system.
Together with the lectures and workshops, 55 posters were presented to the ICE 2023 participants in four thematic poster sessions: “Funerary and cultic practices”, “Digital Egyptology”, “History and archaeology”, and “Heritage, reception and museology”.
On Wednesday, the ICE XIII Scientific Committee members awarded three ICE-BAR Publishing poster prizes:
🥇”Middle Kingdom Female Figurines: A Case of Dots and Dashes – Deciphering the Code”, by Angela M. J. Tooley.
🥈”The Death of Greco-Roman Egypt. Defining Ethnicity through Iconography: BD Spell 151 and the Funerary Motifs on Ptolemaic and Roman Mummy Masks and Cases”, by Lorelei Corcoran.
🥉”From Dig to Digital: The Future of Scarab Documentation”, by Vanessa Boschloos (coauthored with Alexander Ilin-Tomich).

The thematic workshops were one of the highlights of ICE 2023 🤓. Together with the very successful “Transliteration Meeting”, other six public workshops were held during the Congress week:
- Open Forum: The Future of Ancient Egypt.
- Early Career Workshop.
- AI Workshop: ChatGPT and LMM in Egyptology.
- Big Data Workshop.
- Institutions in the spotlight.
- Museum Workshop: Engaging (young) audiences.

One of the innovative and special social events of the ICE 2023 was the 🎤 Early Career Event 🥳, hosted at the Oranjerie of the Hortus botanicus Leiden 🌳.
More than 200 BA and MA students, PhD candidates and recent postdocs joined for the drinks, finger food and inspiring talks organised by the Leiden Study Association Dispute Pleyte in collaboration with The International Association of Egyptologists.
During the Congress week of ICE 2023, crowded hallways, bookstands, lecture rooms and poster lounges were the daily routine 😄. Thank you to all the participants for the fantastic atmosphere.
