IE is going to Paris! 🎇🍷🚀
The Shift Study Trip Committee is proud to present this year’s edition of the study trip, a moment where IE students explore a new city, learn about the sustainability environment of companies, politics and academia, and strengthen their community during 5 fun and exciting days!
Since France played a major role in the negotiation of the Paris Agreements, Paris is undoubtedly one of the sustainability innovation centres in the world. The country took the ambitious climate commitment of carbon neutrality by 2050 and as a consequence, developed a very active ecosystem of sustainability actors mainly located in the city.
Keep an eye on our official member channels to sign up and join us!
This Thursday, come to the Foobar🍻 and ask third years about their🫸Master Thesis Master Plan🫷
🕒 17:30, THU 21st of September
We are excited to share highlights from our recent reflection event hosted by IESA Shift!
🖼️We engaged in a deep reflection on the captivating Beyond Growth conference organised by the EU Parliament in Brussels, establishing meaningful connections to the realm of sustainability sciences. Joined by esteemed experts such as the director of the Industrial Ecology Programme, Stefano Cucurachi, and researchers Inge Schrijver and Rutger Hoekstra, we explored the concept of degrowth and its significance within our fields of study.
🌏Members of our self-organized degrowth learning group expertly moderated the discussion, allowing participants to share their valuable insights, challenges, and experiences from the conference. Together, we explored alternative pathways to sustainability, breaking away from traditional growth models, and contemplated on the vital role of the global south in these discussions.
🧠One crucial aspect that emerged from our conversation was the importance of taking action, particularly within the realm of Industrial Ecology. As a first step, we are working towards integrating the topic of post-growth into our educational program, paving the way for a more sustainable future, among organising more events on this topic and educating others about its implications for our field.
🤝We express our heartfelt gratitude to all participants and eagerly anticipate the continuation of this dialogue, as we collectively shape a future that prioritises sustainability, well-being, and harmony with our planet.

FUTURA LINE-UP 09.JUNE
Our line-up is a mix of newcomers and local professionals from all around the Netherlands (and the world, for that matter).
*MDREX 21:00-22:30*
MDrex is a DJ (and student) from Madrid who likes to toy around with Acid and Industrial techno, and who also has a thing for more experimental electro music. She will gently send us off into the night with slower, melodic beats and a little surprise track here and there. You have probably seen her behind the decks at BUTTERSLUTS, DISKOTEKA AVANTGARDE, or Biergarten.
mdrex_
*BRANDOM 22:30-00:00*
This dynamic Dutch duo has allegedly never been seen without their loyal fan base at the various events they’ve appeared at. Brandom describe themselves as argonauts who “traverse through trance in high tempo, unapologetically” and invite us to follow them along on their journey through the night.
*NACHO 00:00-01:30*
Doing his masters in sustainability, Nacho’s music reflects the rebellious undertones of a youth dissatisfied with the status quo. Inspired by 90s trance and underground electro, the spaniard’s sets want to counter the mainstream and include traces of punk and acid. His goal for the night is to “create a space for dance, joy, and respect” while reminding us of our radical love for life and community.
*SOPHOE 01:30-03:00*
The queen of the night honours us with a fast-paced closing set that will leave techno veterans jubilating. In here own words she will “squeeze out all your remaining energy” and “take you on a techno journey through high energy beats, ghetto vocals, and hyper breaks”. You might have seen her flaming red hair behind the decks at DISKOTEKA AVANTGARDE.
See you all next Friday!!
How can our society let go of its obsession with economic growth and focus more on wellbeing, inclusion and sustainability? 🌱
On Thursday, Dr. Christian Henderson spoke about the limitations of green growth as well as the principles of degrowth and Inge Schrijver gave an introduction to the WISE project, investigating the above-stated question.
💡 Some relevant insights:
- green growth is mainstream --> but absolute decoupling at a sufficient rate seems unachievable
- industrialized countries shift production to other countries and "offshore" their emissions
- degrowth is still not a clearly defined concept, constitutes a variety of principles
- degrowth is strongly connected to the problems of class
- focus on wellbeing needed (today, for all, for the future)
- it has to be agreed on an alternative to GDP
- an aggregated indicator is not very helpful --> we need dashboards
💡🌱 Ready to get your hands dirty and exploring sustainable alternatives in the real world? The IESA Shift Career Day 2023 will take place in two weeks on Wednesday the 24th of May. It will feature a diverse range of companies from various industries, each looking for industrial ecologists in the near future. There will be a career fair with stands for all participating companies, along with workshops covering a range of topics such as CV building. At the end of the day, there will be networking drinks.
-
⚠️The majority of companies have been confirmed, but if you happen to work at a company or know one that would still be interested in joining just send us an email to [email protected], as there are only a few more spots remaining!
-
✨️The event promises to be bigger and better than ever before, so mark your calendars and get ready for a day full of workshops, presentations, and networking opportunities that could lead to your dream job.
-
🌿 📈📉 Are you curious about the limits of green growth and what degrowth really means? Join us for a mini lecture featuring Christian Henderson, who will discuss the limitations of green growth and the concept of degrowth followed by Inge Schrijver, who will present the WISE project and indicators beyond GDP. Don't miss this opportunity to expand your knowledge on these important topics.
🕑 *11th of May 18:00-21:00*
📍 *Echo Arena, TU Delft*
Although the first 20 minutes will be used to inform the participants of the beyond growth conference in Brussels about the logisitics of the trip, EVERYONE is welcome to join!! See you there! 🌍
