FENIX

🌪️ The FENIX Tornado has landed in Shenzhen, China.

The Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning in China (MoCAUP) has organised an exhibition about the Chinese Architectural firm behind the design of the FENIX Tornado.

🏙️ What will you see?
The retrospective exhibition envelops two decades through 52 spinning projects, including the Harbin Opera House, Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, Hainan Science and Technology Museum and FENIX Museum.

In the FENIX collection: Berlin Wall 🧱

What can a graffitied 3.6-meter-high piece of wall remind us of? 🤷‍♀️

Between 1961 and 1989 Berlin stood divided in two worlds. The division was more than simply geographical. For 28 years, families, friends and loved ones were separated by a concrete wall of ideas and feelings.

🌬️ Wind of Change
After 28 years, the very ideas that divided Europe in half eventually crumbled. A wind of change motivated people to unify the laces that had separated them for long enough.

Broken Fragments ❤️‍🩹
The remaining fragments of the Berlin Wall that were not smashed down after the Fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), now stand broken, eroded and graffitied. These shattered pieces that used to keep people apart, now stand as a moving reminder of the past and a hopeful symbol of union for the future.

🎨 Stepping into the FENIX Collection 🏛️

Have you ever noticed the contrasting signs at the airport, distinguishing between 'Others' and 'EU'?

The artist Šejla Kamerić brings these signs beyond the airport to spark new perspectives.

🌍 Reflecting on Borders
Through her artwork, Šejla Kamerić sheds light on border restrictions and segregation.

When crossing a national border, the artist noticed that people are assigned into categories that either facilitate or complicate their entry based on their nationality. For instance, when you enter an EU country, you are categorised as a ‘European Citizen’ or ‘Others’. Ironically, some EU countries experience the same, ‘Other’, label when travelling abroad. Who exactly are these ‘Others’? 🤔

By setting the signs outside of their traditional border-crossing context, such as in FENIX, the artist asks us to reconsider our perception of the ‘Others’.

Commemorating 30 Years of the EU 🇪🇺
Today marks the anniversary of the formation of the EU (1.11.1993), and the work by Šejla Kamerić takes centre stage, prompting discussions about identity, borders and equality beyond any border.

For Open Monumenten Dag, FENIX will open its doors on September 9th & 10th, 2023

🌉 Picture this: a colossal 16,000 square metre warehouse, once the world's biggest has almost finished transforming into FENIX Museum, a place to share stories of migration through art, photography, architecture and historical objects.

🍒 The architectural cherry on top of the cake is a 24-metre tall steel staircase, the Tornado, designed by the Chinese architectural firm, MAD Architects.

🚢 Historical snapshot: Set on a peninsula in Rotterdam's port, FENIX watches over the same docks that kickstarted countless migrant journeys.

A new member in the skyline of Rotterdam is the staircase of FENIX, the Tornado designed by .

When walking up the Tornado, our future guests will be able to choose a different path to journey through FENIX. This will be a reflection of the many journeys a person ventures throughout life.

When MAD’s team designed the staircase of the FENIX, the Tornado, the idea was to let the visitor find its own direction. The Tornado is a metaphor about the unexpected routes that guide people’s life journeys.

‘Mirror Mirror on the Wall…’ 🪞

These shiny panels are wrapping up the internal structure of the FENIX staircase, the Tornado. This 25-metre-tall spinning steel addition to the skyline of Rotterdam will be the largest artwork in the museum. 🌪️

🌿 It is a different kind of reflection inspired by organic shapes:
In a couple of months, the Tornado will be finished. It will not reflect the perfect impression of reality. Its circular shape will mirror a version of the city that is more organic and united than what we perceive over the surface.

This was the intention of the Chinese architectonical firm behind its design, MAD Architects. 🧱

The twisted reflection is a reminder of the coexistent stories that live in the city.

From the same Rotterdam quays where the new FENIX Migration Museum is currently being built, hundreds of thousands of people left for Canada in the 20th century. They left Europe via Rotterdam, and for many, Pier 21 in Halifax was their arrival port.

In collaboration with the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, FENIX is looking for suitcases that travelled to Canada via the Netherlands for its growing museum collection. On Thursday, May, 25, the Director of FENIX will personally collect donated suitcases at Pier 21 in Halifax. These suitcases will then make the return journey to the Netherlands. They will become part of a large maze of suitcases that will be on permanent display after the museum opens in late 2024.

Canadian Museum of Immigration / Musée canadien de l'immigration FENIX

Rotterdam: een thuis voor landverhuizers. 🏡

In Rotterdam huisvesten zich meer dan 170 verschillende nationaliteiten. Als je door de stad fietst, ruik je misschien de geur van verschillende keukens. In de tram spot je verschillende kledingstijlen.

Rotterdam is al een hele lange tijd een eindbestemming voor alle verschillende landverhuizers.

🕰 Zelfs in de 17e eeuw was één-vierde van de Rotterdamse bevolking geboren buiten Nederland.

⌚️ Maar liefst 46% van de Rotterdammers heeft vandaag de dag een migratieachtergrond.

Er leven zoveel verschillende verhalen naast elkaar in één stad en FENIX brengt deze samen. Alle verhalen hebben namelijk één ding gemeen: ze vertellen het verhaal van hoe het is om te vertrekken en ergens anders een nieuw thuis te creëren.

Ons gebouw is het grootste kunstwerk van de collectie, maar waarom? 📐

🌍 FENIX was een plek waar mensen van over de hele wereld elkaar tegenkwamen. In 1920 was het de grootste op -en overslagloods in de grootste haven van de wereld, waar havenarbeiders uit heel veel verschillende culturen met elkaar samenwerkten.

🔨 Onze pilaren zijn niet gemaakt van broos marmer, maar van stevig beton. Om FENIX een moderne draai te geven, heeft de architect Ma Yansong onze Tornado ontworpen. De 28 meter hoge Tornado verbindt het verleden van het gebouw met de toekomst ervan.

🌪 Om deze redenen is FENIX niet alleen maar een bijzonder monument. Het is het grootste historische kunstwerk van onze hele collectie.

FENIX is een doolhof aan het bouwen, gemaakt van koffers. Heel. Veel. Koffers.

🧳 Waarom een doolhof?
Als bezoeker zul je (ver)dwalen door de verschillende gangen en paden in FENIX. Het doolhof laat je ervaren hoe het is om je koffers te pakken en te vertrekken naar ‘het grote onbekende’.

Het doolhof zal bestaan uit gedoneerde koffers van mensen die hun verhaal willen delen met ons en met de toekomstige bezoekers. Op deze manier wordt niet alleen hun koffer vereeuwigd in het doolhof, maar ook hun verhaal.

We hebben al méér dan 1.200 koffers ontvangen en die van jou past hier ook nog bij.

Als je jouw koffer wil doneren, kan je jouw verhaal met ons delen via [email protected]. Als kofferdonateur word je op de hoogte gehouden van de ontwikkelingen van het kofferdoolhof en zal je de eerste zijn die het doolhof in 2024 mag komen bewonderen.

Voordat je begint aan een reis stop je je hele ziel en zaligheid in één koffer. Wat zou jij inpakken? 🧳

Er zijn zoveel verschillende redenen om huis en haard achter te laten en die hebben allemaal invloed op wat je meeneemt. Vrijwillig of niet, de redenen om te vertrekken zijn zowel divers als persoonlijk.

Een dagboek, juridische documenten, foto’s van je geliefden of enkel de kleren aan je lijf: deze objecten vormen allemaal de link met je verleden.

FENIX bouwt naast een collectie van hedendaagse kunst en ook aan een collectie van fotografie en historische en persoonlijke objecten.

Wat staat ons te wachten de aankomende tijd?

Eind 2024 komt onze bestemming in zicht. Voor die tijd hebben we nog wat huiswerk te doen.

Dit staat op de planning:

🌪 De renovatie van FENIX en het bouwen van een meer dan 28 meter hoge Tornado in het hart ervan.
🖼 Het opbouwen van een collectie met moderne kunst, die het universele aspect van migratie benadrukt.
🧳 Het verzamelen van een collectie van historische objecten die de persoonlijke verhalen vertellen van landverhuizers.

Elke reis gaat gepaard met een transformatie, klein of groot. Wij staan aan de start van deze transformatie, en hopen jou tegen te komen tijdens onze reis. 🚢

Hoe werd een oude loods een culturele bestemming, de plek voor vertrek en aankomst?

FENIX ontwikkelt zich, net zoals de mensen in de omgeving:

🏗 Onze huidige locatie in Katendrecht opende in 1923 als de grootste op -en overslagloods van de wereld. Mensen van over de hele wereld vonden hier tijdelijke of vaste banen. Dit is waar het migratieverhaal begint.

🌍 Katendrecht transformeert in de 20e eeuw tot een van de eerste Chinatowns van Europa. Niet alleen Chinese oliestokers vonden hier werk, maar ook Oost-Europese landverhuizers, Griekse chocolade fabrikanten, Surinaamse jazzmuzikanten en Kaapverdiaanse zeemannen.

🧳 Meer dan 3 miljoen mensen zijn tot halverwege 20e eeuw vertrokken vanaf de Rotterdamse Wilhelminakade. Voordat de Tweede Wereldoorlog uitbrak, reisden ze af naar Amerika en Canada.

🌪 Al deze verhalen van vertrek en aankomst vormen FENIX. Eind 2024 zal zij haar deuren openen als culturele plek. De verhalen zijn tijdloos en universeel en verbinden zo het verleden met het heden.

🧱 Wat is de nieuwste toevoeging aan de skyline van Rotterdam?

Tip: het is gemaakt van roestvrijstaal en komt bovenop een 100 jaar oude loods van beton.

Onze Tornado geeft een draai aan FENIX. De om elkaar wervelende trappen in het hart van het museum brengen je 24 meter boven de grond. Eenmaal boven, aan de Maaszijde, kijk je uit over de skyline van Rotterdam.

Wanneer je via de Tornado naar boven klimt, kies je jouw eigen pad. Dit gebeeldhouwde kunstwerk staat symbool voor alle verschillende paden die je kan bewandelen tijdens een reis. 🌪
